IBDA`: Jurnal Kajian Islam dan Budaya focuses on the study of Islamic culture that developed in society, as well as the culture that developed in Muslim societies. The scope of the study includes: a) Beliefs system in Islam, b) Ideas of Muslim scholars, c) Ritual system in Islam, d) Islamic institutions and organizations, e) Traditions or customs in Islamic society, and f) Literature and Islamic arts. IBDA`: Jurnal Kajian Islam dan Budaya aims to build a comprehensive understanding of Islamic norms in religious texts and their realization in social life. If the author comes from Indonesia, please submit articles in Indonesian. After the article has accepted to publish by the Ibda Journal Editorial Board, the writer of the article must be willing to follow the rules for translating the article into English with the translator specified by the Ibda Journal.

Abstract

Kiai as a social actor, who closely related to religion, has double entities, as a kiai himself and as a Muslim. The first concept is usually apllied in netral discussion on viewing a scholar and the activity of kiai for his followers, how he do preach (dakwah), methods, and other discussions that relate to the influenced power of kiai in his society. The second study is how kiai preaching, the way and methods and other studies like how is kiai power toward the society. The next study is about the kiai’s preach, methods and ways related to how the existence of kiai is build. The capital of kiai figure, finally can be seen as a consequence from good Muslim, and people in the society tend to acquire it.

Abstract

Islamic education is an education which combines and accelerates world and the life after death. The aim is not only creates an intelligent man but more than that. Islamic education is intended to build a perfect man to do the task from Allah SWT to be khalifah fil ardh. Remembering the task is not an easy job, Islam provides the best education for the people. The period of Islamic education development is divided into some periods that are related to historical development and Islamic civilization. It is changed on its methods and contents. This article compares the Islamic education in prophet’s era with Islamic boarding school nowadays.

Abstract

This paper reveals the Somalangu Islamic boarding school in Kebumen that has an important role for the people in southern coast of Java. Historically, the existence of the school becomes the starting point of Islam development there. In social transformation, the school fought against colonizer. Unfortunately the school was considered deviant when there was a conflict with the national army. Islamic force (AOI) that was led by KH Mshfudz Abdurrahman was accused to build an Islamic country and the misunderstanding made him killed. Meanwhile, KH Mahfudz Abdurrahman only wanted to fight against colonizer.

Abstract

The emergence of a number of religious sects which culminated in violence, especially in Indonesia sometimes dragging the name of the salaf pesantren, is actually a phenomenon that is motivated by a number of determinant factors, such as economic factors, politics and ideology. For the first and second factor has been widely discussed by experts/ researchers, while the ideological factor often forgotten by many people. Whereas the issue of ideologythat believed by each religious groups usually determine their direction and purpose. In fact, sometimes leads to an attitude/decision how to look to other groups. The streams of radical ideology has encourages the hostility with the others. This phenomenon of course reversed with the mainstream ideology of pesantren salaf, one of which is a Pesantren Edimancoro Salatiga. as the result of research revealed that the idiology of this pesantren salaf, always talking mutualrespect and love for fellow human beings, voice for justice, liberation and against any anarchism is an enemy of every religion.

Abstract

This paper discusses the Islamic boarding school respond toward environmental problem and the implementation of Islamic values in environmental awareness development in Al-Mansur Darunnajah 3 Kabupaten Serang, Banten Islamic boarding school. There are three efforts; first, there is an enthusiasm on doing the religious teaching; second, proactive on doing the cleaning; and third, the school concern on developing the eco-Islamic boarding school. There are three kinds of Islamic values implementation; first, intrinstic concern on practising Islamic values; second, creating slogans about prohibition on any kind of environmental damage and throwing rubish, and popularize the motto “bersih, indah, dan aman”. The third, there are special rules conducting the environmental problems by giving punishment and organize the schedule for cleaning.

Abstract

This article reveals the tradition in Salafi Islamic boarding school as a unindegineous Islamic istitution in Indonesia. This institution applies Wahabi school, do a purification movement, al-raj’u ila al-Qur’an wa al-Sunah, and exclusivity. The Salafi tradition is grouped into four concepts of thought: Syari’at, Bid’ah, Khurafat and Tahayul. It is intended to straighten the Muslim way of thinking in order to be good Muslims. Meanwhile the knowledge traditions are: in Fiqh, the books that are discussed are:al-Wajiz written by Syeikh abdul Adhim al-Badawi, Mulakhash fiqh by Syekh Fauzan, Sifat Shalat Nabi by Syeikh al-Bani, kitab Bulughul Maram. They all refuse everything that has no rules in Islamic law and opposite to the Islamic believe. The Salafi-Wahabi knowledge tradition that is always emphasize to the text authority and limits the idea’s role will cause the belief that al-Quran and hadis are perfect since they covers all life aspects of man. So, they made simplification that all religions that are not stated in al-Quran and hadis are believed as bid’ah. Meanwhile the doer is believed as a person who needs to be guidanced into the right way, by reminding or violence.

Abstract

This article reveals the Java pesantren tradition in Malaysia, especially ini the main areas where Javanese peole live, such as negeri Selangor, Perak and Johor. The discussion focuses on three kiai who come from Java and got education in Java pesantren and build pesantren in Semenanjung Tanah Melayu. They are a part of outstanding kiai who built pesantren in those three negeri. They represent the three negeri: Kyai Muhammad Ali Qaribun (from Bantul, Yogyakarta) in Selangor, Kyai Salleh(from Purworejo,Jawa Tengah) in Perak dan Dato‘ Kyai Shamsuddin Ridhwan (from Madiun Jawa Timur) in Johor. The result of the research shows that in the end of 19 century until the beginning of 20 there were many Javanese migrated to Semenanjung Melayu. They came from various places in Java and migrated there for some reasons; spreading religion, hate the colonialism, and the need of survive. The kiai continued the Java pesantren tradition in Semenanjung Melayu. They still have good relationship with their ancestral land in Java so they still send their santri to Java to continue the study.

Abstract

The differences between of religion and belief in a particular community is usually will show a conflict between followers of religions. It has become a fact of history that can not be ignored. whereas, if it is returned on the purpose of religion itself, of course, conflict, hostility, war is something contradictory. All of  true religion have aimed to creat the objectives of the human being. Such as, through the realization of harmony in social life. Religion suggests the importance of building a good attitude in the society besides spiritual rites. It was a union of  two aspects  relations between vertical and horizontal. Rural Prototype communities in the region which have three religions and places of worship side by side in Balun Village Turi subdistric Lamongan district. Balun one of the village have multicultur and plural in the society over the years never happened conflicts religious. Because of it, the researcher suppose to searh how is the social construction of the religious, in the harmony and how  is the process of establishing the values of harmony, religious rites and cultural activities that involve people of the different religions.            Phenomenological etnography  approach in this research through the data sources that are grouping refers to the  stratification. Social startifikasi in used in this research according to Pitrim A.Sorokin and Max Weber theories were the  strata of society devided into some group based on the standard such as; respectable, power and authority,  knowledge and income . then From this theory the  researcher devided the society  into four group. The first are the figures of Islamic religious, Christian, Hindu. Second the committee of mosgue, Church and Temple Board, third  local goverment staff, educators, teachers in all religius. The fourth  regular community; farmers , factory workers. Based on analyzed of phenomenological ethnography, the researchers found the result of the study, these are the social construction of the religious community,  harmony and the establishment of the values in the  harmony guided by the respectable each others in ideology, respectable to the hereditary tradition, expressing happiness had shown when other communities in religious rituals celebration, gave awards to other religious communities as well as a sense of togetherness reflected in any religious activities and social activities in Balun village. The Harmony  foundation  in the application as "sacrifices" of religion for the sake of harmony by the local wisdom communities.

Abstract

This article is aimed at analyzing the use of local symbols in Sufism literature in Nusantara. The objects of this study are Hamzah Fansuri’s poems and Haji Hasan Mustapa’s Sufism poems. Both writers were not only the biggest poets but also controversial in two different regions, Malay and Sunda. The analysis used in this study was semantic and intertextual approaches. This study found that there are five similarities between these two writers. First, both writers used poems as a spiritual expression of philosophical Sufism. Second, one of them used local symbolic image of Melayu coastal environment and the other used Pasundan mountainous nature. Third, both of them used poems as biographical expressions. Fourth, they both used quotations of verses or hadits in their poems. The fifth, they both criticized the breakage of Islamic law (syariah). This study shows that Hamzah and Mustapa tended to bephilosophical Sufism without ignoring syariah. For that reason, both the criticism of al-Raniri towards Hamzah and one of Sayyid ‘Utsman towards Mustapa are not really appropriate. The differenti ation between the creator and the creature in local symbols of Malay and Sunda clearly shows the continuous influence of neo-Sufism on Muslim intellectuals networkingalong Indonesian Archipelago since 6th century. This study is significant to show that indigenization of Sufism in Indonesian archipelago can be seen in the use of various Sufism symbols, which reflect the background of its nature and culture. This also shows that distinction of Nusantara Islam mysticism identity cannot be separated from great narration of Sufism tradition in the world. In addition, this study strengthens the importance of interconnection between Islam of different culture in two different regions, Malay and Sunda.

Abstract

This paper aims to find the themes of propagation of Islam Prophet Muhammad in the early spread of Islam that can be used uswah h}asanah by preachers in Indonesia in spreading Islam in accordance with the present context. Letters were used as the data in this study are the letters sent by the Prophet Muhammad to the king superpower in the Roman and Persian kings and their little under the authority of the king of the superpower. The letters are including in these types of letter are ten letters. Stanton thematic theory which states that the theme (theme) is contained in the meaning of a story, become the basic theory in this study. In addition, there is also a theme in the study of the distribution of known theme with theme of major and minor themes. In analyzing the data, before entering the core analysis, the author uses the method of analysis and match with sub-method translational match. In this case, the letters of the Prophet Muhammad first translated into Indonesian, after it analyzed according issues to be answered. The findings of this thematic analysis form the major theme of “propagation of Islam” whose content is tailored to the circumstances of the king recipients. Of the major themes, there are minor themes are used to support the universality of the major themes of these letters, they are: dakwah must be by the name of God, pray forsalvation only to Muslims, Jesus is not the son of God, all the religions of Semitic is unity of God (tawhid), religion God recognized only Islam, and Islam is tolerant religion. Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk mencari tema-tema dakwah Islam Nabi Muhammad pada awal penyebaran Islam yang dapat dijadikan uswah h}asanah oleh para da’i di Indonesia dalam menyebarkan agama Islam yang sesuai dengan konteks kekinian. Surat yang dijadikan data pada penelitian ini adalah surat-surat yang dikirim oleh Nabi Muhammad kepada para raja adidaya di Romawi dan Persi beserta raja-raja kecil yang berada di bawah kekuasaan kedua raja adidaya tersebut. Yang temasuk dalam jenis surat ini sejumlah sepuluh pucuk surat. Teori tematik Stanton dan Kenny yang menyatakan bahwa tema (theme) adalah makna yang dikandung sebuah cerita, menjadi landasan teori dalam penelitian ini. Selain itu, terdapat pula pembagian tema yang dalam kajian tema dikenal dengan tema mayor dan tema minor. Dalam menganalisis data, sebelum masuk pada analisis inti, penulis menggunakan metode analisis padan dengan submetode padan translasional. Dalam hal ini, surat-surat Nabi Muhammad tersebut diterjemahkan terlebih dahulu ke dalam bahasa Indonesia, setelah itu dianalisis sesuai permasalahan yang ingin dijawab. Temuan dari analisis tematik ini berupa tema mayor tentang “dakwah Islam” yang isinya disesuaikan dengan keadaan para raja penerima surat. Dari tema mayor tersebut, terdapat tema-tema minor yang digunakan untuk mendukung keuniversalan tema mayor surat-surat tersebut, yaitu berdakwah harus karena Allah, mendoakan keselamatan hanya untuk muslim, Nabi Isa bukananak Tuhan, seluruh ajaran agama semitik adalah pengesaan Allah, agama yang diakui Allah hanya Islam, dan Islam agama yang toleran.
