Abstract

Substance abuse has a serious impact on the sleep quality of clients undergoing rehabilitation, often resulting in insomnia and other sleep disturbances that can hinder the recovery process. Poor sleep quality may exacerbate psychological conditions and increase the risk of relapse. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of implementing a token economy as a behavioral modification method to improve the sleep quality of clients with substance use disorders during their recovery process. This research employed a mixed-method approach using a sequential exploratory design. The results showed an improvement in sleep quality among all three subjects after the implementation of the token economy. These findings suggest that the token economy is effective as a positive reinforcement strategy in modifying sleep behavior in clients with substance use disorders and may serve as an alternative approach to support the success of recovery programs.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the subjective experiences of students with social anxiety in academic contexts, as well as the coping strategies they employ to manage it. Social anxiety refers to a form of anxiety that arises from the fear of negative evaluation in social interactions. In academic settings, this often manifests in situations such as presentations, group discussions, or communication with lecturers. A qualitative approach with a narrative method was employed. Five active university students who experienced symptoms of social anxiety were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using thematic-narrative analysis. The findings revealed that students experienced both physical symptoms (e.g., cold hands, heart palpitations, and sleep disturbances) and cognitive symptoms (e.g., overthinking and excessive fear of judgment). The coping strategies identified were categorized into two main types: problem-focused coping, such as practicing presentations and preparing scripts, and emotion-focused coping, such as praying, sharing with friends, and self-reflection. Some respondents also reported using avoidance strategies, such as skipping presentations due to feeling unprepared.

Abstract

This study examines the function of religiosity as a coping strategy for burnout in women who have experienced fatherlessness. Fatherlessness, characterized by the lack of a paternal figure either physically or emotionally, has been linked to heightened susceptibility to psychological distress, encompassing identity confusion, emotional instability, and burnout. A qualitative case study methodology was employed to gather data from two Muslim women aged 18–25 through comprehensive online interviews conducted via Google Meet. The data were subjected to thematic analysis to discern persistent patterns associated with religiosity and coping behavior. The results showed five main themes: (1) losing a father figure as a cause of burnout, (2) changes in identity and emotional dynamics after loss, (3) withdrawal as a first way to deal with loss, (4) religiosity as a way to deal with emotions and spirituality, and (5) crisis and spiritual acceptance. The findings suggest that religiosity serves a transformative function in assisting individuals to cope with burnout and emotional turmoil. Religious practices, including prayer, supplication, and Qur’anic reflection, offered emotional solace, a sense of connection, and a framework for meaning-making that culminated in acceptance and gratitude. The research concludes that religiosity functions as an emotional regulator and a source of psychological resilience for fatherless women, aiding their transition from emotional distress to spiritual tranquility. These findings emphasize the necessity of incorporating spiritual dimensions into psychological support and counseling interventions for individuals facing analogous conditions.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between optimism and subjective well-being among Tahfidz Islamic boarding school students. Students in Tahfidz schools face unique academic and spiritual demands that may influence their psychological well-being. Using a quantitative correlational research design, data were collected from 165 students selected through quota sampling. The research instruments included the Subjective Well-Being Scale by Aliya (2020) and the Optimism Scale by Asfia (2017). Data analysis employed Pearson’s Product-Moment Correlation using SPSS 26.0. The results revealed a significant positive relationship between optimism and subjective well-being (r = 0.367, p < 0.05), indicating that higher optimism corresponds to higher well-being among Tahfidz students. Among the optimism aspects, permanence showed the strongest correlation with well-being. These findings highlight the importance of fostering optimism to enhance students’ emotional resilience and life satisfaction within Islamic boarding school settings.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the flow experience of students who are active in the Psychology Student Association (HIMAPSI) at Malikussaleh University, amidst the academic pressures they face. Using a descriptive quantitative approach, 50 students became the subjects of the study through a total sampling technique. The research instrument was a validated flow scale that showed high reliability (Cronbach's Alpha= 0.930). The results showed that the majority of students (80%) were in the moderate flow category, 14% in the high category, and 6% in the low category. These findings highlight the importance of self-management strategies and environmental support in supporting the psychological well-being of students who play dual roles as academics and organizers.

Abstract

In the digital age, students often suffer from mental health problems because they use their smartphones too much, which makes it hard for them to control their emotions and feel good about themselves. The objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy of a digital detox intervention in enhancing emotional regulation and promoting tranquility among university students. Employing a mixed-method approach with a quasi-experimental design, five participants (S1–S5) engaged in a seven-day digital detox program that limited social media and non-essential digital activities. Data were gathered via self-report scales and narrative reflection journals, subsequently analyzed descriptively and thematically. The findings demonstrated substantial enhancements in emotional stability, concentration, and sleep quality, suggesting that diminished screen exposure facilitated psychological equilibrium and inner tranquility. The results show that a digital detox can be a good way to improve mental health, especially for people who are prone to becoming dependent on technology. Additional research involving larger and more heterogeneous samples is necessary to corroborate these findings.

Abstract

The phenomenon of happiness among the elderly living in nursing homes has attracted increasing scholarly attention due to its implications for psychological well-being and quality of life. This study explores the reconstruction of meaning and factors that contribute to elderly happiness within institutional settings in Indonesia. Through an integrative review of recent empirical studies from 2019 to 2025, the analysis identifies key determinants influencing happiness among residents of nursing homes, including religiosity, social support, psychological resilience, and engagement in daily activities. The findings reveal that spirituality and religious participation serve as essential coping mechanisms, fostering a sense of meaning and acceptance in later life. Social connectedness—manifested through peer relationships and staff support—also significantly enhances emotional satisfaction and reduces loneliness. Moreover, active involvement in structured social or religious programs contributes to a sense of belonging and purpose. Conversely, limited autonomy, weakened family ties, and inadequate emotional engagement were identified as major barriers to happiness. These insights align with the eudaimonic framework of well-being proposed by Ryff (1989) and the positive psychology perspective advanced by Seligman (2011), emphasizing that happiness in old age extends beyond pleasure to encompass meaning and self-realization. The study underscores the importance of a holistic care approach in Indonesian nursing homes—integrating psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural dimensions—to promote psychological well-being among the elderly.

Abstract

Interpersonal forgiveness is a crucial component of psychological well-being and positive character development, particularly in children. Given the known efficacy of narrative-based learning and the profound moral depth of religious stories, this study aims to investigate the effectiveness of a video intervention based on the story of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) in enhancing forgiveness among children. The study employed a quantitative experimental design using a Nonrandomized Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design. Participants were 20 children from the Rangkang Pustaka Community, divided equally into an experimental group (receiving the video intervention) and a control group (no intervention). Forgiveness was measured using an adapted Forgiveness Scale before and after the treatment. The results of the Independent Samples t-test showed a statistically significant difference between the posttest scores of the experimental group (Mean = 29.90) and the control group (Mean = 26.20), with t(18)=2.842 and p=0.011 (α=0.05). This finding confirms the rejection of the null hypothesis. In conclusion, the video intervention based on the story of Prophet Yusuf is an effective and highly practical tool for significantly increasing children's forgiveness levels. The study recommends integrating culturally and spiritually relevant narratives into character education programs to foster prosocial behavior.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the construct validity and reliability of the Self-Compassion Scale among adolescents from broken home families. Using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), the measurement model revealed two major factors that represent self-kindness versus self-judgment and mindfulness versus over-identification. The results indicated that all items showed significant and strong factor loadings (p < .001), demonstrating high internal consistency across subscales (Cronbach’s α ranging from .914 to .917). The goodness-of-fit indices also supported the adequacy of the model (CFI = .969, RMSEA = .048, GFI = .979). These findings suggest that the scale has strong psychometric properties and can be effectively used to assess self-compassion in adolescents experiencing family disruption. The study further revealed that self-compassion plays a vital role in enhancing emotional resilience and reducing self-critical tendencies among broken home adolescents. The implications of this research emphasize the importance of developing intervention programs that foster mindfulness, self-kindness, and acceptance as protective factors against psychological distress.

Abstract

Academic stress has become a common problem among university students due to various challenges in adapting to new roles and academic environments. This study aimed to examine the effect of emotional writing on reducing academic stress among students. The research employed a pretest–posttest control group design involving 20 students from Universitas Malikussaleh. Participants in the experimental group engaged in emotional writing activities, while the control group did not receive any treatment. Data were analyzed using a paired samples t-test to determine the effectiveness of the intervention. The analysis showed that the Sig. (2-tailed) value was greater than 0.05 (p = 0.181), indicating no significant difference between pretest and posttest scores in the experimental group. These findings suggest that emotional writing, in this study’s context, did not significantly reduce academic stress. However, this research contributes to understanding the complexity of stress-reduction interventions and highlights the need for further exploration of individual differences and contextual factors influencing emotional writing outcomes.
