Abstract

This study was investigated the realization of ideational grammatical metaphors in editorials of The Jakarta Post Newspaper. The objectives of this study were to identify the types of ideational grammatical metaphor are found in editorials texts of, to describe how the ideational grammatical metaphor lingustically realized in the editorials text, and to explain the reasons for the used of ideational grammatical metaphors. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research. The sourceof data were editorials of The Jakarta Post newspaper, published on http://www.thejakartapost.com/chanel/editorial, which containing of six editorials written in January 2015 episode. The data were the texts containing of ideational grammatical metaphors. The data were analyzed based on  the Sistemic Functional Language approach. The result showed that there were four types of ideational grammatical metaphor, namely adjective =>noun, verb =>noun, verb =>adjective, adverb =>adjective. The dominant type of ideational grammatical  metaphor in the editorials is verb =>adjective. The reasons of ideational grammatical metaphor used in the editorials was due to nominalization and condensation. Grammatical metaphor as a model of language was needed to help people to understand how a text work to make meaning and all meaning was situated in context of situation and context of culture. There was a great deal of variation among different register in the degree and types of metaphor that was encountered. Abstract

The objectives of the study was To find out to what extent does the design of story book in English match the preschoolers’ language development, to find out how story book in English designed to cope with the Pre-schoolers, to find out the reason why  story book in English designed as it was for pre-Schoolers. The study was research and development. The existing story book was Moo’s Smelly Jumper from David Brown. There were several uncommon words, and the book was not intended in indicators K-13 Curricullum.  The researcher wanted to develop a new story book in English for Preschoolers in Medan based on the position of EFL in Indonesia and the preschoolers’ language development in English. The story book was about my pets and me. The researcher develop 6 of pets, cat, rabbit, fish, bird, dog, and rooster. The researcher create the uncommon words to be common word to the preschoolers by presenting the explanation of picture of the object, and the function of the object. the story book was intended to the indicator in K-13 Curricullum. The findings of the study showed that (1)  The findings of the existing story book the total score in general were ”2” (the criteria was partially met). And then, preschoolers’ language development, namely 80% matched with Slobin’s theory in Semantic, 76% in Grammatic and 72% preschoolers in Phonology. (2). Based on the validation of the book by the experts, the book got some the revision in the content and in the layout. Finally the book would be : The content : Included the learning outcome, the text was intended to achieve the indicator of K-13 curricullum, namely preschoolers are able to love the pets such as rabbit, cat, dog, birds, and roooster. The layout : the size of page number was not too big, the background was colorfull to attrack The preschoolers’ attention. The series book of “Gunggung is my Dog, Brave Rooster, Miaw the Cheerfull cat, Bird’s sad whistle, and Missing Fish  ” had been design to achieved the standard competence which was written in syllabus kemendikbud no 37, “the preschoolers can love the God’s living things” where the theme was “Pets” in the first semester.  Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the book was appropriate for Preschoolers in Medan. some suggestion were directed to To teacher of Preschool in Medan supposed giving more attention to the preschoolers’ language development in Medan in doing story telling by using a story book in English, to other researcher, it was suggested that this reseach could be further expanded, elaborated, and explored in other field in ordet to contribute the development, especially in story book, and to all the readers, it was suggested to use this research as the reference for other research in educational research and Development.Keywords : develop, story book, PreSchoolers,

Abstract

The Objectives of this paper are to describe the realization of language styles used by male and female teacher and the reasons of the using those language styles. The subjects were the teachers of SMP Negeri Pancur batu, they were four English teachers, consits of two male teachers and two female teachers. It was qualitative explanative research designs. The researcher observed the teachers while teaching in order to get the teachers language styles taking place during their teaching in the classroom related to the theory of Tannen, who divides the way of communication into six categories; pairs a contrasting use of language by males and females, they are: status versus support, independence versus intimacy, advice versus understanding, information versus feeling, orders versus proposal and conflict versus compromise. .The results of the data analysis showed that the. The language styles of the male and female teacher were different in the way of communication. The realization of language styles by the teachers’ way of speaking  mostly occur in male teachers’ is orders which is 13 utterances (38.2%), then followed by advice which is 11 utterances (32.4%), then continued by information 6 utterences (20,6%) and then conflict 2 utterances (5,9%) and the last is status 1 utterances (2.9%). Female teachers’ way in communication was mostly realized by orders  which is 10 utterances (29.4%), then followed by feeling which is 8 utterances (23.5%), and then continued by understanding which is 7 utternces (20.6%), and then support which is 5 utterances (14.7%), and the last is proposal which is 4 utterances (11.8%). Besides, it can be seen that eventhough Tannen (1992) suggested the orders were categorized for male way’s of speaking , but based on this study, orders were found in the female teachers’ way of speaking. There were 29.4% the utterances realized by orders although that criteria is not classified to female. In fact, those way of speaking were the most used in the female teachers. According to the male and female teachers all the ways of communication are expressed to encourage the students to reach the lesson competencies well.Keywords:English Teachers, Language Styles, Way of communication,

Abstract

English conversation is an important lesson for Senior High School students in order to face the globalization effects. Many students considered English conversation as a controversial lesson through their positive and negative attitudes toward it. This study aimed to reason for the Senior High School students realize their attitudes toward English conversation class in the ways they are. This qualitative study was conducted at the twelfth grade of Senior High School students. The subjects of this study were 20 students consisting of 11 females and 9 males at the age of 16-18 years old. The data were collected by observations and interviews then were analyzed using Interactive Models. The result showed that there were four reasons of the students realized their attitudes i.e. the (1) language pride, (2) awareness of language norms, and the new findings were (3) motivation to get the job, and (4) lack of skill. It was concluded that the students’ attitudes varied as to positive and negative ones and realized in numerous manners affected by several factors.Keywords: language, attitudes, conversations

Abstract

The objective of this study was to elaborate how is the realization of translation techniques in a micro-unit of Ali Baba Burlesque subtitle. The research methodology used in the research is qualitative design. The data were micro-units (words, clauses, phrases and sentences).The data were collected through documentary technique. The data were analyzed by using interactive model namely data condensation, data display and drawing conclusion.The findings of this study revealed that the realization of translation techniques in the English Subtitle of Ali Baba Burlesque consist of 2 groups consists of double techniques and triple techniques. For the double techniques namely Modulation and Reduction (0.2%), Modulation and Borrowing (4.3%), Literal and Borrowing (1.1%), Reduction and Borrowing (1.2%), Amplification and Borrowing (0.1%), Amplification and Generalization (0.1%) ,Establish Equivalence and Borrowing (0.1%). And triple techniques namely Amplification, Reduction and Modulation (0.1%).  The conclusion: multiple techniques in Ali Baba Burlesque consist of triple techniques and double techniques. Double techniques that found in the micro-unit, mainly focused on Modulation but also associated with Borrowing. Meanwhile for triple techniques, it also focused on modulation but different from double technique, it associated with other techniques namely Amplification, and Reduction.Keywords:Translation,double, triple, multi techniques.,

Abstract

The aims of this study was to investigate the strategies of Angkolanese maintain Bahasa Angkola at Langgar Community in Kota Medan. The research was conducted by using qualitative design. The data of this study were the utterances of Angkolanese speakers. There were 20 participants of this research. The data were collected through observation, questionnaire and interview. The result of this study revealed that: There were three factors that affecting language maintenance proposed by Fishman (1991) in this study namely family language policy, Using Angkola language in their daily communication frequently, and using Angkola language in cultural activity like in wedding ceremony. The using of these strategies can be applied to the first and second generation. Meanwhile the third generation found the difficulties when facing the strategies. They tend to use bahasa Indonesia in their daily life because most of their time are spending at school and they are not aware of the cultural activity around them.Key words: Strategies of Language Maintenance, Bahasa Angkola, Langgar Community.

Abstract

This Study investigates modality used by Donald Trump in his   speech  in  United Nations General Assembly 2017. Modality is expressed as the speakers’s judgment of the Obligation, or probabilities involved what is saying. The speech was conveyed by Donal Trump as the  representative of America in United Nations General Assembly 2017. Three objectives of the study are the describtion of  kinds of the modality used on  Donald Trump’s speech in United Nations General Assembly, the analyze of realization of modality and the describtion of the reasons of modality.the data were obtained from Donal Trump’s speech . The speech transcription was analyzed by applying Systemic Functional Linguistics Theory. The Occurences of modality were qualitatively analyzed by converting them into persentages to determine the proportions namely (i) explicitly subjective, (ii) imlicity subjective, (iii) explicitly objective and (iv) imlicity objective. The findings indicates that imlicity subjective (68.75 %) , ) explicitly subjective (17.19%), imlicity objective (7.81%) and explicitly objective (6.25%). It means that the speech is also conveyed methaphorically or congruently by grammatical variation which occurs is based on the logical semantic relationship projection and exert the pragmatic function to connct the listener perception toward the speaker judgmentKeywords: modality, explicitly subjective, imlicity subjective, explicitly objective, imlicity objective

Abstract

This study investigated ideational grammatical metphor in Senior High School English Textbook. The objectives of the study were to identify what ideational grammatical metaphors were used in Senior High School English Textbooks. The research was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative design. The data for this study were texts which were taken from Texts in Senior High School English Textbooks. The data were collected by selecting all the texts in the textbooks, then retyping the passage of the texts, editing the passage by breaking down the clauses into a data, and finally printing out the data. After the data had been collected, they were analyzed by some procedures; identifying the ideational grammatical metaphor in the data, rewording or unpacking the data into a congruent form, making comparisons between the two forms, classifying the classes of ideational grammatical metaphor and its function and analyzing the reason the ideational grammatical metaphor was used in Senior High School English Textbooks. The findings of the study showed that there were four ideational grammatical metaphor used in Senior High School English Textbook, namely the data of epithet = thing, event = thing, event = epithet and head = modifier.Keywords: Ideational Grammatical Metaphor, Senior High School English Textbooks,

Abstract

This research aims to describe the ability of active/expresive language and passive/ reseptive language of an autistic student and the effort to improve the language itself helped by the teacher and the shadow teacher in a non-govermental school in Medan. This research uses qualitative descriptive with study case of an autistic student in primary second grader , his initial is FR. Technique of data collection are observation, interview, and documentation. Technique of data analysis are data condensation, data display and verification and conclusion. The result of research showed that the ability of active/expressive language of FR still had difficulties in pronouncing, unclear articulation for certain letter such as r, n, ny, l, talk simple, unable to have interaction and communication properly, unable to convey the information, requesting what he needed use incomplete sentence when he got depresion, he needed help in writing. And the ability of passive/ receptive FR still have difficulties to comprehend the sentence he heard, able to understand simple sentence only based on his daily experience, able to answer simple sentence when the question asked is same with the statement, respond the long questions by replying the last sentence only, unable to comprehend the reading. Keyword: Active/expressive, passive/receptive, autistic
