Abstract

The use of the internet as a medium of communication and interaction was inevitable. Information could spread very quickly, especially on issues such as religion. This also has an impact on the spread of hoax information on the internet. In conjunction with this, many websites/virtual groups have emerged and they carried an “anti-hoax” movement that could filter information, for example, MAFINDO (Masyarakat Anti Fitnah Indonesia – it could be translated in English as Indonesian Anti-Hoax Society). This group adherently helped people clarify misinformation on their website or social media. Therefore, this paper discussed the role of the anti-hoax group in maintaining religious harmony. This research used content analysis to show some posts of this group on their social media. The results of this study indicate that anti-hoax group plays an important role as cyber-police that will help maintain a harmonious life of religion. First, becomes the mover who creates an active, peaceful, and prosperous civil society. Second, becomes the collaborator that cooperates with other parties in an effort to combat fraud and hatred. Third, synergizes as an enlightener to integrate all positive social aspects to create an enlightened society that is immune to hoax outbreaks. Lastly, as the main source which developed a strong, credible, and accountable organization. With this role, the public could be digitally literate about content and misinformation circulating in the community.

Abstract

Temajuk village is one of the areas in the regency of Sambas, West Borneo, which is a bordering area with Malaysia. The location which is far from the center of government and close to the territory of another country can, to some extent, threaten the border society’s nationalism. Through a qualitative approach, this study examined the role of the Islamic education subject (PAI) and the local tradition (Saprahan) in strengthening the nationalism of the border people. The results showed that at least there are three teaching materials of Islamic Education (PAI) relevant to the values of nationalism i.e., democracy, tolerance, and unity and harmony. Such materials have a strategic role in providing nationalism reinforcement for students at a senior high school level. Meanwhile, the Saprahan tradition which has been held fast by Temajuk people showed that their nationalism principles are contained therein, i.e., unity, equality, and performance. The tradition also has a social function for the inhabitants of Temajuk to meet their basic and secondary needs.

Abstract

This article expects the readers to witness the condition of religious harmony in the village of Kutuk in Undaan, Kudus, Central Java. The people who live in the village share various religious backgrounds, but they live side by side in harmony. This condition is achieved as the results of the education carried out by the Kutuk people since ancient times that has passed down through generations. Then, what kind of education pattern is being developed by the community to accompany every Muslim to be a tolerant figure? This research question is answered through a qualitative research with a case study approach that uses non-measurement techniques in data collection processes, namely observation, interviews, and documentation. This study confirms that Kutuk village is a miniature of tolerant village in Kudus district. This village has a lifelong pattern of tolerance education, children with the education in their families, youth with peer education in youth organizations and adults with their educational councils. The methods that were utilized in the process of transmitting the tolerance values are education bil hal (education with good behavior and good examples), education bil maqol (education via oral tradition), and education bil du'a (education with a prayer). These findings provide some options to the community about applicable steps to empower families and communities in assisting Muslims to be tolerant. It is the evidence in the village that amaliyah of nahdliyyin such as yasinan, tahlilan, and berjanjenan have contributed signifi cantly to educate Muslim to be socially and theologically pious adherents of Islam.

Abstract

This research was conducted to understand the tension between two internal Hindu religious groups in Bali since 1984. The tension shows resistance of Balinese traditional Hindus to the Sampradaya or the spiritualist group of the Hare Krishna consciousness movement. The feud started from a hate speech on social media from both sides that leads to physical persecution. The research was conducted using a case study method, with interviews and observations at the scene and religious practices. This study found out that the conflict was rooted in different religious understandings between the Hare Krishna Gaudy Vaisnava theology and Balinese Hindu Traditional, as well as differences in acceptance of Balinese religious traditions. The contestation of the two parties escalated the feud on social media, then heated up to the closing of Hare Krishna's religious activities. The accumulation of tension was also triggered by religious activities and the appearance of Hare Krishna followers was considered to be in contrast to the Balinese traditional community, and the rite system was considered not to reflect Balinese customs. The research concludes that the institutional interaction between the two parties is deadlocked, although so far there is still a safety valve, namely Nyama Baraya, but the potential for conflict still arises. Similarity of ethnic background; dialogue intentions do not find common ground, the reintegration process is threatened with failure. A solution through dialogue is still the best step compared to resolving power or law enforcement, therefore efforts to bring the two parties together in dialogue must continue.

Abstract

The renewal of Islamic thinking continuously develops from time to time in Indonesia. This research tries to answer two main problems, they are: how are the reasoning or ideology developed by Liberal Islam Network (LIN)?; and how are LIN’s main ideas and their metamorphoses? The research applies qualitative method with hermeneutic approach. The data is collected by library research or text documentation. The data is collected on August 18th to August 29th 2015. The research finds that the ideas of Liberal Islam Network show significant liberal signs. From the ontology of text, in reading religious text, LIN’s assumptions are “the critics over the truth”. LIN applies humanistic approach in reading the religious texts. This is confirmed by LIN’s defense toward human’s dignity. From the aspect of theoretically analytical tools in reading religious texts, LIN applies social sciences, which are socio-historical analyses. LIN uses symbol or semiotics analyses to read the religious text. The main notions of LIN are: First, Islam changes, it is not static; second, context is the first and history is the latter. Here, in reading a religious text, LIN wants to place context (socio-history) proportionally; third, LIN intends to hold God in our ground and history. The metamorphoses of LIN’s ideas are: firstly is to oppose theocracy; secondly is to endorse democracy; thirdly is to endorse gender equality; fourthly is to contextualize religious doctrines; and fifthly is to support pluralism and freedom of thinking.
