Abstract

Urban social spaces have become an important arena for shaping the identity of modern society. This study aims to examine the role of Kafe Numericca 29 in shaping the social identity of urban communities in Makassar City, emphasizing that modern cafes serve not only as places of consumption but also as dynamic social and cultural spaces. This study uses a qualitative case study approach, with data collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with seven informants aged 21–50 years, and documentation of cafe activities and social media. The results show that Numericca 29 Cafe has four main roles in the construction of urban community social identity. First, as a symbol of status and lifestyle, this cafe serves as a medium for expressing modernity and social prestige through visitors' behavior, appearance, and digital representation. Second, as a space for social interaction, Numericca 29 helps strengthen inclusiveness, emotional attachment, and collective solidarity through various community and cultural activities. Third, in the context of institutional identity management strategies, the management consciously creates a comfortable, open, and friendly atmosphere, both in physical spaces and through digital media. Fourth, as a third place, this cafe becomes a social space that balances the demands of modernity and human needs for togetherness and a sense of belonging. Overall, Numericca 29 Café has transformed into an urban social institution that harmonizes modern lifestyles, cultural expressions, and social cohesion. These findings show that public spaces such as cafés play an important role in shaping social identity, strengthening community relations, and reflecting the cultural dynamics of today's urban Makassar society.

Abstract

The short film Basri and Salma In A Never Ending Comedy is a drama-comedy set in the Bugis-Makassar community. The Bugis-Makassar community adopts a strong patriarchal value that places men as the dominant party in determining the position of women. This film provides an insight into the limitations faced by women in making decisions about whether or not to have children. The film Basri and Salma In A Never Ending Comedy is very interesting because it conveys a message about the power of female sexuality, demonstrating autonomy and control over one's body. This research is a qualitative study that involves the development of concepts based on existing data. The discussion uses a feminist semiotic analysis approach to describe data in the form of signs based on screenshots of scenes from the film Basri and Salma In a Never Ending Comedy, leading to a conclusion. The research findings conclude that the scenes in the film Basri and Salma In A Never Ending Comedy, first, depict the subordinate position of women within the family, as seen in the dinner scene.  Secondly, it demonstrates the concept of power referred to as the power of sexuality, which grants women the authority to determine their bodily autonomy.

Abstract

Modernization is a multidimensional phenomenon that brings rapid and complex social, cultural, and structural changes to modern society. This process not only brings progress in technology and industrialization, but also raises various social challenges such as urbanization, shifting values, changes in family structure, weakening social solidarity, and transformations in religious and cultural relations. Therefore, understanding modern society requires a comprehensive and multidisciplinary scientific approach. This study aims to analyze the role of sociology and anthropology in understanding the dynamics of modern society and their contributions in responding to the challenges of modernity. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with a literature study approach, utilizing secondary data sourced from relevant books and scientific journal articles. The results of the study show that sociology plays an important role in analyzing changes in social structure, social movements, contemporary issues, and the impact of technology and social media on social relations. Meanwhile, anthropology provides a deep understanding of cultural identity, multiculturalism, acculturation, symbols and meanings of popular culture, as well as the application of applied anthropology in modern society. The collaboration between sociology and anthropology allows for a more complete understanding of socio-cultural realities, especially in the context of Muslim communities in Indonesia. Thus, the integration of these two disciplines becomes a strategic analytical framework in formulating inclusive social policies, maintaining cultural diversity, and building social harmony amid the ever-evolving tide of modernization.

Abstract

One of the areas located on the outskirts of a major city and experiencing the impacts of rapid housing development is Subdistrict Tamangapa, District Manggala, Makassar City. The total area of Tamangapa Subdistrict is 6,062 hectares, of which 4,499 hectares are agricultural land. Lands that were once used for agriculture or left as open fields have now been converted into modern residential complexes. This transformation has brought various consequences for the local community, particularly in economic and social aspects. The research method employed in this study is qualitative, utilizing observation, interviews, and documentation techniques for data collection. The findings indicate that housing development has led to significant changes in the economic and social life of the community. From an economic perspective, housing development has created new employment opportunities, such as in construction and services, which have been positively utilized by the local residents. A shift in livelihood from the agrarian sector to the informal or service sector has become an inevitable reality that the community must adapt to. From a social perspective, housing development has created a social divide between newcomers and indigenous residents, both in terms of social interactions and access to social facilities. This can be observed in the modern lifestyle brought by the new residents, which at times does not align with the traditional values upheld by the local community.
