Abstract

Gadis is the oldest girl’s magazine in Indonesia. In 2020, Gadis published its annual edition with its trademark theme that is Fashion and Beauty. As part of the media, Gadis must select certain pictures to be published in the magazine, thus the pictures are the ideal portrayal of girls. I used Semiotics theory by Roland Barthes to know the girls’ ideal image and how Gadis constructed it. I found out that confidence, friendliness, and playfulness are three ideal images in the fashion rubric of Gadis 2020 Annual Edition. The finding of my analysis is that: girls’ ideal image that Gadis represents is influenced by the characteristics of generation Z who are the target market of Gadis, as well as Indonesian culture that is being friendly. Keywords: Girls’ magazine, Gadis magazine, Ideal Image, Semiotics

Abstract

There are negative assumptions on fantasy that it is unrealistic and considered as immature and unacceptable. However, there are times when fantasy is the only way to cope the problems in the real life. In this study, I am going to analyze Alice in Wonderland (2010) movie in order to find out why Alice creates a fantasy of Wonderland. Using the theory of Freudian Psychology, I find that the causes of Alice creating Wonderland are three anxieties which are anxiety on tradition, love, and loss. These anxieties lead Alice to use two defense mechanisms, which are blocking her desire and creating Wonderland. Here, Alice’s Wonderland serves to solve her problem in the real life and satisfy her desires or ‘id’. In conclusion, fantasy is not always negative, but it can be positive.Alice’s Anxieties and Defense Mechanismsin Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland

Abstract

This study was done to find out: (1) the types of oral corrective feedback (CF) strategies, (2) the types of learners’ uptake, and (3) the types of learners’ uptake elicited in relation to the teacher’s types of oral CF. In order to answer the research questions, the writer applied two theories, Sheen and Ellis (2011) for oral CF strategies and Panova and Lyster (2002) for the types of learners’ uptake, as the guideline. This study used qualitative approach, using audio recording. The findings showed that there were forty three (43) oral CF occuring in the class, and forty one (41) uptakes elicited in relation to teacher’s oral CF. There were 2 (two) oral CF which did not result in uptake. Six (6) out of nine (9) oral CF strategies and seven (7) out of ten (10) types of learners’ uptake occurred in the class.  Didactic Recast was the most frequently applied oral CF strategies, whereas Repetition was the most frequently applied learners’ uptake type. There were 18 types of oral CF strategies and learners’ uptake sequences occurring in the class, and the most occurring sequence was Didactic Recasts – Repetition, with total 11 times. There were some possible reasons why uptakes did not occur:   learners were taking too long to answer or the teacher did not want to wait longer expecting that learner had already known the correct form through prior explanation. In order to maintain the class running smoothly, the teacher sometimes was faced to a situation when none uptakes were elicited from the learners. Keywords: corrective feedback, oral corrective feedback, uptake

Abstract

This study deals with the adaptation of an Indonesian novel entitled Imperfect (2019) by Meira Anastasia into a film with a similar title Imperfect (2019) by Ernest Prakarsa. Although there are differences between the novel and the film adaptation, they have similarities in terms of the main issue of women’s physical insecurities and their struggle for self-acceptance. Considering that aspect, this study aims to argue the persistent existence of patriarchal domination despite the differences in the storyline and characterization. The adaptation also bears similarities that indicate the issue of women's insecurities and struggle for acceptance. In this study, the theory of adaptation and patriarchal beauty standards are used as a tool to analyze the film adaptation. despite the adapters’ aim to raise the issue of women's physical insecurities and criticize the patriarchy’s standard of beauty, the film adaptation even indicates the persistence of patriarchal domination. Keyword: beauty standard, film adaptation, patriarchy, self-acceptance, women insecurities
