Abstract

This research aims to know the significant difference of using fun game Kahoot to students in learning the vocabulary mastery of Senior High School. The objectives of the study are; (1) to find out the students’ ability in vocabulary who were taught with fun game Kahoot (2) to find out the students’ ability in vocabulary who were taught without fun game Kahoot (3) to find out the significant difference on vocabulary mastery of the eleventh-grade students who were taught using fun game Kahoot and who were taught without using fun game Kahoot. This research was going through quasi-experimental design consisted of two classes. 36 XI MIPA 4 and 35 XI MIPA 3 of SMAN 1 Boja in the academic year 2021/2022 was taken as the sample. The instrument was valid and reliable, the difficulty level was categorized as a medium, and the discriminating power was organized well. It can be known by the result of data. The researchers using SPSS in this research. The data collected were analyzed using a t-test. It was found that the students’ ability to learn vocabulary taught with fun game Kahoot was improved. The student's ability to learn vocabulary that was taught without fun game Kahoot was poor. The value of the t-test was higher than the t-table (20, 04>1, 67). It means teaching vocabulary using the fun game Kahoot was effective. At last, the paper proposed suggestions for teachers to using fun game Kahoot in teaching vocabulary.Keywords: Fun Game Kahoot, vocabulary, effectiveness

Abstract

Online learning is a new policy from the minister of education and culture in the midst of the covid-19 pandemic. It is the first time for english students in IKIP PGRI Bojonegoro do the online learning in speaking class. Speaking is one of the important skills learned in english language. In this era the technology is developing rapidly. Many applications that can support online learning, One of them is whatsapp. Whatsapp is a simple, secure, and reliable messaging application. This research discuss about students’ perception on the use of whatsapp group in speaking class. The study aim to find out english students perception on the use of whatsapp group in speaking class and to find out english students challenges on the use of whatsapp group in speaking class. This research includes qualitative research with descriptive qualitative. The participant of this research was 35 students of the thirth semester of English Education Department academic year of 2020/2021 in IKIP PGRI Bojonegoro. The techniques of collecting data are interview, questionnaire and documentation. In this research researcher analyzed data by data reduction, data display and drawing conclusions. The result show that students perception on the use of whatsapp group in speaking class is less interesting and less effective. Their challenges on the use of whatsapp group are internet connection, feeling bored and lazy, difficult to understand the materials and the time is not according to the schedule. online learning using whatsapp group in speaking class needs more interesting learning activity.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to discover there was a substantial effect of using comic strips on students’ vocabulary and reading comprehension in the tenth grade at SMK Lab Business School Kota Tangerang. The researcher used a quantitative method. In this study, pre-experimental research one-group pre-test post-test was used with 40 students as the sample, which was taken at non-random. The instruments for data collection were vocabulary and reading comprehension tests. The data distribution was not normal, so the researcher used Wilcoxon Signed Rank to analyze it. The Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test vocabulary and reading comprehension results of the above pre-test and post-test data were 0.000 less than 0.05. The mean score for the pre-test vocabulary was 58.12 and the mean score for the post-test vocabulary was 78.63. Meanwhile, the pre-test reading comprehension score was 58.12 and the post-test score was 78.63. It revealed a significant increase from the first to the second mean score. As a result, the findings of this study, which used comic strips to improve students’ vocabulary and reading comprehension in the tenth grade at SMK Lab Business School Kota Tangerang had a significant effect. This suggests that comic strips can be used as an alternative media in the process of teaching vocabulary and reading comprehension.Keywords: Comic Strip, Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary

Abstract

Pronunciation is a significant aspect in communication that associates to how people reveal words for communication. People who speak with the L2 language can be impacted with their L1 in their pronunciation. The accent of L1 tends to dominate L2 in pronouncing a particular word. Thus, it also cannot be easily discharged when someone speaks in L2. This research intends to investigate the impact of L1 in learning L2, especially the Javanese accent, into an English accent. Descriptive qualitative would be utilized as the methodology for constructing this paper. Subsequently, the data would be analyzed using the Comparison and Contrast by Clark (1995) method. Based on the finding, the researchers found 15 words pronounced with Javanese accents. It indicates that L1 can influence pronouncing a word in L2. It will be better if this condition can be conquered. Learning and practicing more are advised in order to retaliate this problem.

Abstract

Suggestopedia: Answering English Collaborative Learning Concept in Disruptive Era 4.0 Suggestopedia is a representation of a teaching method that is integrated with students' learning preferences and is used as a collaborative learning method to achieve quality education that is in line with the rapid development of technology and it is answering the English collaborative learning concept in disruptive era 4.0. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of suggestopedia in the teaching of English. This study is also supported by the results of students’ statement about suggestopedia for their English learning and its contribution to collaborative learning concept in industrial revolution 4.0. The method used was pre-experimental design of one group pre-test and post-test. The instruments were a multiple choice English test and questionnaire to gain the students’ perspective on the implementation of suggestopedia. The results revealed that the students performed better in the post-test of English skill than in the pre-test.Keywords: Suggestopedia, collaborative learning, method, digitalization.

Abstract

This study was conducted for discovering the students’ preference of learning Grammar using TOEFL Applications; 1) NST TOEFL Explorer and 2) Genius TOEFL. This research was important in order to evaluate the effective media for learning grammar TOEFL. The researchers used descriptive research which was conducted on 29th March 2019 until 28th May 2019. The subject of this study was the students’ who joined in ICT-Based learning of Grammar IV Course at Universitas PGRI Wiranegara Pasuruan. To get the data, the researchers used some instruments. Those were observation, questionnaire, interview, and documentation. The finding from the questionnaire showed that there were 32% of students class A had choosen NST TOEFL Explorer application, but 68% of them had preferred using Genius TOEFL application. There were 17% of students class B choosen NST TOEFL Explorer application and 83% of students class B had preferred using Genius TOEFL application. From this percentage, it can be shown that Genius TOEFL was more preferred to use for Grammar IV Course in Universitas PGRI Wiranegara Pasuruan. It was also found that the students average score after using NST TOEFL application was 20, whereas they got 65 by using Genius TOEFL. This result did not claim that Genius TOEFL was better than NST TOEFL explorer, but this contributed how an application could enhance the students’ interest in using it for learnig and support their achievement. Future researchers are suggested to justify this research result to formulate best criteria of effective ICT-based media.Keywords: ICT, learning Media, NST TOEFL Explorer, Genius TOEFL, Students’ Preference.

Abstract

The research aims to find out lexical and contextual meaning in the lyrics of Maroon 5 songs. This research chose five songs from Maroon 5; titled Maps, Leaving California, In Your Pocket, New Love, and Sugar. The research method used descriptive qualitative. The focus of this research is describing the context found lexical and contextual meaning theory by Mansoer Pateda to conduct this research. The step to obtain the data is collecting source of the data from Maroon 5 songs taken from the internet. After that, the writers select, read and listen the songs which contain lexical and contextual meaning the content of the songs. As a result of this research, it found 34 dates with lexical and contextual meanings. The result of this research is a complex romantic love story, or the bitter sweetness of a relationship of happiness, betrayal, struggle, and even loss.Keywords: semantic, lexical meaning, contextual meaning, songs, Maroon 5

Abstract

AbstractAnalysis of Racism in “12 Years A Slave” Movie Directed By Steve Mcqueen. Racism mostly still happens in many countries, especially the country with a lot of majorities and minority groups with very strict differences in characteristics such as in the United States of America or other European countries. This action is depicted very clearly in racism in 12 years movie. The study aims to analyze racism in 12 years movie directed by Steve Mcqueen. The method used is descriptive qualitative. The result of the study shows that racial prejudice that occurs in 12 Years a Slave Movie happened in the four social aspects of social structure, there are in the aspect of economic life, political and legal process, and in educational aspect. This study also reveals that the novel also reflects the racial prejudice in its social aspects of social structure in Southern America in the 1950s.Keywords: racism, discrimination, characters

Abstract

Pyschopathy Traits: An Analysis Of Main Character In the Novel "Mine" by SitiNur Atika. A psychopath is a person with disordered psychology who hasdifficulties conforming to the social standards that exist in their surroundings.This study focused on the psychotic aspect of Sean, a character in Mine novel.The descriptive qualitative approach and Robert D. Hare's theory were utilized inthis study to uncover Sean's psychopathic features. The findings of this studyshow that Sean possesses five psychopathic characteristics. That is,mercilessness, possessiveness, shallow emotionality, lack of empathy, and asense of personal satisfaction.Keywords: Psychopathy, traits

Abstract

Depicting EFL Learners' Strategies and Dilemma in Translation. The present study isaimed at depicting EFL learners? strategies and dilemma in conducting English-Indonesia translations. This study will employ survey design with quantitativeapproach. The participants will be 124 EFL learners who are joining translation classat English Education Department, UIN Mataram in academic year 2021/2022. Theadapted questionnaire comprises translation problems in terms of vocabulary,culture understanding, choice of strategy, grammar and specific field of study will beadministered to participants. Furthermore, the collected data will be analyzedstatistically, portrayed into charts, and discussed with existed theories. The result ofthe research showed that all strategies (Newmark, 1988) were applied by students.However, the most dominant strategies used were recognized translation,transference, functional equivalent, synonymy, and shifts. Similar to the analysis onthe EFL students? dilemma in translation, students experienced five dilemmas suchas facing difficulty to choose best strategy to translate, owning limited vocabulary,getting difficult in matching SL and TL grammar, lacking of culture understanding,and being unable to know the translation of specific term in different field. Thelowest frequency of students? acknowledgement on the dilemma was about theunderstanding on TL culture.Keywords: Translation; EFL learners; dilemma; Indonesia
