Abstract

The first education themed Indonesian movie during Indonesian film industry history is exposed in, Denias, Senandung di Atas Awan. This film presents a struggle of a boy, Denias,  in pursuing his dream to achieve a better education and through this movie he is also recognized as a hero. Moreover, in order to help my pursuit in answering my statement of the problem, I applied Christopher Vogler’s theory which is the Character Arc. Thus, in the end of this study, I can conclude that a common boy can also be recognized as a hero because  he has a great effort. This effort can be seen through his (Denias’) inner journey that leads him to be an educated person.

Abstract

This study compares the girl power characteristics such as bravery, independence, and intelligence in identifying Rapunzel as the earlier princess character and Moana as the recent princess character of the third generation of Disney Princesses in the two Disney Princess Animated Films titled Tangled and Moana. As a result of this study, I found that in terms of bravery, Moana as the recent princess, is more daring to make decisions and take risks when compared to Rapunzel as the earlier princess of the third generation. In terms of independence, it can also be seen that Rapunzel still seems to rely more on other people to help her find a way and protect herself, in contrast to Moana, who can find the destination by herself and work together with other people and make them become her partners. In terms of intelligence, both Rapunzel and Moana are good at managing their daily activities, but in terms of solving problems, Rapunzel still uses the power of magical stuff, unlike Moana, who uses all her mind and strength to solve the problems she faces. Keywords: girl power, bravery, independence, intelligence, characteristics

Abstract

This study observed the apology strategies used by five customer service officers of Mandiri Bank and five customer service officers of Mega Bank in Surabaya. The data were analyzed using the theory of apology strategies proposed by Trosborg (1995). The findings show that both the customer service officers of Mandiri and Mega Bank mostly used Checking strategy when handling the complaints. Overall, it was found that all customer service officers used seven types of apology strategies and they did not use sixteen apology strategies. This happened probably probably because they had tendency to use strategies commonly used among Indonesians and probably because they were not trained to use other strategies.

Abstract

This study is about the teacher’s interactional modifications in teaching the intermediate students in an English Course in Surabaya. The three objectives of this study are to find out the types of the teacher’s interactional modifications, the students’ responses toward the teacher’s interactional modifications, and the contribution of the interactional modifications for the students’ learning. The subject of the data is an English teacher and fourteen students.  Moreover, the theory applied was a theory of the interactional modifications from William, Inscoe, and Tasker (2014). The findings revealed that the teacher used five types of interactional modifications namely confirmation check, clarification request, comprehension check, repetition, and reformulation. While for the students’ responses, it showed that the students gave correct responses, incorrect responses, and no responses. Furthermore, it also revealed that interactional modifications gave four contributions; making the meaning more comprehensible for the learners, improving the learners’ language, minimizing the misunderstanding between the teacher and the learners, and ensuring that the learners were following. Finally, the writer concluded that the interactional modifications help the learners to learning the language

Abstract

This research deals with multimodality or multimodal discourse analysis in analyzing the notion of beauty in a Youtube video. It aims at finding how an advertisement uses the multiple modes in constructing the meaning, which is the notion of beauty. For this research, the object of the analysis is Dove’s video advertisement entitled “Dove Real Beauty Sketches”, which was uploaded to the YouTube channel of Dove in 2013. The issue that Dove is trying to convey through the advertisement is that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. One’s perception of beauty can differ from another. If one person describe himself/herself as unattractive, other people may think that the person is actually attractive. Through this research, I want to find how that issue is constructed through the analysis of the multiple modes used in the advertisement. The multiple modes consist of the verbal and non-verbal expressions displayed by the female participants, Olivia, Melinda, Kela, and Florence. Keywords: advertisement, beauty, notion, multimodal discourse analysis

Abstract

Established in April 2020 by Budi Santosa, KRN.BGT is a fashion brand from Jogja Painting that produces artistic masks by collaborating with other local artists. KRN.BGT is targeting people aged 20s-30s who like visual arts. Although it has a well-designed Instagram account, they still receive many questions from their customers and potential customers regarding their products through Instagram direct messages and comments. Therefore, I decided to improve KRN.BGT’s product knowledge by creating a list of FAQs of its products on its Instagram Stories Highlights, compiled from the direct messages and comments by applying the theories of good FAQs by Biroscak (2019) and color contrast from Alscher (2019) and Evans (2019). I found three USPs from my observation and survey, namely adjustable, suitable for adults and children, and customizable; and include them into the list of FAQs, so its existing and potential customers know more about its products. Keywords: product knowledge, FAQ, Instagram, Instagram Stories Highlights

Abstract

In the marketing world, there are a lot of competitors who compete their business to become the number one. Thus, some companies want to make their product exist in the customer's mind by making a video advertisement which usually appears on television or social media platforms. By making video as the instrument of advertisement, usually some companies can share a particular message about their brand or product to their customer. The message is used to persuade the people who see the advertisement to buy their product. Commonly, the video advertisement contains elements of semiotic resources such as visual, audio, oral, spatial, linguistic, and gesture. Those elements help the audience to understand particular messages. In this thesis, the researcher aims to reflect the message of fun traveling moment in Traveloka video advertisements by looking at the elements of semiotic resources which are divided into two parts, they are verbal and non-verbal expression and find out the brand image of Traveloka video advertisement by looking at interrelatedness of the some semiotic resources. The researcher used two videos of Traveloka advertisements as the object of analysis, then the writer found out the verbal and non-verbal expressions which convey the message using the theories of Multimodal discourse and the writer interpreted the message using a descriptive qualitative research method. According to the researcher's analysis, she finds that both two videos of Traveloka advertisements reflect fun traveling moments which can be seen through the combination of some semiotic resources and find two brand images of Traveloka such as having quality time and seeking meaning of life. Keywords: Advertisement, Verbal, Non Verbal, Semiotic, Traveloka, Multimodal
