Abstract

In recent years, there are a lot of popular Asian films or dramas that got Indonesian remake. It leads to cultural shifts between the original one and the remake version which receives a good reaction from the viewers. Among the Indonesian remake films, the researchers found a significant cultural shift in Sweet 20, 2017 Indonesian film which is produced based on a popular South Korean film, Miss Granny. The aim of this research is to reveal the cultural differences contained in the films Sweet 20 and Miss Granny. This research employs analysis descriptive analytical analysis as the technique to analyze the data and use the theory of transcultural adaptation by Linda Hutcheon (2006), Koentjaraningrat’s theory which concerns seven elements of cultures and supported by Bronislaw Malinowski. This research uses descriptive qualitative method because it is related to the data which are text and visual taken from the dialogues and visualizations in Miss Granny and Sweet 20 films. Meanwhile, the researchers apply three techniques for data collection: observation (watching the films), documentation (documenting the dialogues), and recording (screenshotting the scenes). After examining it, the researchers found five elements as cultural shifts between Miss Granny and Sweet 20; namely religious system, social norms, art, living equipment, and language.

The data are taken from instantmiso’s (pen name) web comics entitled Siren’s Lament season 1 and season 2 in English and Indonesian version which can be found on Webtoon. Observation and documentation are techniques of collecting data used in this research. For technique of analyzing data, the researcher used the theory of Spradley (1979), involving domain, taxonomy, componential table, and finding cultural themes. Among 99 data found in the analysis, some categories are obtained. Those categories of sound effect were; Impact (26 data (26.3%)), Friction (11 data (11.1%)), Air Current (23 data (23.2%)), Sound involving Liquid and Food (17 data (17.2%)), Breakage (3 data (3.0%)), Explosion and Gunshot (1 data (1.0%)), Sound with Long Duration (13 data (13.1%)), and Pitch (5 data (5.1%)). The dominant data of sound effect category is Impact with 26 data. In terms of strategies, the results showed that    70 data applied repetition strategy, 2 data applied translation strategy, 80 data applied Substitution strategy, and 1 data applied Deletion strategy. Substitution becomes dominant strategy and shows that the translator does not change the overall meaning, but only translates the sound effect into a typical sound in Indonesia.

Abstract

The adaptation of literary works to film is not new in this era. After undergoing several transformations from poetry to musicals, comics, graphic-novels, and novels, Hujan Bulan Juni as a literary work was then adapted into the film art with the same title. This research focuses on the film Hujan Bulan Juni (2017) directed by Reni Nurcahyo Hestu Saputra which was adapted from the text of the novel and poem Hujan Bulan Juni written by Sapardi Djoko Damono. Although there have been changes from literary works to films, film directors certainly want to maintain fidelity in the works even though this is not possible, because both have different mediums and have gone through different interpretation processes. In the end, it becomes understandable if there are so many elements that are removed or even added in a film adaptation. However, there are elements that actually change the point of view of the story and obscure the aesthetics of the film so that it is disturbing, namely the interior monologue and intertitle. The use of these two elements affects the essence of cinema which is projected through audio and visual, in which the film has a medium specification in the form of moving images. In this study, the researcher tries to describe what elements are removed or added by the director from the novel to the film and how they affect the adaptation work. To find out the characteristics of each of these mediums, it is necessary to conduct a comparative study. One way to find out the comparison, in this study using an intertextuality approach with microcosmic and macrocosmic methods. The result shows that the film adaptation does not maintain the fidelity. Interior monologue that appears a lot in the novel is mostly removed and the intertitle is excessively added.

Abstract

The Hours is a Psychology movie directed by Michael Cunningham and broadcast for the first time in 2002. This movie is about three women whose lives are mutually connected with the story in the novel Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf. Clarissa Vaughan, a lesbian, decided to take care of Richard, a man and her best friend who suffered from HIV AIDS. Laura Brown, the second character in the movie, has experienced some similarities in her way of life with the character in the novel Mrs. Daloway after she read it. Virginia Woolf, the author of that novel, takes part in the movie as a writer whose work influences other characters. Losing a loved one makes the characters feel unreal happiness. Thus, according to their principle, the characters try to put things from the outside into themselves and raise death drive to achieve pleasure. This study aims to explain how the introjection process carried out by the characters in The Hours movie leads to a death drive and then find out which characters resisted the introjection process and got out of the death drive. The result shows that each character does introjection by imitating and applying what they receive from outside. It raises the death drive, and some of them commit suicide.

Abstract

Nowadays, many games are transformed into adaptation works. One of them is Mortal Kombat Game, adapted into Film Mortal Kombat Reboot 2021. Using these objects, the Mortal Kombat Game and its film adaptations Mortal Kombat Reboot 2021, this research analyzes the movie adaptation process since it contains some changes and omissions. The changes are inevitable because the media is transformed, which was originally in the form of game and adapted into a version with a shorter duration, a movie. This is in accordance with Hutcheon’s adaptation theory in the Interacting to Showing section, which is also used as the main theory to analyze the object of this research. There are also differences in terms of audiovisual and interaction with the audience. There are two problem formulations to be discussed in this research. First, what changes are made in the movie adaptation, and second, the consequences of differences in media of the stories in the games and films. To conduct this research, we use the descriptive comparative method to explain the differences. This method supports written information and pictures, which is important to study this article. The results of the research reveal that there are two changes that occur in this film adaptation. First, there are five different character visualizations and one additional character, and second, four plot changes. The researchers conclude that the adaptation made by the film production team is not much different from the appearance of the characters and the plot of the original game. Thus, the adapter does not completely change it from the original game but only expands it as a new story made for the film, but keeps the game as the main reference.

Abstract

Transstylization is a stylistic rewriting, a transposition whose main function is a change of style. It is concerned with the preparation of a text. In a stylistic rewriting of a text, it can be applied by stylization or superimposing additional stylistic elements onto a hypotext. This research attempts to reveal what transstylization techniques are applied on the portrayal of King Arthur in video game, which is adapted from the book entitled King Arthur Myth-Making and History, and how the transstylization generates losses and gains in the characterization of King Arthur. This study uses qualitative method that allows researcher to collect, analyze, and draw conclusions from  the data. The data of this research are in the form of visualization, characteristics, names, and stories that  are in accordance with the book entitled King Arthur Myth-Making and History. The data in this study were analyzed using Spradley’s technique of analysis. Transstylization by Gerard Genette and adaptation theory by Linda Hutcheon were applied to answer the problem in this research. 76 data were found in this research. From the data found, it was concluded that destylization is the dominant technique of transstylization in this research. This shows that the visualization, name and story of King Arthur in this research have a different pattern with the book. This research also shows how the transstylization causes losses and gains in the characterization of King Arthur in video games through the process Telling-Interacting. These findings contribute to knowledge about the transstylization of  King Arthur from the book entitled King Arthur Myth-Making and History into video games.
