Abstract

Many agents have been involved to empower peatland farmers who cultivate Liberica Cofee. They have the same general purposes to save farming practices, but they have different programs and activities.  Many agents involved had worried to blur focus and targets. Hence, the purpose of this study is to reveal empowering practice and performance.  The study is located in  Mekar Jaya village,  the center of peatland Liberica Coffee, and used a qualitative method where field notes, observation, and in-depth interviews were used. Data collection was conducted in conjunction with the empowerment activities carried out by the research team in 2017-2019. The results showed the importance of empowering focus, coordination between groups, real participation of all groups and its members, and the need for local government intervention.   Neglecting those will diminish the peatland farming environment function and farming roles to the farmer.  In the future, the practice of empowerment will be more complex due to the global demands on the sustainability of peatlands increase. Hence, empowering could be started from farming improving, increasing productivity, and followed by increasing farmer's and group’s capacity to manage both on economics and environmental value of peatland farming.

Abstract

Rapid population growth and the market expansion in various sectors in Bangkalan Regency have contributed to a rise in land demand. Therefore, the creations of new areas through land/coastal reclamation projects are taken place in this region. Based on this phenomenon, this study aims to analyze the potential and benefits of reclamation in Bangkalan Regency. The study uses a socio-legal approach and is a field research with verstehen (hermeneutic) approach. Data were obtained from informants, especially residents who have benefited from reclaimed land, village apparatus, and related agencies. Data were analyzed using triangulation technique. The results of the study found that in Bangkalan Regency, tourism in reclaimed land involves coastal communities, including fishermen, to manage the area, and it can improve community welfare. Furthermore, reclaimed land is used to expand their current land for settlement and business, as well as for the development of natural resource conservation such as mangroves and fish ponds. Reclaimed land in Bangkalan Regency is used for tourist destinations and settlement areas for the communities with their business.

Abstract

Nigeria's bean market is still characterized by inefficient and weak integration due to inadequate price information and market infrastructure. Therefore, the study investigates the price variation and transmission of beans markets in Nigeria's Southwest region. The study employed an average monthly price of white and brown beans in rural and urban markets spanning March 2014 to July 2019. Coefficient of variation (CV), Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF), Johansen co-integration test and Granger-Causality tests were the analytical tools used for the analysis. The results of CV indicated a spike variation of beans prices over the periods. Urban brown beans experienced the lowest variability of 1.56% in 2015, while rural brown beans experienced the highest variability of 30.03% in 2014. The co-integration test established a long-run dynamic between bean products of different varieties in the same market. However, it failed in the same products in different markets using a bivariate co-integration test. The multivariate co-integration test’s results affirmed that bean markets are strongly linked together in the long-run. The results of Granger-causality showed uni-directional and bi-directional causalities in the beans markets. Rural white beans assumed the lead position and formed the major price transmission in the beans’ markets in the area. Therefore, for more efficiency in the beans’ rural and urban markets, the government should design appropriate market strategies such as accessible market information and infrastructures.

Abstract

As an agricultural country, Indonesia still imports soybeans to meet domestic soybean needs. The gap between national soybean production and consumption causes the government to import. Based on this, this study aims to analyze the factors that influence soybean imports in Indonesia. The data used are time series data for the period 2003-2018. Data is sourced from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), United Nations International Trade Statistics Database (UN COMTRADE), the Central Bureau of Statistics of the Republic of Indonesia, World Bank, Bank Indonesia, and the Ministry of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia. The analysis method uses SEM-Partial Least Square (PLS). The results showed that the macroeconomic conditions directly affect soybean production and consumption. On the other hand, consumption has a direct effect, but production has no direct effect on soybean imports. Macroeconomic conditions do not have a direct effect on soybean imports. Nevertheless, the total effect (combined direct and indirect effects) is significant from macroeconomic conditions on soybean imports.

Kampung Keluarga Berkualitas (Kampung KB) is one of the development programs to create quality families in Indonesia. Kampung KB is a village-level regional unit with integration and convergence in implementing empowerment and strengthening of family institutions in all its dimensions to improve the quality of human resources, families, and communities. The growth of Kampung KB in Jambi Province shows the high government's attention to this program to improve the quality of life of its people. However, the Kampung KB's success in improving the community's quality of life is largely determined by the level of community participation itself. This study analyzes the factors that influence community participation in the Kampung KB Program in Jambi Province. This study uses primary data obtained through target group respondents in Kampung KB in Jambi Province. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a binary logit regression model. The study results found that the overall level of community participation in the Kampung KB Program was moderate.
