Abstract

Human Trafficking has an impact on various aspects of life. One of them is the experience of parents who have to lose their daughters as victims of human trafficking. Living in meaningful life after losing a loved child is challenging. The objective of this study is to explore the experience of bereaved parents particular, the parent who loses a beloved daughter who works away from home as a domestic worker. This research interviewed four participants (two couple of parents) of deceased victims of human trafficking in East Nusa Tenggara-Indonesia. The bereaved experience challenges their perspective on life, the human limitation, and the assumption about justice. Religion assists the parent in coping and meaning to deal with the bereaved experience. Related to the sense of control,  the bereaved parent perceives the same meaning of the Divine plan but in the term of justice, the bereaved parent has a different perspective that obtains a different outcome. A beloved parent passively surrenders to God's revenge while the other bereaved parent understands justice involves forgiveness also law enforcement of perpetrators.

Abstract

The discourse of extending the term of office of the president has become a classic phenomenon that keeps repeating itself. From the old order, the new order to the post-reform era, including during the current administration of President Joko Widodo. This paper describes the polemic of the discourse on extending the term of office of the president and discusses it with thoughts about politics, power, and democratic and theological-ethical government systems. This paper focuses on finding answers to the question, “How did the discourse on extending the presidency during the Joko Widodo administration finally fail in the middle of the road?” From a theological-ethical and political perspective, is it really only because of the better democratic system and the strength of civil society in Indonesia? Or is there another factor that will determine the success and failure of the discourse on extending the presidential term? Through this paper, the author argues that it is the ethical attitude of President Jokowi's leadership that will determine the end of the discourse.

Abstract

In general, the remedies given to victims tend to neglect the psychological treatment of perpetrators. This study aims to make room for this handling, Genesis 4:13-16, which presents a dialogue between God and Cain, will be reinterpreted from the perspective of the Psycho-theology of Forgiveness according to Fraser Watts. In addition to avoiding the saturation of interpretation of this passage which is usually considered as the etiology of the dispute between the Israelites and the Kenites or the origin of family disputes, this perspective of forgiveness can also serve as a lens for constructing the wisest attitude when a person experiences human anger toward others. The result of the interpretation concludes that God is trying to restore Cain by giving forgiveness so that he can get out of his shame and can continue his life.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the dynamics and impact of village head elections on the implementation of church services in Abat. The research was conducted using political theology theory as a means to present God's kingdom through the church. The church in its ministry must actively make changes as a form of presenting the kingdom of God in the middle of the world. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach involving data collection procedures, data analysis, data processing, and data interpretation. The author finds that there are factors such as intervention, provocation, interests, village funds, and divisions of areas of power that are the causes of conflict and strained relations between communities in Abat. These factors have an impact on the arrangement of services in the Congregation and the social life of the people. Therefore, the church needs to renew its understanding of politics as a vessel for preaching and glorifying God, by presenting the values of God's kingdom which is full of peace, justice, and freedom of life.

Abstract

This article aims to conduct a discourse on the theological thought of John Calvin, a church reformer, regarding the unity of theology and economics. Calvin's post-reformation theological view understands the world as a theater to glorify God. Economic development, one of the essential parts of the world, could lay the foundation for church missions. This idea is essential in equipping the church to encourage economic growth and empower people. However, the reformed churches, especially those with the Calvinist wing, still view the world in a dichotomous way. The separation between the physical and spiritual worlds, the sacred and the profane, makes the church's theological doctrine about the economy and empowering people to tend to be misunderstood. This study uses a qualitative approach, which is based on the exploration of John Calvin's theological arguments regarding economic development. In the end, this research confirms that Calvin's theological thinking about economics as a theater to glorify God needs to become an operative theology that urges the church to care about economic development and empowering people.

Abstract

This article analyzes the concept of economic development for the congregation of Riring Rumahsoal through the cultivation of the red zalacca plant to face poverty issues. This congregation has abundant natural products but they are still living on the poverty line. The aim of the research is to find out the theological views of the congregation members towards red zalacca as God's gift for human life in meeting the needs of life and to know the church's concrete actions in processing red zalacca. The research method used in this study is qualitative research. The results of the research show that the church missions are still on the ritual aspect. The church has not optimally empowered the people's economy by utilizing natural products that can be used as a source of family income. Congregational development is rooted in ecclesiology which directs itself to church praxis which includes various individual and group activities. Therefore, the building of the church does not only limit its function to the rituals but also the church should conduct the congregational development from an economic aspect, by empowering every available natural potential to meet the needs of the people's lives.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the circle of “othering” in Poso and how to cope with it. To investigate this, by conducting library research and participatory observation, I look back at the history of evangelism, which was introduced by NZG, and the conflict events that occurred in 1998-2007. By only limiting the study to Christian communities living in two villages I found that these two events were the key moments of how the “seeds” to “othering” people grew in some Christian societies. In addition, the approach to peace which only focuses on direct violence, still leaves trauma and structural violence from generation to generation, which in turn also creates suspicion among religious communities. In the end, through my observations of several events and social interactions that occur “naturally” in society, I propose the idea of building sustainable peace that has been practiced by several community groups in the present, through encounters with others, and building peace through the table fellowship.

Abstract

Violence always creates victims. In cases of domestic violence, as in this study, the victims are those who are considered inferior, namely women and children. Victims experience various forms of violence, such as physical, psychological, and social violence from their surroundings. Wounded and traumatic experiences become a kind of walled-in space, which for victims can protect them from experiences of violence, but at the same time unconsciously it becomes a prison that confines freedom and opportunities to achieve happiness and recovery in life. This research offers a theological perspective on forgiveness for the recovery of victims of domestic violence. Using qualitative research methods, data were collected and analyzed through field research, in-depth interviews, and literature analysis related to the theology of forgiveness in the Christian tradition. This research came to the conclusion that violence always leaves wounds and trauma for its victims. The theology of forgiveness reconstructs closed spaces in traumatic experiences into open spaces to welcome the restoration of life for victims. From the perspective of Christian theology, the God who is trusted is a God who remembers, forgives, and delivers.
