Abstract

With the ideology of patriarchy that is still rooted in Korean society, this thesis analyzes the phenomenon of older women and younger men from three different Korean dramas whose characterizations are different from the usual patriarchal system. This thesis aims at revealing how the characteristics that the characters possess are able to make them interested in their relevant partners. The thesis finds out that the younger men do possess different traits from their gender stereotypes but at the same time, they also still maintain the masculinity trait¾they are supportive, obedient and protective. Meanwhile, the older women’s main attraction is that they still act as the nurturers, regardless of their less submissiveness in the relationship. Thus, these characteristics unite and they are still able to make each of them attracted to their partners. Nevertheless, it can be concluded that the differences here are possible because the characters do not particularly believe in and follow the traditional patriarchal system anymore.

Abstract

Nationalism is a central part of Indonesian ideology, but few Indonesians recognise or acknowledge its more negative elements out of denial. As such, the nation rarely addresses the numerous human right violations committed in the past for the sake of upholding this ideology. In response to this issue, I wrote this novel to show the detrimental effects of denial have on people, as well as the way to cope with it. This creative work takes on the perspective of a soldier in the New Order era, who in the effort to find his missing brother, encounters the harsh reality in Buru island that forces him to reconsider his naïve understanding of nationalism. Keywords: Denial, Nationalism, Nation, Indonesia, Buru, Historical Fiction, History, Novel

Abstract

This study aims to find out the women’s and men’s language features used by Jeffree Star in his monologue entitled Full Face of Brands That Hate Me. The theoretical framework was based on Lakoff (2004) and Coates (2004) theories of language features. This study employed a qualitative approach. I found that Jeffree Star used color terms, adjectives, hedges, intonations, grammar, politeness, swear words, commands and directives, and questions. Jeffree Star also used two language features at the same time namely color terms and hedges, grammar and questions, swear words and hedges, and swear words and politeness. The use of language features by Jeffree Star was influenced by the topic of the talk and the gender identity. Further studies involving more subjects, objects, or other socio variables are needed to achieve a better understanding of the use of women’s and men’s language features. Keywords: language features, monologue, beauty vlogger

Abstract

In the high school where this research was done, the biggest problem for the students, when it comes to English tests, is the reading section. Because they do not like reading, their reading scores are low. Reflecting to this fact, the idea of learning styles was applied in the reading class to help the students like reading so that they understand the text better. This research used mainly the idea of Visual Auditory and Kinesthetic learning styles suggested by Neil Fleming in 1992. The research was done in a class of forty students with different levels of English proficiency. There were three sessions in which each session had different learning styles applied to the activities. The result of this research was as expected with some exceptions. Both the ones who have high and low level of English understand the reading texts better when the learning styles applied match with theirs. However, there were also special cases in which students got their highest scores in the sessions that did not match with their personal learning styles. One of the possibilities on why these special cases occurred is the possible existence of the secondary learning styles. Neil Fleming mentioned in one of his journals that it is possible for these learning styles to overlap - one person can have more than one learning style with one style as the dominant learning style

Abstract

This article explores the causes and effects of inferiority complex in a character of a manga created by Hiromu Arakawa, Fullmetal Alchemist. Commonly seen as a child’s play and underestimated by the society of literature, comic book or manga actually has the same quality as those considered as literary arts and stands equally with them. It embraces issues freely without the restriction of social rules and individual or group and uncontaminated by social, personal, or political influences. One of the issues most people think will not be in a comic book is psychology. Started from comparing himself to humans, the main antagonist, Homunculus, suffers from an inferiority complex caused by several factors such as parental attitude, physical defects, and envy. Furthermore, as the effect of suffering inferiority complex, Homunculus develops psychological defenses to ease his inferiorities: compensation and superiority complex. He tries to compensate his inferior feelings by excelling in another area and covers up the inferiorities by striving for superiority and omnipotence.

Abstract

Dauni Spa, the company where I did my internship, provides spa treatment, sauna, and salon service. During my internship at Dauni Spa, I found there are various practices of massage techniques performed by the therapists that lead to inconsistency in the service qualities. This problem certainly resulted in unsatisfactory treatment because the customers would not be satisfied to receive inconsistent service quality. Aside from this problem, many newly-recruited therapists did not know the standard procedures of massage in Dauni Spa while they needed to start working very soon. Therefore, I intend to make a standard operating procedure (SOP) video as a solution to the problems. For the newly recruited therapists, the SOP video can give effective and efficient instructions of the standard procedures in Dauni Spa. For the old therapists, this video works as a standard service quality that should be put into practice by all therapists. The basic content of this video is the procedures of the massage and a little background information about Dauni Spa. From this video, there are some benefits that Dauni Spa can get. It can complete the written SOP that they have, cut down the cost of a trainer, and bring a good impact to the customers’ satisfaction.

Abstract

This study attempts to show the forms of power exercised by a government and the resistance by the powerless in Isle of Dogs. In this study, I focus on power relations between the government led by Mayor Kobayashi and the powerless party which are the people and dogs. I address two problems which are the way the government exercises power and the way the powerless resists it.  I use Foucauldian power relations and the concept of propaganda by Michel Sproule to help me analyze the problems.  From the analysis, I find that power is exercised by the subjects who are able to manipulate others from their strategic position. I also found that power is fluid, and it transforms as it faces struggle and resistance. Finally, I find that in the field of power relations in a democratic society, people have a big role in determining the form and strength of the power that circulates in that society. Keywords: Power, Resistance, Strategy, Democracy, Obedience.
