Abstract

Job insecurity is often thought to cause lower job satisfaction. However, research shows that the relationship between these two variables is more complicated than previously assumed. Previous studies fail to provide conclusive results, which indicate that the relationships between job insecurity and job satisfaction may be moderated by other variables. Two variables that can explainthis relationship are employability, defined as employees’ perception of their abilities to find a new job, and work status differences (i.e., permanent and contract employees). Therefore, this study hypothesizes that employability will moderate the relationship between job insecurity and job satisfaction for, both, permanent and contract employees. Adapting scales from previous research, this study conducted a cross-sectional survey of 172 employees, comprised of permanent and contract employees, of a logistic services company in Indonesia. Results reveal that employability moderates the relationship between job insecurity and job satisfaction among permanent but not contract employees. This paper also discusses the implication of these results for the advancement of organizational behavior theory, especially for understanding the impact of job insecurity on job satisfaction.

The aim of the research in to investigate the influence of task complexity, time pressure, and five traits of auditor personality such as openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism on auditor performance. There have been a number of research findings on task complexity and time pressure on auditor performance, yet none shows consistency. This study, therefore, tries to provide a new point of view by using traits personality of auditor, which are rarely used in the research field of accounting. Participants in this studies are auditors who work on a public account firms in Bali. The results showed that task complexity and time pressure do not have significant effects on auditor performance. Abstract

This manuscript describes the phenomenon of variation in farmers’ individual responses to the realization of “top-down” government policy implemented during regional autonomy. The study aims to understand the process of social change as well as other theoretical problems with attention to contextual factors of the emergence of such variations. Individuals are active agents in interpreting phenomena and make decisions. Using an ethnographic approach and progressive contextualization, I am able to describe the variation in responses of Kahuman village farmers, Polanharjo Subdistrict, Klaten Regency, when Inpari 13 Programme was carried out. During the growing season of Inpari 13 in 2011, Kahuman’s farmers responded differently to program admission process, realization of planting, and pest control through spraying. The emergence of the varied responses indicates that individual farmers still determine all decisions within each farm management practices that they do.

Abstract

Understanding adaptation problem in international context is necessary as a source from which host universities formulate support services and counseling provision as well as for preparation before departure for international students. Although research on adjustment has burgeoned over the past several decades, relatively little is known about overseas student, particularly among Indonesian students as expatriates in some countries around the world. The present study is intended to examine the relationship of their life stress, religiosity, and adjustment. Data from 96 Indonesian international students were collected using demographic questions, personal adjustment scale, religiosity scale, and Index of Life Stress. Results revealed that the samples experienced moderate life stress, high religiosity, and high personal adjustment. Moreover, it was found that religiosity did not serve as moderator in the relationship between life stress and adjustment. Further, source of education financial support, as a part of general living issues, has unique contribution to their adjustment. Implication and limitations of this study are discussed in term of further research.

Abstract

The number of youth who try smoking is increasing, and the onset is getting earlier. This study tries to answer “Who or what are the main reasons of smoking for Indonesian adolescents, especially in DI Yogyakarta?” through Theory of Triadic Influences (cultural environment, social situation, and biology/personality). Current studies have focused only on cultural environment (mass media) and social situation (family and friends) influence. The sampling was conducted through convenience sampling method to 390 adolescents from 12 junior high schools in DI Yogyakarta. The average age of the subjects is 14 years old, with male to female ratio 55.6%:44.4%. The data were collected through anonymous questionnaires consisting of seven parts. Descriptive analysis was applied to the collected data by means of Chi Square test and logistic regression. The result showed that friends’ influence was the strongest compared with mass media and family to adolescents’ smoking behavior. Among several sub-agents of mass media, it was not television but billboards that had stronger influence. Parents’ influence was not significant compared with siblings and other family members. School friends’ influence was not significant compared with friends from school and other friends. Based on the findings, the applicable proposed interventions are denormalization of cigarette consumption and systematic intervention, such as raising the tobacco price, limiting advertisement and promotion, also regulating tobacco sales.

Abstract

This article discusses the response of Using people to sacred values and social function of Seblang ritual in the context of Using society’s social structure in Banyuwangi, East Java. Library study, participatory observation, and in-depth interview are methods used in this research, while the analysis uses functional-structural method. The result of this study shows that the Seblang ritual is a social institution functioned by Using people as an integral part of their social structure. The sacredness of Seblang also become a meeting point between “alam alus” and “alam kasar”; between the spirits of village’s ancestors (dhanyang) and human beings; between macro cosmos and micro cosmos. The existence of the Seblang ritual’s institution crosses over the temporal boundaries, so until now Using people still maintain the practice as their social and cultural condition support its preservation. The cultural condition relates to religious and knowledge system, while the social condition relates to social structure and geographical environment of village. Such cultural and social conditions become the belief of Using people toward socio-cultural function of Seblang, particularly for fertility in agriculture and their welfare. “The outer power”, both state’s authority and political parties, cannot intervene the Seblang ritual. Implicit memory and meta-cognition constructed in the minds of the public have contributed to their belief in the value of sacred Seblang ritual. They believe the negation of ancestor’s legacy will cause disharmony, both socially and psychologically, which will also lead to disharmony in the social structure of Using society.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between organizational memory and innovative work behavior. The study was conducted on 100 employees from various levels and positions in a company that produce and trade electronic solar equipment. To measure the organizational memory, we used Organizational Memory Scale developed by Dunhamm (2010) with ?=0.75. Then, to measure innovative work behavior, we used Innovative Work Behavior Scale from Janssen (2000) with ?=0.80. The results show that there is positive and significant correlation between organizational memory and innovative workbehavior (r=0.35; p<0.01). Hierarchical-regression analysis shows that (1) altogether education level, job type and organizational memory influences 19% of variance in innovative behavior; (2) when these variables are analysed together, only education level shows significant impact on innovative behavior. We discuss theoretical and methodological reasons for these results and offer future direction for research.

Abstract

Culture is an important variable that influences people’s behavior. Culture involves several elements, such as language, myth, ritual, custom, artifact, law, and values. However, values are known as the most important elements in describing culture. In 2011, a survey was conducted in Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, and Surabaya with 2,000 respondents to identify current Indonesian values. The results showed that Indonesian values could be operationalized with 35 items and seven dimensions of mutual assistance: democracy, religion, harmony, hospitality, religious fanaticism, and individualism. On the other hand, the extensive number of Indonesian values items (i.e., 35 items) may have several practical problems, such as longer questionnaires and sample requirements. Therefore, a short-form scale of Indonesian values is needed to enhance the understanding of Indonesian culture through its values. This research aimed to provide a short-form instrument for understanding Indonesian values. Specifically, this research explores psychometric assessments, including the dimensionality, reliability, and validity of the original and short-form scales of Indonesian values. In 2013, a survey with more than 1,000 questionnaires was distributed in Jakarta, Tangerang, Bandung, Semarang, and Surabaya. This research produced a short-form scale of Indonesian values that involves 13 items and the three dimensions of religion, democracy, and harmony. This paper provides an analysis of the data, a discussion of the findings, research limitations, and directions for future research.
