Abstract

This study is about the choice of codes used by the employees in communicating with their superior and their co-worker. The thing that has caught the writer’s attention and curiosity to write on this particular topic is the language that is used by the employees in a work place like switching when they talk to the superior and the co-worker. The aims of this study were to describe and to analyze the codes which were used by the employees, to find out the dominant code they chose, and to explain what factors affected their choice of code. Through the analysis, the writer found that the employees chose to use standard or casual Indonesian codes in communicating with their superior. Whereas they used Javanese codes in communicating among themselves.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the classification of Jaegu Song’s borderline personality disorder in the webtoon Girls of the Wild’s. This thesis will use borderline personality disorder theory to analyze Jaegu Song’s behavior and the change in his personality by looking at his actions, dialogues, monologues, and flashbacks. This study analyzes what mental illness Jaegu Song suffered from by finding the symptoms, causes, and effects according to borderline personality disorder theory. It shows that in the webtoon Girls of the Wild’s, Jaegu Song suffered from Borderline Personality Disorder. It can be found that someone might have developed a specific mental illness, even when they appeared to be alright or showed a relatively normal behavior, and sometimes there must be some reasoning on why someone might be seen as problematic or seen as a bad person.

Abstract

This study focuses on the four tales that are taken from The Arabian Nights, namely The Tale of King Shahryār and His Brother, The Tale of the Porter and The Three Young Girls of Baghdad, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, and Ali Shar and Zumurrud. The goal is to find the forms of patriarchal power as the causes of the women characters’ negotiation of power and also the forms of the women characters’ negotiation of power in The Arabian Nights. The theories that are used for this study are the theory of power relation, the concept of docile bodies, and the concept of negotiation of power/power strategies. From the analysis, it is found that in the patriarchal society of The Arabian Nights, power is fluid and not fixed. Thus, in the society of The Arabian Nights, the women can still show reactions against men’s exercise of patriarchal power. Key words: Power, Negotiation, Women, Patriarchy, Resistance, Rebellion.

Abstract

This study is aimed to reveal the type of apology strategies used by the workers to the old and young bosses. There were five workers and two bosses, old and young bosses, taken for the subjects. Finally, the research came up with the result that the way of the workers apologizing might influenced by the age of the bosses as interlocutor which made the workers produce apology utterances in different ways of apology to the old and young bosses.

Abstract

Fave Hotel Rungkut is a 3 – star hotel, located in Jl. Kaliraya Rungkut No. 23 – 25. Fave Hotel Rungkut has 175 total rooms with 169 standar rooms and 6 suite rooms. They also offer 4 medium and 2 large meeting rooms.  Their main competitors are Cleo Business Hotel, Zest Hotel Jemursari, and Amaris Magarejo. The main problem that Fave Hotel Rungkut is facing is the decline of upselling rooms and meeting rooms in September – November 2018. To solve the problem, I made a marketing booklet to help sales team sell the products of Fave Hotel Rungkut. A marketing booklet is made in English and Indonesia in order to make their local and foreign customers understand. This marketing booklet will be useful and helpful for sales and marketing team to promote or show their products to their target market. Keywords: Promotion, Hotel, Marketing Booklet

Abstract

This thesis focused on studying the subtitles of idioms found in the movie, Inside Out (2015), specifically the idioms uttered by Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust. The writer used the following theories by Newmark (2001) to analyze the data—Translation Procedures to sort out the translations, and Translation Criticisms to evaluate the appropriateness of the translations. Through this study, the writer aimed to find the most frequently used translation procedure for idioms in Inside Out, and the appropriateness of its translations. After analyzing the data, the writer concluded Functional Equivalent as the most frequently used translation procedures for idioms found in Inside Out by producing 23 out of 39 translations. Functional Equivalent also produced mainly appropriate translations with 20 translations being appropriate. In conclusion, Functional Equivalent is the most recommended procedure to translate idioms, because it produces referentially and pragmatically accurate, semantically adequate, and natural translations. Key words: Translation, Subtitles, Idioms, Translation Procedures

Abstract

This study focused on the use of apology strategies used by female and male front officers to reveal the types of apology strategies used and to reveal the similarities and differences between female and male front officers’ way of apologizing in handling customer complaints. The types of apology strategies showed that both female and male front officers combined all three apology strategies which are IFIDs, Account and Positive Politeness Apology Strategies. Besides, the order of their use of apology strategies were also varied. However, the female front officers had more Positive politeness apology strategies when responding to complaints with attacks and the male front officer did not use Account strategy when handling customer complaints without attacks. Finally, it can be concluded that types of complaint play a more important role than gender factor in the use of apology strategies by these female and male front officers.

Abstract

This creative work is in five children’s picture book format for the target of age five to nine and the topic focuses on children’s anxiety. My stories will be in low fantasy genre, where the anxiety in each story has various forms. The main theme of my stories is to show that what anxiety produces negative thoughts that are not based on reality. To show how children can have anxiety, I use Cognitive Distortions theory, and to show how children can cope with their anxieties, I use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) theory. Each of my stories will be about how anxiety happens to the main character and how the main character solves the problem. From the research I did, I found that anxiety happens to children and it produces negative thoughts that are later proven to be untrue. With CBT, children can also learn how to cope their anxieties by self-monitoring their own emotions and turn negative thoughts into positive ones. Keywords: Children, anxiety, cognitive distortions, cognitive behavioural therapy

Abstract

The purpose of this present study is to identify the extent to which the ESP textbooks Bahasa Inggris Maritim dan Perikanan Paket Keahlian: Teknika Kapal Penangkapan Ikan Kelas X Semester I(BIMP I)and Bahasa Inggris Maritim dan Perikanan Paket Keahlian: Teknika Kapal Penangkapan Ikan Kelas X Semester II (BIMP II) comply with the criterions of ESP textbooks evaluation checklist proposed by Cunningsworth (1995), namely the7th, 8th, 9th, and 11thcriterions of the checklist.  This study is a qualitative research in which the writer read both ESP textbooks BIMP I and BIMP II and used content analysis to analyze the textbooks. Through the evaluation of both the ESP textbooks BIMP Iand BIMP II, the writer discovered that out of the four criterions used, the ESP textbooks partially met the ninth and eleventh criteria which are; the usability of the ESP textbooks for individual study, and the availability of outcomes of learning activities relevant to student’s future professions/ occupations. This present study would hopefully make several noteworthy contributions to the quality improvement of both BIMP Iand BIMP II textbooks.

Abstract

This article aims to discuss Emily Gold’s Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, how it affects her way of viewing expectations coming from people around her, and the effects of the failure in fulfilling the expectations.  It is found that Emily’s conditions as a PTSD sufferer makes her to perceive the expectations as rules to be obeyed and also as her redemption. When she fails to fulfill the expectations, she uses self-injury as her way of shouting out the pain and to punish herself. Later, when self-injury fails to accommodate her pain and anxiety, she decides to commit suicide to end her sufferings. In conclusion, Emily’s traumatic experience, and later her mental condition as a PTSD sufferer give a tremendous impact towards her way of perceiving expectations coming from people around her.
