Abstract

Calculus is a foundational discipline critical for both academic and professional growth. This study, conducted at a state college in Davao de Oro, Philippines, sought to develop Strategic Intervention Materials (SIMs) to address key challenges in Calculus I. Utilizing a developmental research design, the study followed a modified ADD model comprising three stages: analysis, design, and development. Participants included 44 prospective mathematics teachers, selected through random sampling, and five experts in mathematics education and instructional material development. Data collection involved a survey to identify the least mastered topics and validation sheets. The study identified specific areas of difficulty, including Maxima and Minima, Derivatives of Logarithmic and Exponential Functions, Functions with Arguments Approaching Infinity, Derivatives of Inverse Trigonometric Functions, Antiderivatives of Algebraic Functions, and the Constant of Integration. The resulting SIMs were evaluated and demonstrated outstanding content validity, face validity, clarity of presentation, logical organization, accuracy, and relevance. Calculus instructors are encouraged to integrate these SIMs into their curriculum to enhance student understanding in these challenging areas. The study further recommends that calculus teachers employ varied, research-based methodologies to effectively bridge learning gaps in calculus, ultimately fostering a more comprehensive grasp of fundamental calculus concepts.

Abstract

Assessment practices of special need students have been a concern in the educational system of most countries, especially in Nigeria. The aim of this study is to examine the assessment practice of special need students in special education Schools in Zamfara state, Nigeria. The Survey design was adopted for this study. The population of the study comprised all the 55 teachers (special educators) in the two (2) School for Special Education in Zamfara State, which include School for Special Education Gusau and School for Special Education Gummi. School for Special Education Gusau and School for Special Education Gummi have 37 and 18 teachers respectively. Purposive or judgmental sampling technique was used to select all the 55 teachers of special education schools in Zamfara state from whom, we could gain deep insights and understandings of assessment practices in special schools. The instrument used for data collection is a researcher designed questionnaire namely “Special Educators’ Assessment Practice Questionnaire (SEAPQ)”. The Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics of Weighted Mean and Standard Deviation. The results showed that the components of student assessment practice conducted among special need students are curriculum-based assessments, intelligence Quotient (IQ), Test screening test, academic achievements, developmental assessments and end-of-grade assessments, and the methods of assessment used are formative assessment, summative assessment, speech therapy evaluation/language scales, developmental scales, diagnostic assessment, standardized test and direct observation. The findings also revealed that special educators’ professional competence in choosing assessment methods appropriate for special need students, administering, scoring, and interpreting of their results and recognizing unethical and inappropriate assessment methods are inadequate. Based on these findings, it was recommended that Special educators should be train on all the components of assessments practices that will benefit special needs students learning outcomes.

Abstract

Background: Smoking is still a significant global public health concern, especially for young people who are more likely to start and maintain smoking habits that could result in long-term health problems.  The current study aims to measure smoking prevalence and attitudes among students and identify the associated factors of smoking. Methods: The quantitative method determined smoking prevalence, attitudes, and associated factors among students. A simple random sampling technique was used in the study area. 29 disciplines of the Khulna University campus were enrolled in this study. To observe the smoking initiation rates while studying at the university, first-year to master’s level students participated. Results: A total of 270 students were enrolled. Among them, almost 40.37% of respondents were non-smokers. To measure nicotine dependency, the Fagerstrom test was used. Compiled responses showed that the highest number of respondents, with a percentage of 24.07%, were found to have moderate nicotine dependence, with a score of 5-7. The second highest number of respondents (17.41%) was found to have low to moderate dependence on nicotine. The findings revealed that among the Knowledge and Attitude towards smoking, Students who oppose public smoking bans have a higher likelihood of nicotine dependence (AOR = 6.8, p < 0.001). The belief that smoking causes illness has no significant impact on nicotine dependence (AOR = 1.06, 95% CI: 0.47-2.40, p = 0.886) through a logistic regression model. Conclusion: Students older than 20 are more likely to smoke than those under 20. Family, social environment, and the smoking behavior of friends influence smoking. All risk factors, including history and university period, should be considered together in tobacco control.

Abstract

This study evaluates the Teachers Mate 1 (TM1) laptop initiative for pre-tertiary school teachers in Tamale Metropolis, Ghana, using the Consumer-Oriented Evaluation Model. The initiative aimed to enhance teaching and learning through laptop distribution. Guided by Scriven’s model, the study assessed the laptops’ effectiveness from the users’ perspective. A cross-sectional survey design was employed, with data collected from 260 teachers across eight senior high schools using structured questionnaires. The sample was determined using the Yamane formula, with proportional random sampling ensuring representation. Data analysis, conducted using SPSS (version 26), revealed that 56.5% of respondents felt the laptops were not worth their cost, and 47.3% expressed dissatisfaction due to quality and performance issues. Gender disparities emerged, with male teachers more likely to own additional laptops. Despite these concerns, 63.5% of respondents rated the initiative positively, indicating mixed perceptions. The study underscores the need for rigorous pre-implementation evaluations, incorporating user feedback and quality assurance measures. It recommends a structured stakeholder engagement process, including teachers, policymakers, and technology experts, to ensure future educational technology initiatives align with user needs and expectations.

Abstract

English grammar is a crucial and essential component in acquiring the English language. The acquisition of English grammar has emerged as a significant challenge for learners of all ages. This leads to the fact that identifying an effective approach to facilitate learners’ mastery of English grammar is material. Mind maps are deemed an appropriate option as they serve as a tool for articulating thoughts diversely, facilitating the effective utilization of both the left and right hemispheres of the brain to enhance activity and memory. As a result, mind maps have garnered heightened interest from educators. The study will examine the viewpoints of both instructors and students regarding the use of mind maps in the English grammar teaching and learning, grounded in the core aims and requirements of an innovative educational program. It is also designed to explore whether the implementation of mind maps in English grammar instruction can augment students’ engagement, promote learning efficacy, and foster learner autonomy, or if this approach constitutes an effective pedagogical method in teaching English grammar. To achieve the research goals, a quantitative method via a questionnaire is employed to assess stakeholders’ appraisal levels in educational activities. The findings indicate that both educators and learners greatly value the efficacy of utilizing mind maps in grammar instruction. Mind maps not only assist teachers in presenting lecture materials but also enable students to access and retain knowledge more effectively.

Abstract

With today's crisis of values, one of the main demands for ensuring democracy is the restoration of trust in people's relationships. It is considered more useful, however, to consolidate it from the first years of a person's life. It begs the question, therefore, how can trust be acquired at this stage of life. The arts, with their potential to increase the empathy of individuals, can be the basis for their development. By means of a quantitative methodological approach, the paper focuses on the art of theater and explores its role in education as an innovative pedagogical tool in building trust in primary education. The article examines the evolution of social relationships between children over time. While teachers cannot assess these relationships directly due to time constraints, these relationships do exist. Children have learned to accept the diversity of their classmates in the context of lessons, leading to shared experiences both inside and outside of school. Although not all social relations are successful, the educational process has contributed to the strengthening of respect for others between them which can positively affect the reduction of marginalization.

Abstract

This paper addresses an important issue regarding the introduction of Comprehensive sexuality education in the Zambian school curriculum and questioning whether such an introduction entailed the lack of comprehensive sexuality education content in the Zambian culture or not. Using selected pieces of music content, the Paper analyses how CSE is covered within the Zambian cultural curriculum and implores school authorities to tap from indigenous knowledge to feed the curriculum rather than bowing to foreign content. This paper adopted a qualitative approach.  Five purposively selected songs from four artists and five grade five and six learners’ books were subjected to content analysis to determine the adequacy of CSE content. The learners’ books were used to examine the availability of CSE content in the school system. Findings revealed that, although the selected songs did not address specific grade levels to benefit from CSE content, there was available content which when integrated in the Zambian school curriculum would adequately teach comprehensive sexuality education content and skills to learners in schools. Future CSE curriculum reviews should consider utilizing the Zambian music in the teaching of CSE in schools.
