Core Subject :
Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional is a biannual peer-reviewed journal that specialises in foreign policy, international security, international political economy, and transnational issues involving actors of the Global South, having implications towards the Global South, or perspectives from the Global South that are often overlooked in the mainstream journals in the Global North. With its first issue published in 1990, Global is the oldest university-based journal of International Relations in Indonesia, a historically leading actor in the Global South. Hosted by the Department of International Relations, Universitas Indonesia, Global has been serving as one of the primary platforms for ideas exchanges among Indonesia’s most influential thinkers and beyond. In its attempt to internationalise and further bridge the North and South perspectives, the journal welcomes submission of manuscripts that would be of interest to scholarly communities and policymakers. For this purpose, since 2019 Global only publishes articles in English. Global publishes two types of articles: original research articles offering theory-driven empirical analysis and review articles that critically examine contemporary debates in International Relations literature.

Abstract

This paper will explore the Asian way of dealing with religious, ethnic, and cultural diversity and how it dif fers from the Western liberal democratic model of multiculturalism. As argued by Samuel Huntington, glob alization is causing increasing interactions between peoples who previously would not have had any interac tion with each other. These interactions intensify identity consciousness and awareness of differences. In South-East Asia, as in other parts of the world, this means the rise of indigenous ri hts, majority-minority g power-sharing and the need to reconceptualize the idea of diversity and citizenship. The paper will examine how South-East Asian people would approach these issues, using mainly their cultural and reli iou tools. These tools are often referred to and are widely accepted as Asian Values, and include concepts such as har mony, concensus and commonality. The paper will also show that multiculturalism in Asia may not fit the concepts and models of Western's (liberal) multiculturalism.

Abstract

In the last three decades we witness the rise of global capitalism that dominates the world. It has been quite successful in persuading governments around the globe to adopt and pursue its values, norms and policies. Departing from the view based on reason and moral superiority of capitalism that is responsible for the so called its historical victory, this article argues that the main factor is simply the politics. The rise of the dom inating global capitalism should be better understood as being closely connected to three political process that reshape the balance of class power: First, the restoration of the dominant class power at the expense of the working class, the peasants and the poor in general; second, the politics of justification for this resurgence by using neo-liberalism as ideological propaganda; and, third, the manipulation of critics to empower the very system, that is, capitalism, being criticized. The worst part of this is that the global capitalism, with its three political processes, touches upon all continents and countries, including Indonesia.

Abstract

This article will argue that Third Debate is the 'revolution turn' in the study of international relations. There are some explanations to conduct this argument: the description of the history of international relations thought and epistemological problem. This illustration will lead us to understand that there is a deeply dynamic debate in philosophy circumstances. We can not close the eyes to this debate otherwise we will be stucked and trapped in the dogmatism, stagnatism and ideology. Epistemological problem of philosophy is one of the foundations of the entire big problem that should be discussed. From epistemological scrutiny, this article believes in Smith illustration that the variety of epistemological types will solve the problem of dog matism, stagnatism and ideology in the study of international relations. This 'revolutions turn' will achieve variety of truth, a wisdom, and a freedom from (of) dogmatism, stagnatism and ideology in the study of inter national relations.

Abstract

This article tries to examine the relation between Cyberspace and Civil Society, especially in the post modem era. The writer believes that there is contestation amongst civil society, government, and private sector in order to dominate the public sphere. By using its apparatus, state is dominantly dominating public sphere in every day life. By using high technology and huge amount capital, private sector is successful in dominating public sphere especially in form of mass media. Private sector is much more profitable because by using mass media such television, private sector can dominate not only public sphere but also private sphere of society. Thus, where is civil society? Due to the lack of capital, civil society is being marginalized from public sphere. Even the number of NGO that is representing civil society is always increasing, in fact, the civic engagement is decreasing. Entering the post modem era which is signed by the rise of cyberspace, the condition is turn 180 degree. Cyberspace gives civil society the space to exist in public sphere. In one hand, cyberspace gives us space without any control and domination where all people free to express their self. In the other hand, it gives us an anarchist space that can not be controlled.

Abstract

This article tries to analyze Indonesia's foreign policy at the early 2Ist century, especially during the period of post 9/11 terrorist attack. Since then, the international dynamics focuses more on countries in which Moslem society become the majority, mostly caused by the spread of inter-subjective discourse on the idea of war against terrorism promoted by the government of the United States of America. America then pays more attention on those countries, because they are suspected to be the 'source' of contemporary terrorist movements. Indonesia then, as an Islamic-majority country tries to build bridge between the western countries and Islamic countries. The Indonesian government attempt to construct the image that Islam can also stand in line with democracy. For that reason, Department of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia (DEPLU RI) builds the identity of Indonesian foreign policy as a 'Moderate-Islamic country'. However, on the reality, Indonesian foreign policy's new identity hasn't worked well, because Islam in Indonesia never comes up as the mainstream of Indonesian politics. By using the constructivi s t approach, thi s article tries to explain why the moderate-Islamic identity of Indonesian foreign policy failed to raise Indonesia image in the international world
