The mission of the International Journal of Literature and Language Studies (IJLLS) is to provide readers with the development of language studies in linguistics and literature. In addition to manuscripts that center on the study, we welcome manuscripts on a wide range of topics relating to the technology used for language development, cultural impact on languages, computational linguistics, and philosophy of language. IJLLS publishes scholarly conceptual, theoretical, and empirical manuscripts on the study of language and focused on literature and linguistic analysis and development. Submissions to the journal should be readable and understandable by a wide audience. Manuscripts should therefore also focus on analysis or illustration of the issues covered, rather than merely providing a mathematical or technical coverage, which would be more suitable for a specialist journal. All manuscripts are submitted and reviewed electronically. We provide our published authors with both a quality publication and the widespread readership that comes from publishing all manuscripts online within a few weeks of acceptance. This approach ensures that published works are read and cited by the widest possible audience.

Abstract

This article examines semantic shifts in English and Uzbek medical terminology, focusing on how specialist meanings expand, narrow, or reframe across time and through translation. The study aims to compare mechanisms of change such as metaphorization, metonymy, eponymization, and internationalization, and to identify how these processes interact with borrowing and standardization in two structurally different languages. The methodology combines corpus informed qualitative analysis with a structured classification of shift types in a bilingual dataset of clinical and educational terms, complemented by dictionary triangulation and contextual verification in patient oriented and professional genres. Scientific novelty lies in a unified comparative typology that links shift direction to term formation patterns and to register pressures, showing where Uzbek calques stabilize meaning and where English polysemy drives divergence.

Abstract

This article examines the use and translation of deictic units in the German Qur’an translations of Rudi Paret, Bubenheim–Elyas, and Adel Theodor Khoury. Deixis plays an essential role in religious discourse because it connects linguistic expressions with speaker, addressee, time, place, and textual context. The study focuses on personal, spatial, temporal, and discourse deixis and compares how these elements are rendered in the selected German translations. Special attention is given to the ways in which translators preserve, adapt, or reinterpret deictic references in order to convey the intended meaning of the original text. The analysis shows that each translator applies different strategies depending on linguistic structure, theological interpretation, and target-reader orientation.

Abstract

This article examines the pragmatic potential of causative verbs of vertical movement (поднять, опустить, ko'tarmoq, tushirmoq, raise, lower, and their derivatives) in three typologically distinct languages: Russian (fusional), Uzbek (agglutinative), and English (analytic). Drawing upon conceptual metaphor theory and the classification of spatial metaphors developed for the Russian verbal lexicon, the study demonstrates how vertical verbs serve not only to describe physical displacement but also to express social, moral, and emotional evaluations, regulate interpersonal distance, and implement politeness strategies. The comparative material reveals that, despite the universality of the UP–DOWN spatial schema, specific lexical units and their pragmatic connotations depend on the grammatical structure and cultural priorities of each language. The article provides extensive examples from dictionary entries, corpus data, and natural speech contexts.

Abstract

This article presents a comparative functional-semantic analysis of borrowed and ambivalent hydraulic engineering terms in English, Uzbek, and Russian. The study examines three types of ambivalence — polysemy, homonymy, and synonymy — empirically illustrated through ten key terms. The findings reveal that ambivalent terms pose the highest risk of interference in translation, and their accurate interpretation requires contextual analysis and domain expertise. Patterns of phonetic adaptation and semantic shift in borrowed terms are identified, and their integration into national terminological systems is described. Drawing on the frameworks of Vinay and Darbelnet (1958), Nida (1964), and the terminological theory of Wüster (1979), linguistic strategies for minimizing interference are proposed. The results provide a foundation for standardizing hydraulic engineering terminology and compiling trilingual terminological dictionaries.

Abstract

This article examines the pragmatic translation strategies applied to the culture-bound Uzbek expression “xumo qushi” across its four occurrences in the first part of Odil Yoqubov’s historical novel “Ulug‘bek Xazinasi” and its English translation The Treasure of Ulugbek. In Uzbek literary and cultural tradition, the xumo bird is a mythical symbol of divine fortune, royal destiny, and sacred authority, yet it has no established equivalent in English. Drawing primarily on Mona Baker’s theory of pragmatic and contextual equivalence and Eugene Nida’s concept of dynamic equivalence, the article argues that the translator’s decision to render the symbol differently in each narrative context reflects a principled pragmatic strategy rather than lexical inconsistency. The analysis demonstrates that translation of culture-specific mythological imagery requires sensitivity to communicative function, narrative register, and reader reception rather than formal correspondence to the source expression.

Abstract

Specialized corpora — principled electronic collections of texts assembled to represent a specific genre, discipline, register, or writer population — have become a central methodological resource in academic writing research. This article reviews the applications of such corpora across the field, distinguishing them from large reference corpora and surveying the major purpose-built collections that have shaped the discipline, including the British Academic Written English (BAWE) corpus, the Michigan Corpus of Upper-level Student Papers (MICUSP), learner corpora, and small self-compiled (“do-it-yourself”) corpora. It then examines five interlocking domains of application: the description of formulaic language and lexical bundles; the analysis of stance, engagement, and metadiscourse; the identification of genre structure and rhetorical moves; the derivation of academic vocabulary and lexico-grammatical profiles; and the mapping of disciplinary and developmental variation. The article further considers pedagogical applications, in particular data-driven learning, and closes with a discussion of methodological limitations concerning representativeness, corpus design, and practitioner access. The evidence indicates that specialized corpora offer a uniquely fine-grained, context-sensitive window onto academic discourse that general reference corpora cannot provide.

Abstract

This paper offers a contrastive study of the semantic and pragmatic properties of the speech act of warning in French and Uzbek. The aim is to identify the illocutionary force of warnings, the interplay between threat and care, and face-saving strategies as encoded through modality, evidentiality, and conventionalized formulas. Methodologically, the analysis combines speech act theory, pragmatic inference, and discourse-based examination of situationally sampled oral and written interactions, grouped by risk type and participant roles. The novelty lies in modeling warning as a dual-purpose act that both prevents harm and distributes responsibility, while demonstrating that French tends to rely more on epistemic mitigation and indirectness, whereas Uzbek shows more systematic social indexing through respect, distance, and hierarchy-sensitive forms. The findings contribute to translation studies, intercultural pragmatics, and the design of pragmatically informed teaching resources for professional communication.

Abstract

Wie bekannt ist, sind die Werke des berühmten deutschen Schriftstellers JW Goethe, der den Meisterwerken der Weltliteratur einen beeutenden Beitrag geleistet hat, in zahlreiche Sprachen übersetzt worden. In der internationalen und der russischen Fachliteratur befassten sich folgende Forscher mit diesem Thema: F. Bodenstedt, H. Broms, K. Burdachs, J. H. Bürgel, K. Mommsen, W. M. Schirmunskij, I. S. Braginskij, A. M. Kogan, A. Kessel, O. Conrady, R. A. Deksoti sowie zahlreiche monographische Untersuchungen und Studien zur Analyse von Goethes «West- Östlicher Divan» durchgeführt. In der usbekischen Literaturwissenschaft gehören auch die Forschungen von G. Salomov, М. Sulazmonov, P. Usmon, R. Karimov, S.B. Zoqubov, А. Allaberganov, N. Komilov, С.С. Салимов, Ю. Егамова, К. Тожиев, С. Джабборов, К. Бобожонова и в диез Рейхе. Die Übersetzungen aus Goethes Schaffen durch die bekannten usbekischen Autoren M. Shayxzoda und SS Buxoriy nehmen aufgrund ihrer philosophischen Sinnfülle eine unvergleichliche Stellung in der usbekischen Literatur ein. Im vorliegenden Artikel werden die spezifischen Besonderheiten von SS Buxoriys Übersetzungen von Goethes «G'arbu Sharq» devoni erörtert.
