Abstract

In this study, the reading strategies used by students of high and intermediate reading proficiency levels were qualitatively examined. Reading strategies are important factors that affect someone's reading proficiency. In the development of education, reading strategies are continuously carried out to facilitate the learning process and sharpen students' reading skills. The purpose of this study is to discover the reading strategies used by the English Department students with high and intermediate reading proficiency levels in reading academic texts. This study uses reading strategies theory by Grabe (2009) combined with the interview questions by Mokhtari and Reichard (2002) to examine the reading strategies of ten participants consisting of five people with high reading proficiency level and five other people with intermediate reading proficiency level. This study showed that students of high reading proficiency levels tend to use more reading strategies than students with intermediate reading proficiency level. The biggest difference is in the use of text-structure awareness and inferencing strategies. It indicates that the mastery of text structure is directly related to reading effectiveness. Without text structure awareness, other reading strategies such as summarizing, inferencing, and elaborative interrogation will be seriously disrupted. Keywords:  Reading Strategies, Academic Text, High Reading Proficiency Level, Intermediate Reading Proficiency Level

Abstract

Self-actualisation is an interesting topic to be talked about in Indonesia, as Indonesian families still uphold filial piety very highly. Thus, the concept of putting forwards one’s dreams and wishes for one’s own future and brushing aside one’s parents’ wants and plans is mostly unheard of. I made this creative work, in form of a novel, to highlight this highly-relevant phenomena and initiate the talk between parents and their descendants. This story is written from the perspective of the son of a family who wants to be an artist, but faces hurdles in the form of his chasing tiger mother and how that affected him and his decision-making in relation of becoming the best version of himself. Keywords: Artistry, Chinese-Indonesian, Filial piety, Poetry, Realistic fiction, Self-actualisation.

Abstract

This Business Communication Final Project (BCFP) is made for English for Business Communication (EBC), a new program of the English Department in Petra Christian University. The background of the study is that only few people know about what EBC is because of EBC’s study focus misunderstanding. Thus, EBC needs a company profile booklet, which functions as not only a resume, but also a marketing tool for EBC, to promote its unique strengths as a new program and attract more potential customers, especially high school students and their parents. The company profile booklet outlines EBC history (“EBC-ED”), general overview (“What is EBC?”), product and service description, successes and milestones (“Why EBC?”), alumni and student testimonials (“What Do Our Alumni and Students Say?), and contact information (“How to Reach Us?”). It is expected that this company profile can benefit EBC in its future growth and development.

Abstract

The fear of death has long plagued people for its unknown implications and the burden of grief that comes with it; however, it is not something that people often acknowledge. This work intends to highlight that fear-related issues should not be understated as trivial negative emotions and need more awareness. Using the death anxiety and protection motivation theories, I discovered that there are hidden conflicts behind death anxiety that people need to address to minimize their symptoms and eventually undergo a successful coping process. The story follows the struggle of Sasha, who initially rejects her beloved Kaiser’s death by creating alternate universes to save him but then slowly realizes that her interferences are harmful. In the end, she finally accepts his death and moves on. Through that angle, this work aims to motivate people that while death happens inevitably, they can always handle their fear through a more positive mindset. Keywords: death anxiety, codependency, coping, science fiction, dark fantasy, alternate universes

Abstract

This study focused on the gendered speech styles namely; male speech styles and female speech styles used by Erin Gruwell in the Freedom Writers movie and the changes that can be perceived from her use of gendered speech styles. Based on the writer’s descriptive qualitative approach analysis on the data, she found out that the teacher uses both male speech styles and female speech styles along 15 class scenes. She used Co-operative feature of female speech styles and Aggressive feature of male speech styles as her dominant feature which were used in each class scene. However, the writer could not find any gradual changes from the teacher’s use of speech styles. Therefore, the teacher’s changes in using speech styles did not seem to correlate with the students’ changes in the attitude towards the teacher.

Abstract

This thesis is created with the purpose to explore the destructive nature of obsessive love from its reasonings, symptoms, and how it affects people around the perpetrator. While love is a widely-known emotion that has been a norm for everyone, many still do not know the dark side of too much love, which can be the result of mental illnesses such as obsessive love disorder and many more. Obsessive love disorder itself is a mental disorder where someone has an overwhelming obsessive desire to possess and protect another person. Using screenplay as the form and drama-thriller as its genre, I will show the development and symptoms of obsessive love disorder through Sinclair as the main character. She will also show how she manipulates people around her to fulfill her love obsession. In the screenplay, Sinclair will manipulate Charlot’s love for her by using him to get the man she obsessively loves.

Abstract

In Indonesia, mental illnesses, or more specifically, depression, is still seen as a moral failure, a failure to conform in society due to a faulty moral upbringing. However, little spotlight is given towards the immediate family of a sufferer, how a sufferer places burdens on their family in terms of economy, psychology, and social life, in addition to the burden of sympathy as the result of having to put the needs of someone else above onself. To depict such suffering and help make it more visible, I created a story, written from the perspective of someone close to a sufferer, to show how the immediate family also suffers from the negative stigma attached to a sufferer. Keywords: sufferer, burden of sympathy, depression.
