Abstract

Latterly, writing poems manually becomes such a hesitating process in the realm of senior high school students. Lack of experience in writing poems is also one of the difficulties for them. Thus, a poem generator namely Poem Generator was conducted to aid students writing poems. This study aimed to describe the students’ voice related to the use of Poem Generator in writing poems. This study is guided under the descriptive qualitative research design through close-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interview to answer the research question. There were 31 students of XI IPA 1 and 2 were involved as the participants in answering the questionnaire and 6 random selected students were also involved in the interview. The result revealed that the majority of students considered the use of Poem Generator helpful in writing poetry instantly. Although the meaning was sometimes difficult to understand, some participants agreed that the Poem Generator website helped them gain new vocabulary and was a fun experience because they got to know new technology.

Abstract

Hybrid One” is one of the learning management systems which is own by SMPN 1 Lamongan to facilitate students learning process while implementing a blended learning system. This study used a descriptive qualitative design to find how “Hybrid One” works and how the use of “Hybrid One” during the learning process. Researchers used two instruments to find the data, those are Questionnaires which were distributed to seventh-grade students, and interview guidelines which were conducted to 3 English teachers in the school selected. The result of the study showed that “Hybrid One” is an ideal learning management system to be used to support the students’ learning process during this pandemic era. It could be seen from the aspects, they are Implementation, strength, weakness, effectiveness, and application which could work and use appropriately. Although a feature of Hybrid One cannot be used maximally, the others could work maximally during the English learning process

Abstract

For Indonesians, which are non-native English speakers, learning English is complex due to unpredictable spelling and complicated grammar. Even so, they are able to be experts in English since they possess a key element that is motivation. The learning motivation for each individual is different which may be influenced by gender and age factors. Therefore, this study exists to investigate the distinct motivation possessed by male and female learners as well as different age groups of learners. This study also aims to find out what kind of motivation each group had (intrinsic, instrumental, or integrative motivation) as well as its level. This research was conducted using a cross-sectional study by administering questionnaires to 64 participants. The sample of this study was 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th-semester students of English Language Education Department UINSA academic year 2020/2021. The findings revealed that there is a significant difference in motivation to learn English in terms of gender (Sig (2-tailed= .016), but none in distinct age groups (Sig (2-tailed=.707). Besides, both male and female learners obtained a moderate level in instrumental motivation. It was identical to the result of 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th-semester students. The findings of this study will be very fruitful for lecturers, students, and other researchers.

Abstract

Abstrak : Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui tingkat keterbacaan teks bacaan dalam “Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris untuk SMA/MA XI” yang diterbitkan oleh Mediatama dengan menggunakan tes cloze pada siswa kelas sebelas SMAN 1 Sekaran tahun ajaran 2021/2022. Tes terdiri dari enam teks bacaan sebagai sampel dari populasi 47 teks bacaan dalam buku teks. Tes cloze diberikan kepada 45 siswa sebagai sampel dari populasi 216 siswa kelas XI dengan menggunakan teknik purposive clusters sampling. Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian kualitatif. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif dan didukung dengan metode penelitian kepustakaan. Prosedur dilakukan dengan membagikan tes cloze kepada siswa, mengumpulkan data, menghitung data, menganalisis data, menafsirkan data dan yang terakhir menyimpulkan hasil belajar. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa teks 1 sampai 4 mendapat nilai rata-rata kurang dari 53%. Masing-masing skor adalah 51,99%, 48,96%, 52,36% dan 51,10%. teks bacaan tersebut termasuk dalam tingkat Instruksional; Artinya siswa belum dapat memahami teks secara mandiri, mereka masih membutuhkan bimbingan dari guru dan teks-teks tersebut diperkirakan sesuai dengan kesulitan. Sedangkan teks 5 dan 6 mendapat nilai rata-rata di atas 53%. Skor tersebut adalah 63,39% dan 61,89%. teks bacaan tersebut termasuk tingkat Mandiri; artinya siswa dapat memahaminya sendiri dan teks diprediksi cukup mudah. Dari hasil temuan, penulis mendapatkan nilai rata-rata dari 6 teks bacaan adalah 54,95%. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa teks bacaan dalam Bahasa Inggris dan Sastra Inggris untuk SMA/MA XI semakin mendekati tingkat Instruksional. Artinya siswa cukup mudah memahami tetapi masih membutuhkan petunjuk atau bimbingan dari guru. Sehingga layak digunakan oleh kelas dan guru SMAN 1 Sekaran sebagai instrumen belajar mengajar.

Abstract

The use of YouTube in language teaching is no longer considered a new idea. In this study, the researcher investigated the use of YouTube movie clips in teaching listening from a student’s response, specifically in English education class. The study aims at portraying and describing the nature of how the lecturer applies YouTube movie clips in teaching listening classes for university students. The data were collected from the lecturer through observation, interviews, and field notes. A total of 26 English Department students in the Extensive Listening class were chosen as the participants of the study. The result of this study shows the students’ motivation improved by the feedback from their answer and their score. Their participation can be seen when the lecturer gave them feedback on their mistakes in spelling, pronunciation, vocabulary meaning, and content comprehension. The findings also show that there are a lot of ways that can be applied in language teaching by adopting media. Listening could be measured by the response answer to the writing or speaking skill of the students. Authentic material is used to make the relevant material for students’ listening improvement. It is suggested that the lecturer can implement various techniques or media in their language class.

Abstract

Indonesian students in senior high school in the language program found it difficult to make both English interrogative sentences and Mandarin interrogative sentences. To assist the English and Mandarin teachers in overcoming the problem, a contrastive study of both English and Mandarin interrogative sentences needs to be investigated. Hence, this article purposes to reveal the similarities and differences between English and Mandarin interrogative sentences found in Indonesian textbooks used by teachers. Qualitative descriptive research was used by describing both similarities and differences. The result generates several similarities and differences in interrogative sentences between English and Mandarin. Both languages are similar because they both have five kinds of interrogative sentences which have the same meaning and required similar answers. Among five types of interrogative sentences in English or Mandarin, some of them use several predicates and object simultaneously in one question. The use of the auxiliary verb in English and Mandarine's interrogative sentence is dissimilar. In English interrogative sentences, auxiliary verbs are used accord with the tenses used, while in Mandarin they are not. Besides, auxiliary verbs in English interrogative sentences must precede the subject, but in Mandarin, they are at the end of the sentence.

Abstract

This reasearch tries to find out the word from English and Indonesian language which have reduplication word. In the communication process, reduplication word always used in our daily activty. The data of this written were taken form dictionary and oral communication. The researcher compares both of the language to find the similarities and differnces from the reduplication process by using descriptive qualitavite method. The reduplication shows the change of word identity and category like in full reduplication (bye-bye, buku-buku), reduplication with vowel changes (zig-zag, bolak-balik), and reduplication with consonant changes (walkie-talkie, sayur-mayur). The basic form of the word is always present in language use, the meaning of the basic form of the word is always related to the meaning of the word affixed. Then the words after having reduplication process have a new meaning specially in English and Indonesian language.

Abstract

A novel of Secuil Hati Wanita di Teluk Eden by Vanny Chrisma W. is a literary work with religious nuances that can provide an interesting experience for living everyday life. This novel has an inner conflict experienced by the main character, so that the novel is studied with the study of literary psychology. This study reveals how the inner conflict experienced by the main character in the form of sadness, hatred, fear and how the main character's efforts in overcoming conflict in the novel Secuil Hati Wanita di Teluk Eden by Vanny Chrisma W. This study uses a literary psychology approach with descriptive analysis method. This method is carried out by presenting a description of the facts that exist in literary works, and followed by an analysis of these facts. The result of this research is the inner conflict experienced by the main character Dela Eden. The life he lived made his mind shaken. There are three classifications of emotions as a result of the inner conflict they experience, namely sadness, hatred and fear. The journey of life that he faced made him very sad. Since her husband was appointed as the leader of the pirates, the main character feels conflicted every time. Because suddenly the husband's attitude changed to be rude, cruel and arbitrary. The efforts made by the main character in overcoming the inner conflict experienced by the main character is to always draw closer to God. The main character in overcoming inner conflict by rebelling is always against the will of her husband who he thinks is not in accordance with what he knows and understands.

Abstract

Code mixing is the infiltration of sentence elements from one language into another in the form of words, phrases, repetitions of words or idioms. Islamic boarding school is a place that uses several languages, both in daily communication and in the teaching and learning process. The example from the Matholi'ul Anwar Simo Sungelebak Islamic boarding school, Karanggeneng Lamongan, uses two or more languages ​​in communicating, both daily and in the teaching and learning process. Data collection methods and techniques used in this study are the listening method and the interview method. The data taken for this research material is the utterance of the students of the Matholi'ul Anwar Simo Islamic boarding school with the recording technique. This study obtained results, namely (1) the types of language used by the students at the Matholi'ul Anwar Simo Islamic boarding school are Indonesian, Javanese, English, and Arabic. (2) the form of code mixing used by the students in Islamic boarding schools is the insertion of elements in the form of words: (a) nouns (nouns), (b) verbs (verbs), (c) adjectives (adjectives), ( d) pronouns (pronominals), and (e) question words. the insertion of elements in the form of phrases, the insertion of elements in the form of clauses, the insertion of elements in the form of repetition of words, and the insertion of elements in the form of expressions or idioms. 3) the factors that cause code mixing of the students of the Matholi'ul Anwar Simo Sungelebak Karanggeneng Lamongan Islamic boarding school include: (a) the presence of other speakers, (b) respect for the interlocutor, and (c) the environment.

Abstract

Through his novel, Nyai Gowok , Budi Sardjono describes aspects of Javanese culture. This research focuses on two problems, namely: (1) the function of literature and (2) the literary values ​​contained in the novel Nyai Gowok by Budi Sardjono. The approach used in this study is a qualitative descriptive approach. The data in this study are excerpts of novels related to the function of literature and also the values ​​in literature which include moral values, social values, and also the spiritual values ​​of Javanese society. While the data source is in the novel entitled Nyai Gowok , Budi Sardjono. Collecting data in this study using library, listening, and note-taking techniques, collecting and selecting data according to the research objectives, and combining them with the relevant theories. To analyze it, the writer uses the steps of (1) rereading carefully the results of the notes that have been obtained in the field, (2) classifying, (3) rereading the literature related to the relevant study problems that need to be done.
