Abstract

This study was done to find out the teachers` opinions regarding the coursebook, When English Rings A Bell (revised edition), in terms of (1) the coursebook`s language content, (2) the presentation of English skills in the coursebook, and (3) the coursebook`s topic, subject content, and social values. The data of this study was the teachers` written and/or oral answers of the questions used as the evaluation guidelines as proposed by Cunningsworth (1995). The teachers stated that (a) the topics, (b) subjects content, and (c) social and cultural values presented in the coursebook were appropriate to the Indonesian people`s way of life by not differentiating in gender. In addition, although the book provided practices for all English skills, the book should include additional material to support them, for instance, recorded material on a cassette for listening practices. The book did not also include all language contents as proposed by Cuningsworth (1995).

Abstract

This study exploring three BL Webtoons is for taking a closer look on how the characteristics of heterosexuality can be found in BL Webtoons. To achieve that purpose, the theories used cover the set formula of male and female illustrations and gender roles. The first analysis is about the physical appearance by going into details of the physical build, facial features, and biology of the masculine and feminine males. The second one is the actions to see the feminine and masculine characters’ different ways of acting and thinking. The result of the analysis reveals how feminine males in these three BL Webtoons are depicted the same way as females are. The fact that gender identity and gender roles that describe heterosexuality are present,  shows that these three BL Webtoons  are narrated in the framework of heterosexuality. So, heteronormativity, the view that heterosexuality is the default, succeeds in infiltrating BL Webtoons. Keywords: BL Webtoon, heteronormativity, gender roles, homosexuality

Abstract

This qualitative study aims to find out the affective strategies used by high proficiency learners at Hand Fortuna Center, Kupang. The theory applied was the theory of Affective Strategies by Oxford (1990) as a main theory and Oxford (2011) as a supporting theory. The source of data was the result of the questionnaires and the transcripts of interview that have been conducted with the ten high proficiency students at Hand Fortuna Center. The findings showed that the learners mostly used the first and the second part of affective strategies, namely “lowering your anxiety” and “encouraging yourself”. There are three sub-strategies in each part such as using “progressive relaxation, deep breathing, or meditation”, “using music”, and “using laughter” (lowering your anxiety) and “making positive statements”, “taking risks wisely”, and “rewarding yourself” (encouraging yourself). The third part of affective strategies, “taking your emotional temperature”, was the least frequently used by the learners. It is possible that the learners might not be familiar with the strategies such as “using a checklist” or “writing a language learning diary”.

Abstract

Recent world crises have caused millions to relocate. However, upon reaching their destination, immigrants often suffer from mental health problems. This work addresses how an immigrant status increases one’s likelihood to develop the early symptoms of schizophrenia and how to recover. It does so by using Blair Wheaton’s theory of the sociogenesis of psychological disorder and a phenomenological and participatory research written by Larry Davidson and his colleagues. It warrants a publication of the phenomenon in a creative form. This novella explores the perspective of Lukas Bertram, a wanted politician who left Earth for the planet of Morael, where he would try to survive amidst discrimination, give up, succumb to schizophrenia, and eventually recover. According to the findings, Lukas’ fatalism became the mediating variable between low socioeconomic status and his initial development of schizophrenia. Overcoming fatalism by reestablishing social connection and sense of control, thus, sparked his recovery process.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the representation of male and female characters’ qualities that are portrayed in  Zootopia. The research also aims to show how the qualities are deconstructed as well as how to deconstruct the deconstruction in the movie as a method of analysis. Through the analysis the writer finds that the representation of qualities in Zootopia follows the traditional gender stereotypes, where men are considered superior than women. However, as the story progresses, the writer finds that the qualities in the movie are gradually deconstructed, showing that women are superior than men. After deconstructing the deconstruction in the movie, the writer finds that meaning can “disseminate” or can be perceived in different ways. Furthermore, from the analysis, the writer finds that both oppositions are actually interdependent to each other and complement as a whole. This means neither of the oppositions is stronger or weaker than the other. Keywords: Gender roles, Masculine and Feminine Gender Stereotypes, Deconstruction, Binary Opposition, Violent Hierarchy

Abstract

This study examines the interactional styles related to the role of chairperson used by two female and two male chairpersons in the SEB-PCU meetings. There are three main theories used: interactional styles, gender, and chairpersons and their roles in a meeting. The method used is qualitative approach focusing on the process and the data. The findings reveal that both feminine and masculine interactional styles were used by the chairpersons. The masculine interactional styles were employed to play the roles of chairpersons. The use of interactional styles between female and male chairpersons differs in its ratio although the same linguistic clue was used for the same device. Here, conciliatory feature was not produced by the male chairpersons whereas referentially oriented feature was produced frequently by chairpersons. Overall, it proves that females use more feminine interactional styles while males use more masculine interactional styles. Thus, gender and power play an important role in meeting.

Abstract

The purpose of making this Business Communication Final Project was to solve Sinar Terang’s problems. The problem was related to its products’ existence. Only few existing customers of Sinar Terang knew that Sinar Terang has its own bags. For that reason, it was difficult for Sinar Terang to sell its bags more. Therefore, the problem was how to make Sinar Terang’s existing customers know its bags without coming to the store and how to make Sinar Terang’s bags more popular. The solution to these problems was making a bilingual commercial website which consists of “Updates” part, “About Us” part, “Our Collections” part, “Made to Order” part, “Our Customers” part, and “Contact Us” part. This website would indeed solve Sinar Terang’s problem because for the existing customers, they could see Sinar Terang’s bags including the information without coming to the store. Also, Sinar Terang could attract new customers through this website.

Abstract

In this article, I want to analyze a movie entitled Fight Club by David Fincher. It is one of Film Noir movies that is adapted from Chuck Palahniuk’s novel. Film Noir usually employs mentally unstable characters. In this movie, Jack, the main character, has psychological problems which causes his anxieties. Thus, I want to find out the types of Jack’s anxiety and the defense mechanism he uses to cope with it. I will identify the types of Jack’s anxieties and the defense mechanisms he uses. His anxieties have led him to have insomnia, depression, and the formation of his alter ego Tyler Durden. They also cause his problematic behavior that results in the destruction of his life. In order to cope with his psychological problem, Jack uses several defense mechanisms. In my analysis, I use theory of anxieties and defense mechanisms by Sigmund Freud. Based on the analysis, I find that Jack has reality anxiety, neurotic anxiety, and moral anxiety. To cope with anxieties, he uses defense mechanisms such as repression, fixation, and regression. His anxieties and unhealthy defense mechanisms are what have driven him to have problematic behavior.  Keywords: anxiety, defense mechanism, neurotic anxiety, reality anxiety, moral anxiety
