Abstract

General background: Mastery of Arabic is fundamental in Islamic education as it enables students to understand primary Islamic sources such as the Qur’an and Hadith. Specific background: Many students in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) struggle to read Arab Gundul (Arabic script without diacritics), particularly due to difficulties in understanding nahwu and shorof. Knowledge gap: Although several teaching methods exist, limited studies have explored the effectiveness of the Nakhlah method—an innovative, song-based approach integrating Quantum Learning principles—on students’ reading competence. Aims: This study investigates the relationship between students’ responses to the Nakhlah method and their ability to read Arab Gundul in Tafsir Muyassar at Pondok Pesantren Tarbiyatul Iman Malang. Results: Using quantitative methods with Pearson correlation and simple linear regression on 17 students, findings reveal a significant relationship (p = 0.004 < 0.05) and a strong correlation (r = 0.655), with 42.9% of reading ability explained by the Nakhlah method. Novelty: This research presents empirical evidence of the pedagogical contribution of the Nakhlah method in improving Arabic literacy. Implications: The method can serve as an innovative alternative in Arabic language education within Islamic institutions. Highlights: Introduces the Nakhlah method as a song-based Arabic learning model. Demonstrates a strong correlation between method response and reading skill. Suggests innovation for improving Arabic instruction in pesantren. Keywords: Nakhlah Method, Arab Gundul, Arabic Literacy, Islamic Education, Quantum Learning

Abstract

General Background: Arabic learning among santri in Islamic boarding schools is often limited by difficulties in mastering mufradat (vocabulary), which affects their comprehension of classical Islamic texts. Specific Background: Pegon Arabic—Arabic script used for writing Javanese—has long been a linguistic bridge in traditional Islamic education, yet its pedagogical potential remains underexplored in modern learning contexts. Knowledge Gap: Few empirical studies examine how Pegon Arabic contributes to vocabulary mastery within contemporary pesantren environments. Aims: This study investigates the role of Pegon Arabic in improving mufradat mastery among santri at Al-Fattah Sidoarjo. Results: Findings indicate that the application of Pegon Arabic facilitates more effective vocabulary retention and contextual understanding, supported by the learners’ familiarity with the Javanese linguistic structure. Novelty: The study recontextualizes a traditional writing system as a modern pedagogical strategy, merging cultural heritage with language instruction. Implications: This approach offers an innovative pathway for Arabic educators to integrate local linguistic identities into curriculum design, enhancing linguistic accessibility and learning outcomes among santri. Highlights: Pegon Arabic strengthens contextual understanding of mufradat. Integrates cultural identity in Arabic language learning. Revitalizes traditional scripts for modern educational practice. Keywords: Pegon Arabic, Mufradat Mastery, Santri, Islamic Education, Vocabulary Learning

Abstract

General Background: Arabic is a fundamental language in Islamic scholarship and religious practice, serving as the linguistic medium of the Qur’an and classical Islamic sciences. Specific Background: However, the challenge of learning Arabic among non-native speakers, particularly in informal educational settings such as mosques, remains significant. Knowledge Gap: Few studies have investigated how structured Arabic learning using classical texts operates in community-based environments. Aims: This study explores the learning process, supporting and inhibiting factors of Arabic language instruction using Durusullughoh Al Arobiyyah Lighoiri Nathiqina Biha at the Assalam Puri Mas Mosque, Surabaya. Results: Findings reveal that the program follows a weekly schedule emphasizing practical exercises over theoretical content. Supporting factors include accessible learning materials, conducive facilities, and institutional support, while challenges stem from low learner motivation, scheduling constraints, and lack of formal commitment. Novelty: This research offers empirical evidence of mosque-based Arabic learning dynamics through Durusullughoh as an effective entry-level text for non-native learners. Implications: The study underscores the potential of integrating structured Arabic instruction within mosque environments to promote sustainable Islamic education beyond formal schooling. Highlights: Weekly mosque-based Arabic learning emphasizes practical use. Balanced view of supporting and inhibiting learning factors. Promotes mosque as a sustainable hub for Islamic language education. Keywords: Arabic Learning, Mosque Education, Durusullughoh, Islamic Pedagogy, Language Practice

Abstract

General Background: Mastery of Arabic vocabulary (mufradat) is fundamental in supporting students’ proficiency in understanding, speaking, and writing Arabic, especially within Islamic educational settings. Specific Background: However, conventional teaching methods often fail to engage students, resulting in low motivation and limited vocabulary retention. Knowledge Gap: Previous studies have explored card-based learning but have not integrated visual and linguistic elements simultaneously to improve Arabic vocabulary comprehension. Aims: This study aimed to investigate the use of Arabic Scrambled Card Games in improving vocabulary mastery among eighth-grade students at Al-Fattah Buduran Middle School. Results: Using a pretest-posttest one-group experimental design with 20 participants, the study found a significant mean score increase of 32.12 points (85.37%), confirming the medium’s effectiveness in fostering vocabulary retention and comprehension. Novelty: The innovation lies in adapting Sekata cards into Arabic Scrambled cards that merge Arabic letters and images to form meaningful learning interactions. Implications: This approach enhances students’ active engagement, cognitive retention, and enjoyment in Arabic language learning, making it an effective pedagogical tool for Islamic education. Highlights: Introduces Arabic Scrambled as a novel interactive learning medium. Demonstrates significant vocabulary improvement among middle school students. Promotes engaging, meaningful Arabic learning in Islamic education contexts. Keywords: Arabic Scrambled, Mufradat, Vocabulary Learning, Islamic Education, card Games

Abstract

General Background: Education plays a central role in shaping students’ character and moral responsibility, especially within Islamic-based schools. Specific Background: At SD Muhammadiyah 1 Waru Sidoarjo, Aqidah Akhlak teachers are expected not only to teach religious knowledge but also to cultivate responsibility in students’ learning behavior. Knowledge Gap: However, many students still demonstrate low responsibility, such as incomplete homework and lack of classroom discipline, indicating the need for deeper exploration of teacher strategies in this process. Aims: This study aims to analyze how Aqidah Akhlak teachers develop students’ learning responsibility through various pedagogical approaches. Results: Using a qualitative descriptive method, data from interviews, observations, and documentation reveal that teachers apply modeling, group discussions, and independent assignments effectively, resulting in noticeable improvement in students’ responsibility, discipline, and participation. Novelty: The study emphasizes the integrative application of religious values with character formation through active learning methods. Implications: The findings suggest that moral education embedded in Aqidah Akhlak subjects can strengthen students’ academic responsibility and personal ethics when consistently applied in the learning environment. Highlights: Aqidah Akhlak teachers act as moral role models in learning. Integrative methods effectively shape students’ responsibility. Religious-based character education supports academic discipline. Keywords: Aqidah Akhlak, Teacher Role, Learning Responsibility, Character Education, Elementary Students

Abstract

General Background: Structural femicide persists globally as a form of gender-based violence embedded within patriarchal sociocultural and religious systems. Specific Background: In Muslim-majority societies, distorted interpretations of Qur’anic teachings often legitimize violence against women, a dynamic vividly portrayed in the Malaysian series Bida’ah. Knowledge Gap: Existing studies rarely integrate Qur’anic thematic exegesis with media analysis to reveal how religious narratives are misused to reinforce systemic oppression. Aims: This study investigates the conceptual foundations of structural femicide, analyzes its narrative representation in Bida’ah, and reinterprets Qur’anic verses emphasizing justice and the sanctity of life. Results: Findings indicate that Bida’ah reflects multilayered violence—physical, symbolic, and institutional—sustained through patriarchal power and manipulated religious authority. The Qur’an, however, does not justify such violence; rather, it promotes protection, equality, and moral justice. Novelty: The study offers an integrated framework combining thematic Qur’anic interpretation and social hermeneutics with cinematic analysis to expose the ideological mechanisms underlying structural femicide. Implications: These insights highlight the urgency of contextual, justice-centered Qur’anic interpretation to dismantle patriarchal norms and to strengthen discourses countering gender-based violence. Highlights: Shows how distorted Qur’anic interpretations legitimize structural violence against women. Uses the Bida’ah series to illustrate multilayered femicide: physical, symbolic, and institutional. Emphasizes contextual, justice-oriented exegesis to dismantle patriarchal religious narratives. Keywords: Structural Femicide, Qur’anic Interpretation, Gender Based Violence, Patriarchal Power, Bida’ah Series

Abstract

General Background: Marriage in pre-Islamic Arab society functioned as a central social institution linking tribes and consolidating authority. Specific Background: Historical narratives document numerous unions between kings, tribal leaders, and prominent families aimed at securing loyalty and stabilizing political relations. Knowledge Gap: Despite scattered references in classical sources, systematic discussion of political marriage alliances as structured mechanisms of tribal governance remains limited. Aim: This study examines forms, objectives, and consequences of political intermarriages among Arab tribes before Islam. Results: The findings show that such marriages created durable kinship bonds, facilitated negotiation, reduced intertribal hostilities, strengthened leadership legitimacy, and occasionally failed, leading to renewed conflict. They functioned as strategic instruments for alliance-building, territorial security, and consolidation of power. Novelty: The study synthesizes dispersed historical accounts into a coherent analytical framework that positions marriage as a deliberate political strategy rather than merely a social custom. Implications: Understanding these alliances clarifies patterns of authority formation and conflict resolution in pre-Islamic Arabia and provides deeper insight into the socio-political foundations inherited by early Islamic society.Highlights: Marriage functioned as a political alliance mechanism. Kinship bonds structured tribal governance and authority. Alliances sometimes prevented conflict but could also fail. Abstract

General Background: Contemporary societies face rising religious tensions requiring solid theological foundations for peaceful coexistence. Specific Background: The Holy Qur’an articulates principles of tolerance, justice, moderation, freedom of belief, and respectful engagement with religious diversity, including dialogue with the People of the Book. Knowledge Gap: However, a concise and systematic formulation of these teachings as an integrated framework for present-day interfaith dialogue remains limited. Aims: This study examines Qur’anic verses and their contextual interpretations to construct a coherent model for rapprochement among religions. Results: Using a critical analytical literature review, the findings show that the Qur’an affirms rejection of coercion, recognition of plurality as divine wisdom, and cooperation based on shared human values. Novelty: The study synthesizes textual and contextual analysis into a structured Qur’anic framework applicable to contemporary plural societies. Implications: The results provide conceptual guidance for interfaith dialogue initiatives and educational programs fostering harmonious and inclusive communities. Highlights:• Establishes a Comprehensive Scriptural Model for Peaceful Coexistence Grounded in Divine Revelation.• Identifies Contextual Interpretation as Key to Overcoming Exclusivist Readings in Multi-Faith Settings.• Formulates Practical Guidance for Educational and Social Programs Promoting Mutual Understanding. Abstract

General Background: Informal education has long played a central role in transmitting religious values and character formation within Islamic communities. Specific Background: In Javanese society, the ngenger tradition—living with and serving a foster family—functions as experiential learning through daily interaction and role modeling. Knowledge Gap: However, its role in connecting traditional Islamic environments with Muhammadiyah’s modernist orientation remains underexplored. Aims: This study examines how the ngenger tradition operates as a medium of informal education and cultural adaptation in the transformation of religious orientation from traditional or abangan Islam toward Muhammadiyah in Tempurejo (Ngawi) and Grogol (Ponorogo). Results: Using a qualitative historical approach and Cultural Adaptation theory, the findings show that participants internalized Muhammadiyah values through everyday practices and later reproduced them through community religious activities, educational initiatives, and institutional development in Grogol. Novelty: The study reveals that ngenger functions as a culturally embedded mechanism linking experiential learning with ideological transformation. Implications: These findings demonstrate that local traditions can facilitate the integration of modern Islamic organizational values within rural communities through adaptive and minimally conflictive cultural processes. Highlights: Experiential learning through residential service relationships facilitated gradual internalization of Muhammadiyah religious and organizational values. Returning participants transmitted newly acquired religious practices and social norms through community religious gatherings and educational initiatives. Local institutional development—including mosques and schools—emerged from the value reproduction processes carried by former participants. Abstract

General Background: Islamic historiography in Indonesia has undergone significant transformation alongside the emergence of academically trained historians adopting critical and interdisciplinary approaches. Specific Background: One prominent contribution is Ahmad Syafii Maarif’s work Islam dan Politik: Teori Belah Bambu Masa Demokrasi Terpimpin (1959–1965), originally his master’s thesis, which examines Islamic political parties during the Guided Democracy era. Knowledge Gap: Despite its pioneering nature, limited scholarly reassessment has critically examined the scope, balance, and analytical depth of this work within modern Islamic historiography. Aims: This study aims to revisit Maarif’s work through literature review and descriptive analysis to evaluate its historiographical contribution and limitations. Results: The findings indicate that the work provides an early and significant analysis of Islamic political party activities during Guided Democracy, particularly highlighting the strategies of the NU Party, but it disproportionately emphasizes NU while underrepresenting other parties such as PSII and Perti. Novelty: This study offers a focused historiographical critique that situates Maarif’s work within the broader development of modern Islamic historiography in Indonesia. Implications: The study underscores the need for more balanced and comprehensive historiographical analyses of Islamic political movements, encouraging further critical engagement and methodological rigor in the study of Indonesian Islamic history. Highlights: Early scholarly examination of Muslim political organizations during 1959–1965 is identified. Disproportionate attention is given to Nahdlatul Ulama compared to other groups. Limited analytical coverage of PSII and Perti creates gaps in historical interpretation. Keywords: Historiography, Guided Democracy, Ahmad Syafii Maarif
