Abstract

Purpose- This study aims to explore the paradigm shifts in environmental awareness and disaster theology among Muslim communities on the North Coast of Java, particularly focusing on generational differences between Gen X and Gen Z in responding to ecological crises such as floods. Design/methods/approach- This research employs a qualitative method using surveys and in-depth interviews, supported by literature review. The phenomenological approach is used to examine individual experiences and meanings related to disasters. The analysis framework is based on Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann’s theory of the social construction of reality. Findings- The findings reveal that Gen Z tends to perceive disasters through the lens of environmental degradation and socio-political factors, influenced by digital media exposure and global ecological discourse. In contrast, Gen X adheres more to classical theological interpretations, viewing disasters as divine tests or punishments. However, both generations demonstrate ethical responses that are not solely rooted in theological understanding, but also shaped by evolving social values and knowledge. The typology of ethical-theological attitudes includes fatalism/vitalism in both passive and active forms. Research Implications- This research highlights the dynamic interaction between theology, ecology, and social construction in shaping environmental awareness. It underscores the need for strategic environmental education that integrates religious narratives to foster sustainable behavior, especially in disaster-prone communities with strong religious identities.

Abstract

Purpose- This study aims to examine the role of the Nahdlatul Ulama Regional Board (PCNU) of Indramayu in promoting interfaith tolerance and maintaining religious harmony following the issuance of a fatwa by the Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI), which labeled the beliefs of the Segandu Hindu-Buddhist Dayak community as deviant. Design/methods/approach- Using a qualitative research design, the study collects data through interviews, observation, and documentation. The data are then analyzed thematically to uncover patterns in the response and engagement of PCNU Indramayu. Findings- The findings reveal that PCNU Indramayu acts as a mediator to reduce social tensions by advocating the values of ukhuwah (brotherhood) and wasathiyyah (moderation). Through public education and community engagement, the organization fosters tolerance and encourages mutual respect among religious groups, mitigating the risk of discrimination and conflict. Research Implications- This research highlights the importance of civil Islamic organizations in conflict resolution and religious peacebuilding. It offers a model for how local religious actors can counteract intolerance and support pluralism in a religiously diverse society.

Abstract

Abstract: Purpose- This study aims to reinterpret Ali ‘Abd al-Raziq’s thoughts on the separation of religion and politics within the framework of Indonesian democracy, offering fresh perspectives on the relationship between religion and the state in a pluralistic society. Design/methods/approach- The research adopts a library research method using a descriptive qualitative approach, analyzing primary texts by al-Raziq alongside relevant literature on Indonesian democratic principles and political theology. Findings- The study finds that al-Raziq’s arguments—particularly his rejection of the caliphate as a religious obligation and his emphasis on politics as a human construct—resonate with Indonesia’s foundational philosophy of Pancasila. His thought affirms the necessity of a state independent from religious authority while upholding the moral value of religion in social life. Research Implications- This reinterpretation highlights the continuing relevance of al-Raziq’s secular political theology in contemporary Muslim-majority democracies. It provides conceptual support for democratic systems that separate state governance from religious institutions while maintaining space for ethical-religious influence in public discourse.

Abstract

Abstract: Purpose- This study explores the tradition of Salat Hadiyah and Tahlilan in Gunungmanik Village, aiming to examine its religious significance and social function within the local Muslim community. Design/methods/approach- The research adopts a qualitative descriptive approach, utilizing field observations, interviews with religious and community leaders, and a review of theological sources to understand both practice and perception. Findings- The findings reveal that these rituals serve not only as spiritual offerings for the deceased but also as a means of strengthening communal ties and preserving intergenerational religious values. Despite ongoing theological debates regarding the transfer of worship rewards to the deceased, the community largely upholds the practice, supported by interpretations from salaf and khalaf scholars. Religious and local leaders play a key role in sustaining and promoting this tradition. Research Implications- This study emphasizes the need to strengthen public understanding of Islamic teachings in harmony with local culture. Preserving practices like Salat Hadiyah and Tahlilan as part of religious and cultural heritage is vital to ensuring their relevance and acceptance in contemporary Muslim society.

Abstract

Abstract: Purpose- This study aims to explore the role of Qur'anic verses in the Ritual of Tolak Bala at Pondok Pesantren Tahfizul Quran Miftahul Falah Cirebon, focusing on how these verses are practiced and understood within the ritual. Design/methods/approach- The research employs a qualitative methodology with a descriptive approach. Primary data were collected through interviews with pesantren caregivers, teachers, students, and local community members, while secondary sources were obtained from journal articles, books, classical Islamic texts (kitab kuning), and documentation. Findings- The findings indicate that specific Qur'anic verses—particularly Ayat Kursi and selected chapters—hold a central spiritual function in the implementation of the Tolak Bala ritual. This ritual serves as a means of invoking divine protection and reflects both a functional interpretation of the Qur'an and the continuity of the living Qur'an tradition within the pesantren environment. Research Implications- This study highlights the enduring relevance of local religious practices rooted in Qur'anic spirituality. It emphasizes the importance of contextualizing Islamic traditions within communal rituals, ensuring that such practices continue to thrive as expressions of faith and cultural identity in contemporary pesantren life.

Abstract

Purpose- This study aims to explore how Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in Indonesia respond to the challenges of modernization, focusing on the balance between preserving traditional values and embracing educational innovation. Design/methods/approach- The research uses a qualitative descriptive approach by examining the philosophical foundation of al-muhafazhah ‘ala al-qadīm as-sālih wa al-akhdz bi al-jadīd al-aslah as a guiding principle for adaptation. Analysis centers on the role of the kiai as a key actor in decision-making and institutional resilience. Findings- The study finds that pesantren have demonstrated remarkable adaptability by integrating modern educational practices while preserving their religious and cultural heritage. The kiai plays a pivotal role in interpreting change, facilitating innovation selectively, and managing tensions between traditionalism and reform. This dynamic allows pesantren to remain relevant without losing their identity. Research Implications- The findings underscore the importance of maintaining a contextual and value-based approach in Islamic education reform. Understanding how pesantren synthesize conservatism with progressivism offers a model for educational institutions facing similar dilemmas in plural and rapidly evolving societies.

Abstract

Purpose-This study aims to explore the symbolic meanings of Qur'anic verses in Tari Topeng tradition that has developed in Slangit Village, Cirebon. In this village, Tari Topeng is not merely a performance of art, but also a medium for conveying profound spiritual messages, heavily influenced by Islamic teachings. Design/methods/approach- Using a qualitative approach, this research identifies various symbols and meanings embedded in each stage of the procession, as well as the mask characters used during the performance. Findings- The study reveals how the Tari Topeng dancers in Slangit Village interpret Qur'anic verses within their artistic tradition. Prior to the performance, the recitation of Qur'anic verses is performed through four main stages: first, Dalang (puppet master) undergoes a spiritual cleansing ritual; second, the dalang recites prayers, wirid, and Qur'anic surahs for the safety of the performance; third, the dalang conducts a duduk manji to seek permission from the ancestors; and fourth, the masks are maintained every Friday night with prayers and salawat. Additionally, the mask characters used in the performance carry meanings that reflect the content of the Qur'anic verses. Research Implications- This research highlights that traditional arts, such as Tari Topeng, possess a strong religious dimension that shapes both the cultural and spiritual identity of Desa Slangit community.
