Abstract

Although Islam allows the parents to make arrangements for their children, especially for marriage, it never stipulated laws ignoring their consent. This is, however, the case in Akim Oda, where women are forced into marriages in the name of Islam without their consent. The situation is worrying, and women, especially female Muslim youths who are forced into marriages, continue to be disadvantaged in terms of education and training. This research work, therefore, investigates the reasons for such happenings and compares it with Islam’s view on marriage within the context of forced marriage as practiced in Akim Oda. In this regard, the qualitative research method was employed. The primary data collection method included interviews with fifteen (15) respondents, including Chiefs, Imams, religious leaders, opinion leaders, parents, and female Muslim youths. Findings from the field indicate that forced marriages, in most cases within the study area, were to the benefit of the family and not to the female Muslim youths. It was also observed from the findings that parents and relatives collect monies for their daughters who ended up dropping out of school for marriages they are unprepared for.

Abstract

The Mappatemme Aqorang tradition in the Mattampung ritual is a tradition of reading the Qur'an 30 juz for the Bugis community in order to pray for the family of the deceased. This research is descriptive-qualitative, meaning that a study was conducted to get a general idea of the mappatemme aqorang tradition. The approach used is a phenomenological approach using the analytical tools of Max Weber's theory of social action. The results showed that the mappatemme aqorang tradition in the mattampung ritual is believed to be a hereditary tradition that has been passed down by its ancestors and as an act of spontaneity carried out for the Bugis community when a family dies by reading the Qur'an, including in the implementation of the mattampung ritual (commemoration of the day of death). In addition, this tradition consciously states that the recitation of the Qur'an has a psychological effect on the family because of the bad anxiety and worry experienced by the family left behind. Finally, this tradition has a value effect in interacting with other communities. The values contained are the values of legiulity (worship), social (friendship, solidarity, and education).

Abstract

Until the middle of the 20th century, many Muslim population countries became free and independent countries following the end of world colonization. Those countries try to adopt several modern political and legal values, including establishing democracy and state constitutions. One of the constitution's contents in a democratic country is guaranteeing and strengthening civil and political rights. Civil and political rights regulation should be written in a partial part of the constitution as a commitment to live in modern democratic circumstances. Philosophically, citizens' civil and political rights in democratic circumstances cannot be restricted by government. Nevertheless, a gap in the legal argument regarding the limitation of civil and political rights in constitutions is constantly discussed. This article looks at civil and political rights limitations in two cases in different countries: Indonesia and Turkiye. These two countries were chosen as subjective data based on the legal system's proximity pattern and socio-religious conditions. Both countries are also close to the civil law system and have historical references to Islam. In addition, both countries have experience with the restriction of religious organizations. Indonesia has dealt with the restriction of Hizbut Tahrir Movement. Meanwhile Turkiye has experience in banning Gulen Movement. By this background, some questions emerge: How do Indonesian and Turkish constitutions, as Muslim population countries, guarantee human rights issues? By using a comparative legal study and a sociological-empirical approach, this article compares the Indonesian and Turkiye constitutions to see how the two countries guarantee human rights, predominantly civil and political rights. The result of this article reveals that national consensus, national security, stability, and legitimate political power are some of the legal arguments that are always present in the discourse on restrictions on human rights. Under these conditions, human rights restrictions are commonly regulated in the constitution, which contains human rights laws.

Abstract

This study explores students’ engagement in a blended learning environment within an English Language Teaching (ELT) course at the English Language Education Study Program, Sultan Aji Muhammad Idris State Islamic University of Samarinda, Indonesia. Utilizing a descriptive survey design, the research combined quantitative data from Learning Management System (LMS) analytics with qualitative data from open-ended questionnaire responses to provide a comprehensive understanding of students' engagement patterns and perceptions. The findings revealed that while students generally demonstrated high levels of engagement, particularly in collaborative and discussion-based tasks, several challenges were also identified, including technical barriers, difficulties with digital literacy, and a desire for more synchronous interaction. Students expressed positive perceptions of the flexibility and accessibility offered by blended learning, although they also recommended improvements in LMS navigation and task instructions. Cultural factors, such as communal learning values, appeared to influence students' engagement behaviours. The study highlights the importance of designing interactive, supportive, and culturally responsive blended learning environments to optimize student engagement and learning outcomes in higher education.

Abstract

This qualitative research explores Ziauddin Sardar's critique of Western-influenced universal science. It employs a literature study to analyze Sardar's thoughts using various methods. The findings reveal that Islamic science, rooted in ethical principles, offers an alternative to Western science, which often overlooks diverse paradigms and local knowledge systems. While Islamic science excels in addressing region-specific issues, it may struggle with complex problems. In contrast, Western science, considered global, has historically caused environmental challenges by disregarding non-conventional paradigms. Therefore, Islamic science, with its inclusive approach to knowledge, presents a potential solution to the crises stemming from the dominance of Western scientific paradigms.
