Abstract

Critical thinking is an essential competence in mathematics learning, particularly in circle topics that demand conceptual understanding and geometric reasoning. One relevant framework for examining this ability is Van Hiele’s levels of geometric thinking. This study aims to describe students’ critical thinking skills in solving circle problems based on their Van Hiele levels. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed. The subjects consisted of three Grade XI students, each representing Van Hiele level 0 (visualization), level 1 (analysis), and level 2 (informal deduction). Data were collected through circle problem-solving tests and interviews. Critical thinking was analyzed using Ennis’s indicators: elementary clarification, advanced clarification, strategies and tactics, and inference. The findings show that students at the visualization level understood problems and applied basic procedures but did not demonstrate sufficient inference and evaluation skills. Students at the analysis level explained relationships among circle elements and applied strategies appropriately, though their ability to recheck results was limited. Meanwhile, students at the informal deduction level exhibited more comprehensive critical thinking across all indicators. The study concludes that the higher the Van Hiele level, the stronger the quality of students’ critical thinking in solving circle problems.

Abstract

The rapid expansion of digital media has transformed religious communication, enabling religious practices traditionally conducted offline to function as informal religious education through online platforms such as YouTube. In this context, religious language functions not only as spiritual guidance but also as an educational medium that supports the development of participants’ religious literacy. This study aims to analyze the forms of religious speech acts employed by practitioners of Jam’iyyah Ruqyah Ahlussunah Waljamaah (JRA) in digital ruqyah practices on YouTube and to examine their educational implications for participants’ religious literacy. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected from selected ruqyah videos published on the official JRA YouTube channel. The data were analyzed using pragmatic analysis based on speech act theory, focusing on illocutionary and perlocutionary dimensions. The findings show that JRA practitioners predominantly employ illocutionary speech acts, particularly directive, expressive, and representative acts. Directive acts guide ritual behavior and learning processes, expressive acts foster emotional and spiritual engagement, and representative acts reinforce religious knowledge. The perlocutionary effects include increased religious understanding, ritual awareness, self-reflection, and strengthened religious literacy among participants. This study contributes to religiolinguistics and educational studies by demonstrating the role of religious speech acts in digital media as a medium for informal religious learning.

Abstract

In the context of globalization and cultural change, local oral traditions play an important role as informal educational spaces for transmitting values and cultural knowledge. This study examines the Galeng Tahun (10 Suro) tradition as a form of oral literature that functions as a medium for educational values and cultural transmission in Beber Hamlet. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, the research employs in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis to explore oral expressions embedded in ritual practices, including prayers, chants, advisory utterances, and narrative performances. The findings reveal that oral literature within the Galeng Tahun tradition serves significant educational functions by transmitting moral, social, and spiritual values across generations. These values are conveyed through symbolic language that fosters social harmony, respect for tradition, and awareness of the relationship between humans, nature, and the divine. Cultural transmission occurs through collective ritual participation, intergenerational storytelling, and community-based learning practices that enable younger generations to internalize local wisdom. Despite challenges posed by modernization, the Galeng Tahun tradition demonstrates continuity and adaptability as a form of informal cultural education. This study highlights oral literature as a valuable resource for value education and cultural sustainability within local communities.
