Abstract

Development of A Novel Methode for COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) Measurement based on Photoelectrochemical Cell: Characterization of TiO2/ITO Film Working Electrode. Nanosize TiO2 film, immobilized on an ITO (Indium Tin Oxide) glass, was successfully fabricated. The film was prepared by a dip coating technique in a hydrothermal sol-gel system and subjected to a heat treatment at 100° C up to 450° C. Characterization of the film by XRD, AFM, BET methods revealed the occurrence of anatase form and 9.64 nm in crystallite size; having three dimensional profile and roughness with height of typically 9.8 nm; and surface area of 58.21 m2 /g. The film then was employed as a working electrode in a photo electrochemical system (PES). This PES generated a photocurrent that proportional to the organic chemical concentration in the water sample. Integration of the photocurrent versus time gives a charge (Q) that represent the event of complete mineralization of organic chemical in the TiO2 surface and can be correlated to the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) of measured water. This system has a potential to be developed for a novel COD sensor

Abstract

Microbial succession and biochemical aspects of mandai fermentation at low salt concentration. Mandai is fermented food that traditionally made from the flesh of jack fruit (Arthocarphus champeden Spreg.). Usually mandai is made as high salt concentration. However, the objective of this research is to study the succession and biochemical aspects of microbials during fermentation at low salt concentration (10% w/v) for 14 days. During the period of fermentation microbial cell numbers and biochemical aspects were observed at the 3rd, 5th, 7th and 14th day. Total cell number of bacteria and yeast were measured by pour plate method. The measurement was also conducted on flesh before incubation. The biochemical aspect observation included the contents of reducing sugar, N-total, salt, and pH. The research results indicated that the pattern of microbial succession occurred the fermentation. Yeast cells grew dominantly (2.8 x 109 CFU/g) on the 5th day fermentation but bacteria were dominant at the end (1.1 x 107 CFU/g). The highest decrease of reducing sugar and N-total contents were 0.240% at the 14th day and 0.159% at the 5th day, respectively. However, salt concentration was relatively stable and pH was varied within the range of 3.71-6.12 for the whole period fermentation.

Abstract

Influencing of Deep Frying in Forming of Trans Fatty Acid. Frying process is one of the cooking’s techniques using vegetable oil. This process is commonly used in food industry, restaurants, food services, food retail and household scale. This is a laboratory experimental study which performed in laboratory of Public Health Nutrition FKM-UI and Integrated Laboratory IPB, Bogor from December 2005 until March 2006. It was conducted by two (2) type of treatment (used cooking oil ex cassava and meat) with 4 (four) times for each treatment. The objective of this study is to know the influence of frying by using deep frying (frying in high temperature and in a long time) and repeating to trans fatty acid formation in cooking oil. From the result revealed that fatty acid type mostly contained in a fresh cooking oil is oleic acid. Trans fatty acid was formed after second repeating of deep frying and increased in line with the frequent of repeating. Correlation test result had shown that negative association between elaidic acid (trans) and oleic acid (cis) (r = - 0,8; p value = 0.016). In accordance with the beginning of trans fatty acid formation, it would be better to use the cooking oil not more than twice.

Abstract

Physical Oceanographic Condition of the Western Waters of Sumatera (Simeulue Island Water) on August 2007 Pasca Tsunami December 2004. The physical oceanographic condition of the western waters of Sumatera was observed in August 2007 after tsunami disaster using the RV Baruna Jaya VII. The tenth CTD stations were observed for measuring the temperature and salinity. The temperature and salinity conditions after two years and seven months of the disaster have been normal as a usual condition. The temperature of 28 – 30o C gradually increased from north to south and salinity of 32.8 to 34 PSU gradually increased from the coastal area to the open Indian Ocean. The horizontal distributions and vertical profiles of measured parameters are explained in detail in this paper.

Abstract

Isolation of Cellulolytic Bacteria and Characterization of the Enzyme. Four of cellulolitic bacteria isolates had been characterized. The determination of cellulase activity was conducted at the highest production time, using crude enzymes with the modification of Miller methods (1959) on pure cellulose substrates such as CMC (Carboxymethyl cellulose), Avicel and Filter paper Whatman No. 1 as well as agriculture waste such as rice straw, corn cob and banana peel. Cellulase from C4-4, C5-1, C5-3 and C11-1 showed optimum activity at pH 5, 70°C, pH 3.5, 90°C, pH 5, 80°C and pH 8, 70°C, respectively. Avicel is a appropriate substrate for C4-4 cellulase whereas CMC for the other three. C11-1 cellulase has the highest cellulase enzyme activity on rice straw substrate whereas C4-4 cellulase on banana peel substrates. C5-1 and C5-3 cellulase have relatively low cellulase activities in degrading substrates of agriculture waste. However, isolates of C5-1 and C5-3 have high cellulase activities on banana peel substrates.

Abstract

Magnesium Effect to the Hardness of Al2O3/Al Ceramic Matrix Composites. Composite is an alternative material which has satisfying properties and can be accommodated for certain applications. Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) is one of the composite types that are very interesting in terms of high temperature applications material. In this paper, we investigate the effects of Mg addition on the hardness of Al2O3 Ceramic Matrix Composites which was produced by directed metal oxidation (Dimox) method. The CMCs material is made by placing Al ingot under mixture alumina and percentage of Mg 5, 8, 10, and 12% wt. The processing temperature was 1100°C for 24 hours followed by cooling to room temperature in the furnace. The results show that increasing of infiltration, the hardness increased to 1221 VHN maximum at 8% wt Mg and then decrease again as the increment amount of Mg.
