Abstract

In the early twentieth century, Indonesia witnessed the flourishing of madrasa as a new model for Muslim educational institutions to respond to public schools established by the Dutch colonial era. Abdul Wahid Hasyim was one of the prominent Muslim intellectuals who introduced some approaches in madrasa learning process in which different from the traditional learning system in the pesantren. The purpose of this paper is to elaborate on Abdul Wahid Hasyim’s thoughts on freedom of learning in madrasa using a historical approach to understand the historical context of Hasyim’s ideas. As a result, this paper argues that Wahid Hasyim offered a mixed curriculum in madrasa by combining Islamic and secular subjects that are considered useful for students in the future. Another finding is that Wahid Hasyim preferred the tutorial method in the learning process, which replaced teacher-centered learning, as is common in pesantrens. To some extent, this method of learning is similar to student-centered learning in contemporary pedagogy.

Abstract

This research examines the history of the batik industry and its impact on the development of Islamic education in Gemeksekti Village, Kebumen District, Kebumen Regency. The method used in this research is the historical method; namely heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Historically, the batik industry in Gemeksekti Village has existed and been known since the 19th century as mentioned in the book Batikrapport written by P. De Kat Anggelino in 1930. In the 1960s the batik industry in Gemekseti experienced quite rapid development after receiving support from the Indonesian Batik Cooperative Association (GKBI). This progress also had an impact on the economic welfare of the Gemeksekti Village community. The increasingly improving economic conditions of the Gemekseti community have encouraged several figures and Gemekseti batik entrepreneurs to agree to establish a Compulsory Madrasah Learning (MWB) educational institution and batik entrepreneurs who act as donors. In 1969, due to encouragement from Gemekseti entrepreneurs and the Government on the other hand, this MWB was transformed into the Model State Intidaiyah Madrasah (MIN) in Gemeksekti Village.

Abstract

This article is a critical study of “Le carrefour Javanais: essai d'historia globale.” by Dennys Lombard; as one of the most unique Historigraphy works compared to the works of other orientalist historians. The new approaches offered by Denys Lombard, such as the use of reverse periodization and the “cultural geology” approach, have made a valuable contribution to the development of Indonesian Historigraphy in particular. But on the other side, Denys Lombard's writing method which tends to ignore the historical periodization framework, which should be the main characteristic of history, actually makes him ignore the small changes that occurred in the past.

Abstract

The dynamics of Cultural Islam and Political Islam still occur and are actual in people's lives today. Several Political Islam groups with their voices through Islamic parties want to make Islam the basis of ideology and Indonesia a religious state. Meanwhile, the Cultural Islam group with a missionary spirit that wants to establish Islam as life values that blend with culture and also anti-sectarianism rejects the idea of Political Islam. Cultural Islam holds the view that the implementation of Islamic teachings in the state does not have to be in the form of formal Islamic principles, but rather at the level of Islamic meaning and behavior in Muslim society. Cultural Islam is the middle point of the debate between political Islam and secular nationalists. This research, when viewed from the perspective of the data source, can be categorized as a literature review. If viewed from an analytical perspective, this research is considered qualitative research. Meanwhile, if we look at the purpose of conducting it, this research can be categorized as analytical descriptive research. This research aims to find out the extent of cultural Islamic discourse and political Islam in the history of Indonesian Islam.
