Abstract

Mindfulness or mindfulness is increasingly promoted in Western countries as a psychological strategy to improve emotional regulation and self-control, including in the context of reducing aggressive behavior, especially when individuals experience a state of exhaustion or ego depletion. However, the effectiveness of this approach in the context of non-Western cultures has not been widely explored. This study aims to replicate the study of Yusainy and Lawrence (2015) in Indonesia to test whether the induction of mindfulness can also moderate aggression after ego depletion in different cultural environments. This experimental research involved 119 Indonesian students as participants. Using a laboratory design, participants were divided into conditions of induction of mindfulness and control, and were asked to complete a reaction time competition task that had been modified to measure aggression (through the intensity of the sound explosions released against a fictitious opponent). In addition, an additional measure of the frequency of delayed maximum burst release was used to evaluate more subtle forms of aggression, particularly in female participants. The results showed that mindfulness significantly moderated the relationship between ego-depletion and aggression conditions, especially in low- to moderate-provoking situations. Mindfulness induction also showed improved self-control performance after participants completed aggression tasks. Another important finding is that the positive effect of mindfulness on aggression reduction is most visible in more subtle indicators of aggression, especially in groups of women who experience ego thinning. In conclusion, the results of this study reinforce the cross-cultural validity of the Western mindfulness approach and emphasize the importance of using more sensitive aggression measures, especially in assessing the effects of psychological interventions on female populations in non-Western cultures such as Indonesia.

Abstract

Urinary tract examination with the CT-Scan modality is considered superior to other imaging modalities because it produces better image resolution, clear anatomical details, and is able to accurately detect abnormalities. At the Radiology Installation of Brebes Hospital, the CT-Scan Urography examination is carried out without fasting requirements. Patients are only asked to remove metal objects from the abdominal area and hold urination before the examination begins. This aims to keep the urinary bladder (VU) fully filled so that it facilitates the evaluation of the anatomy of the urinary system, especially in detecting kidney stones which are the main complaints of patients. This study aims to find out in detail the procedure for CT-Scan Urography clinical urography of kidney stones, as well as the reasons why patients are asked to hold urination and are not asked to fast before the procedure is performed. The research method used is a mix method, which is a combination of qualitative and quantitative, with data collection through observation, interviews, and documentation. The research sample consisted of 3 patients who underwent CT-Scan Urography clinical examination of kidney stones at the Radiology Installation of Brebes Hospital. The results of the study showed that the procedure started from the patient's preparation, such as removing metal objects, drinking mineral water, and holding urination so that the VU was fully filled, thus helping the visualization of organs and urinary tract. This examination does not require fasting because the CT-Scan modality is able to provide a clear picture of the anatomy of the urinary tract without interference from the digestive system. These findings confirm that the CT-Scan Urography procedure at Brebes Hospital is simple, effective, practical, and provides optimal diagnostic results for patients.

Abstract

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation has been known to cause various adverse effects on the skin, including erythema (commonly referred to as sunburn), premature aging, and, with prolonged exposure, the risk of developing skin cancer. To counteract these harmful effects, sunscreen products are commonly used to protect the skin from UV radiation. The development of natural-based sunscreens is gaining attention due to their potential safety and antioxidant benefits. One promising natural ingredient is thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.), a medicinal herb that contains several secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, alkaloids, and tannins. These compounds possess antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties, making them suitable candidates as active ingredients in sunscreen formulations. This study aims to determine the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) value of thyme herb extract using the UV-Vis spectrophotometric method. A qualitative approach was used to assess the photoprotective potential of the extract. The SPF values were measured at three different concentrations of the extract: 0.5%, 0.75%, and 1.0%. The absorbance of each concentration was recorded at wavelengths ranging from 290 nm to 400 nm using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The SPF values were then calculated based on the absorbance data processed using Microsoft Excel. The results revealed that the thyme herb extract exhibited high SPF values at all tested concentrations. Specifically, the SPF values obtained were 36.027 for 0.5%, 36.244 for 0.75%, and 36.516 for 1.0% concentration. All three concentrations fall under the "ultra protection" category, indicating strong UV protective potential. These findings suggest that thyme herb extract can be effectively utilized as a natural active ingredient in the formulation of sunscreen products. Further studies are recommended to explore its stability, safety, and efficacy in topical applications.

Abstract

Performance is the result of the work of individuals in carrying out the responsibilities given, which is greatly influenced by the factors of ability, experience, seriousness, and punctuality. Data from Cut Nyak Dhien Hospital shows a decrease in the performance of non-medical employees recorded by the personnel department every year. In 2019, the average employee performance was 87.8; However, the figure decreased to 86.2 in 2020, 85.5 in 2021, 84.0 in 2022, and 83.9 in 2023. This decline is suspected to be caused by a less effective leadership style and weak implementation of organizational commitments. This study aims to analyze the influence of leadership style and organizational commitment on the performance of non-medical employees at Cut Nyak Dhien Langsa Hospital in 2024. The method used is a descriptive quantitative approach with a cross-sectional research design. The population studied was 35 non-medical employees, all of whom were sampled. Data were analyzed using univariate, bivariate, and multivariate tests. The results showed that the majority of respondents assessed the leadership style at the hospital as not good (57.1%), low organizational commitment (60.0%), and poor performance (57.1%). Statistical tests showed that there was a significant influence between leadership style (p=0.001) and organizational commitment (p=0.002) on the performance of non-medical employees. Based on these findings, it is recommended that Cut Nyak Dhien Langsa Hospital implement a more democratic leadership style to improve the performance of non-medical employees. Additionally, it is important to strengthen the implementation of the organization's commitments by providing ongoing training and development, as well as creating a work environment that supports employees' active participation in decision-making. The implementation of policies based on collaboration and good communication between management and employees is expected to be able to create a more productive and harmonious work atmosphere, which is important to achieve organizational goals effectively.

Abstract

Thalassemia is a genetic disorder characterized by impaired hemoglobin synthesis. This disease is caused by mutations in the globin gene, leading to disrupted production of globin chains. As a result, the red blood cells produced are dysfunctional and have a shorter lifespan, causing anemia. This condition requires proper medical management, including blood transfusions and other treatments. One way to detect and monitor the progression of thalassemia is by using biochemical markers that can identify changes in the patient’s body. Therefore, the aim of this systematic literature review is to identify biochemical markers that can be used for the diagnosis and monitoring of thalassemia. The literature used in this study includes articles on human thalassemia research published in the last 10 years. Literature searches were conducted in several academic databases using relevant keywords such as “biochemical markers for thalassemia,” “diagnosis of thalassemia,” and “thalassemia monitoring.” Based on the search results, several biochemical markers related to thalassemia were identified, including hepcidin, ferritin, and lipid profile. Ferritin plays a role in monitoring iron levels, which are often elevated in thalassemia patients, while hepcidin regulates iron homeostasis in the body. Additionally, other components involved in thalassemia diagnosis and monitoring include Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV), Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin (MCH), Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration (MCHC), and hemoglobin levels. The findings of this systematic literature review are expected to provide a comprehensive overview of biochemical markers that can be used in the diagnosis and monitoring of thalassemia. By identifying relevant markers, it is hoped that more accurate and effective diagnostic methods will be developed in the future, leading to better monitoring of thalassemia patients.

Abstract

The black sea cucumber (Holothuria atra) holds significant ecological and economic value in tropical marine ecosystems, including those of Maluku, Indonesia. This study aimed to estimate population density, spatial distribution patterns, and their relationship with environmental conditions along the Haenesai coast, Hulung Village, Taniwel District, West Seram Regency. Sampling was carried out using the belt transect method (50 m × 2 m) at three stations with three replications, while physicochemical parameters of seawater (temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, and transparency) were measured in situ. A total of 96 individuals of H. atra were recorded, with an average density of 10.6 ind/100 m². Station I exhibited the highest density (13 ind/100 m²), whereas Station II showed the lowest (9.3 ind/100 m²). Distribution patterns were generally uniform at Stations I and II, while Station III displayed a clustered pattern. These variations are likely influenced by differences in water transparency, dissolved oxygen, and substrate heterogeneity that affect food availability. Overall, environmental conditions remained suitable for H. atra, although evidence of exploitation pressure from local harvesting was observed. Ecologically, H. atra plays a critical role as a bioturbator, maintaining sediment quality and coastal ecosystem stability. This study highlights the need for regulated harvesting, habitat protection, and aquaculture development as strategic measures for the sustainable management of sea cucumber resources in Maluku.

Abstract

This study evaluated the population status of the conch Strombus luhuanus at Asol Beach, , Haruku Island, Maluku, through an analysis of density, size structure, length–weight relationship, and spatial distribution. Data were collected using transect–quadrat methods in the intertidal zone during low tide, complemented by measurements of environmental parameters (temperature, salinity, pH, and dissolved oxygen). The results revealed a population density of 2.76 ind/m², classified as moderate compared to other sites in Maluku. Shell length distribution encompassed nine size classes, with dominance in the mid-size class (3.93–4.38 cm), indicating successful recruitment of juveniles to early adults. The length–weight relationship followed the equation W = 1.871L0.0521 (R² = 0.857) with a negative allometric growth pattern, suggesting that individuals allocate more energy to shell elongation than body mass increase. The Morisita index (Id = 211.07) indicated an aggregated distribution pattern, consistent with reproductive strategies of broadcast-spawning gastropods. Environmental conditions (temperature 28.7 °C; salinity 32.66‰; pH 6.44; DO 6 mg/L) were within the tolerance range of tropical intertidal mollusks. These findings highlight the critical role of sandy seagrass habitats in supporting S. luhuanus populations and emphasize the need for management strategies based on minimum catch size, harvest regulation, and coastal habitat protection.

Abstract

Hypertension is a non-communicable disease that can be life-threatening, especially in the elderly. According to the WHO, more than 15 million people aged 30–69 years die each year from non-communicable diseases. This study aims to analyze factors influencing the incidence of hypertension in the elderly, including smoking, stress levels, culture, diet, exercise, and coffee drinking habits. This research method used a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. The population was 738 elderly people, with a sample size of 259 elderly people, and random sampling was used. Data analysis was performed using univariate, bivariate using the Chi-Square test, and multivariate using the Pearson correlation test. The results of this study such as Smoking with hypertension: There is a significant influence (p = 0.002), stress level There is a significant influence (p = 0.002), Culture There is a significant influence (p = 0.010), Eating patterns with hypertension are significant (p = 0.049), Exercise There is a significant influence (p = 0.003), drinking coffee with a significant influence (p = 0.048). Multivariate analysis shows that culture (p = 0.003; r = 0.177) and coffee drinking habits (p = 0.022; r = 0.139) are the most influential factors on elderly hypertension, while other factors are not significant. This study shows that smoking, stress levels, culture, diet, exercise, and coffee consumption are significantly associated with hypertension in the elderly. However, a multivariate analysis revealed that cultural factors and coffee drinking habits were the most dominant factors influencing hypertension, while other factors had no significant effect after being controlled for. Therefore, efforts to prevent and control hypertension in the elderly need to focus on changing cultural practices that are less conducive to health and regulating coffee consumption, while still considering the implementation of a healthy lifestyle overall.

Abstract

Hand measurements are known to provide a good estimate of a person's height, which is particularly useful in the process of identifying human remains that are dismembered or separated due to various circumstances. Such conditions often occur during mass disasters, murders, airplane crashes, train collisions, and highway accidents. In forensic anthropology, hand length is one of the body measurements that can help estimate height when complete body parts are not available. This study aims to examine the relationship between hand length and height specifically in individuals from the Jambi Malay tribe, one of the ethnic groups in Indonesia. The research design used is analytic with a cross-sectional approach. The type of data used is primary data, obtained directly from 56 respondents belonging to the Jambi Malay tribe, both male and female. Statistical analysis showed that all independent variables — the length of the right and left hands, both in men and women, as well as without gender distinction — had a significant relationship with height. This is indicated by a P-value < 0.05 (P = 0.001). These results suggest that hand length can be a reliable predictor of height in this ethnic group. The study also highlights the importance of conducting further research involving other body parts and ethnic groups to support broader forensic identification efforts.
