Abstract

The most famous manāqib (hagiography) of Syaikh Abd al-Qadir al-Jailānī in Java, is an-Nūr al-Burhānī, written by Kyai Muslih al-Marāqī, a Javanese translation of al-Barzanji’s al-Lujain ad-Dānī. However, this book has its uniqueness and can be regarded as a new book because Kyai Muslih is not only a translator but also a commentator of the book. This article aims to describe the relationship between the book and other text. By intertextuality analysis, this paper finds that an-Nūr al-Burhānī is a revision of some translation books of al-Lujain ad-Dāni that have existed before, as well as constructed by quotations from 30 books, 24 verses of al-Qur'an, 50 ḥadiṣ and some poems. The relationship of intertextuality is indicated by excerpt, expansion, modification, and conversion. The excerpt is seen in Kyai Muslih’s sounding about controversial issues related to Sufism. The expansion is found when he speaks more extensively about the issues he discusses. The modification is shown by shortening a lengthy ḥadiṣ, a citation, and a title of a book. The conversion is seen when he criticizes another opinion he regards as not valid. Finally, an-Nūr al-Burhānī serves as hypotext for the subsequent works. At least, two books in the Indonesian language, namely Terjemah Manaqib Syaikh Abdul Qadir Jailani by Moh Saifulloh al-Aziz and Penuntun Manaqib Syeikh Abdul Qadir al-Jailani by Baidlowi Syamsuri are the translations of Javanese an-Nūr al-Burhānī and not a direct translation of Arabic al-Lujain ad-Dāni. These findings underline the importance of the translator's competence in order to produce good translation works, as is modeled by Kyai Muslih.

Abstract

This research was conducted at SMA Catholic Soverdi under umbrella ofCatholic foundation in Badung district Bali Province. Focuses of this study are,implementation of religious education was seen from the aspects of curriculumimplementation, influencing factors of curriculum implementation. Thisis a qualitative research. Finding of the research depicts that developmentof the religious education’s curriculum uses curriculum set by ministry ofeducation. Abstract

One of the key terms employed in exploring the story of Islamization in the archipelago is the acculturation between Islamic spectrum and local genius, through which the fie grain of Islamization flws. This paper aims to discuss this acculturation with special reference to the “cultural change” mechanism that reflcted in Sundanese local incantations. To some extents, it has reflcted the indigenous articulation of Islamic spectrum. In the tradition of Sundanese  oralliterature, particularly those are widely used by “pananyaan” (local shaman), there are several magical spells that creatively assimilate with the Islamic symbols. Using the ethnographic method and Haviland’s notion of the stages of “cultural change”, it provides a preliminary exploration on how they adopted as supplement or even transformed into local incantations and how the cultural change, in turn, synthetically happens. The research shows the various form of incantations; from hybrid incantations to pure Arabic “amalan”. They reflcted the presence of three kinds of mechanism as follows: (1) “the innovation” that reflcted in several mixture incantations, (2) “the diffsion” as represented by several incantations which indicated to have their origin from outside region, and (3) “the cultural loss” which represented by incantations in the Arabic formulas. This kind of assimilation has shown the reception of Sundanese people which also established by local determinations. In one sense, it also reflcted – in Ricklefs term – the “mystic synthesis” which regarded as the one of the “major gate” for Islamization of the archipelago.

Abstract

Various lontar and Tattwa scripts in Bali are the fruit of local wisdom inspired by the teachings of the Vedic scriptures. This local script is based on the truth that has been guiding most Balinese people. One of the Tattwa truths written in the Vedas is the concept of yoga as a means to attain spiritual awareness. Yoga offers a holistic, practical and religious approach that aims to help all components of the body work together in harmony. This text contains theology, cosmology, and practice of the teachings of Prayogasandhi (tapa, brata, yoga and samadhi) knowledge to save souls from misery. This study aims to understand the concept of Yoga in the Tattwa Jñana Script as a way to achieve spiritual awareness. The theory used is structural theory and semiotic theory. This study uses the method of collecting data documents and literature. The data analysis technique was carried out qualitatively by describing it descriptively. The results of this study indicate that: (1) The Tattwa Jñana script consists of prose which is divided into several chapters, and consists of 74 slokas in Old Javanese. (2) The concept of yoga in the Tattwa Jñana script is Prayogasandhi. Prayogasandhi is a means to attain spiritual awareness through tapas, brata, yoga and samadhi to Iswara (God). Prayogasandhi needs to be followed by discipline, true knowledge (samyagjna) and contemplation.

Abstract

The Qur’an is not merely a transcendental or spiritual Holy Scripture, but it also establishes itself as the full assurance and un-doubtful scripture that gives guidance and its explanation thereof. Oceanic versesare certain selected ayats or verses of the Qur’an that contain words of ‘ocean’ and ‘sea’ in several terms such as bahr, bahri, bahru, bihar, bahrayn, bahran, abhur, and bahiratun. These verses have been examined in classical and contemporary studies by putting together earlier exegeses with modern scientific records and field observations but not in terms of established theories, nor through socio-economic paralellistic approach. This paper focuses on the semantics and ontology of oceanic verses and paralellistic approach as they were revealed and found in 42 verses in the Qur’an. Keywords in those verses were studied to enable us to build and lead us to practical benefit in science, technology and methodology. The interpretation of Qur’anic verses pertaining to ocean phenomena offers an alternative interpretation on several relevant issues, including fire/energy within ocean; two oceans that do not mingle; the darkness of the ocean deep; the ocean boundaries; the layers of the ocean; and the abundance wealth and benefits from ocean for mankind. Indonesia is blessed with the ability to combine the Qur’an containing plenty of oceanic guidance and its geographical position as the most strategic archipelago on earth. Cascading the oceanic verses into daily da’wah and weekly Friday sermon is a necessary means to reap the ontological benefits of the blessing Qur’an and of dwelling in the largest marine continent of Indonesia.

Abstract

Disease prevention is almost always done with a modern approach through medical science or other public health sciences. This approach is the primary reference in mitigating the spread of the disease. In fact, in Indonesian society, there are local wisdoms in the traditions of each ethnic group in tackling the spread of disease, for example, the Javanese tradition. Javanese culture has local wisdom in dealing with pandemics passed down from generation to generation. This study attempts to answer how the mitigation pattern in Javanese culture is. Anthropologically, pandemics can be studied under health anthropology on disease. By taking the case of the Javanese people in Indonesia, this article describes local ways of preventing and overcoming disease outbreaks or mitigating disease outbreaks. The data source of this article is produced from qualitative research through interview techniques, focus group discussions, online seminars, and the study of manuscripts from magazines published in Java. The results showed that local communities, in addition to knowing the causes of disease, also developed ways to prevent and eliminate diseases, and mitigate outbreaks and pandemics. Javanese people see the mitigation of diseases physically and psychically. Physical mitigation tends to be in line with modern medical methods and the application of new normal. The mitigation of psychics is done by using mantras and songs and developing Javanese attitude of “narima ing pandum”  (take it as it comes).

Abstract

The dynamics of religious life in Surakarta is an interesting topic to be studied. Although this city is labeled as the home of radical Islamic groups in one side, this town has developed inter-religious harmony. This can be seen from the existence of mosque and church that are build side by side,  to name among those are; a mosque of Al-Hikmah with a church GKJ Joyodingratan, and a mosque sami'na with a church GBI Prosperous Diaspora. This study uses a qualitative method. There are two main findings of this research. Firstly, there is  tolerance initiated by the religious leaders. Secondly, there is cooperation, mutual assistance, and mutual respect in conducting worship. Furthermore, there is an inclusive attitude in practicing their religion, a wise and open attitude in dealing with activities held between nearby places of worship.

Abstract

AbstrakAgama Islam dianut oleh sebagian besar penduduk Kalimantan Tengah yang terdiri dari berbagai etnis seperti Dayak, Banjar, Jawa, Madura, dan lainnya. Penelitian ini mengkaji dinamika hubungan intern umat Islam dalam konteks relasi etnisitas dan agama di Kalimantan Tengah. Permasalahannya adalah bagaimana dinamika hubungan inten umat Islam, faktor pendukung kerukunan, dan strategi adaptasi membangun harmoni di Kalimanta Tengah. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dengan pendekatan kualitatif dimana pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui wawancara, observasi, Focus Group Discussion (FGD), dan telaah dokumen. Hubungan intern umat Islam di Kalimantan Tengah diwarnai dengan tanggapan terhadap konflik etnistahun 2001 antara Etnis Dayak dan Madura. Faktor yang mendukung kerukunan yang tercapai saat ini antara lain adanya daya tawar budaya, simbiosisme ekonomi, peran tokoh masyarakat, dan peran pemerintah. Adapun strategi adaptasi yang dilakukan untuk memelihara harmoni dilakukan secara kultural dengan revitalisasidan akulturasi budaya dan nilai-nilai lokal, serta secara struktural dengan politik uniformitas baik yang dilakukan oleh pranata Adat Dayak maupun pemerintah Kalimantan Tengah.Kata kunci: Kerukunan, Budaya Dominan, Politik Uniformitas, Strategi Adaptasi AbstractIslam is professed by the majority of people in Central Kalimantan who consists of various ethnic groups such as the Dayak, Banjar, Javanese, Madurese, and others. This study discusses about the dynamics of internal relationship among Muslim in the context of the relationship of ethnicity and religion in Central Kalimantan. The problems are how the dynamics of the internal relationship amongst Muslims in CentralKalimantan and what factors are supporting to the reconciliation and adaptation strategies to build harmony amongst them. This research was carried out with the qualitative approach in which data were collected through interviews, observation, Focus Group Discussions (FGD), and document review. The results of the study showthat the internal relations among Muslims in Central Kalimantan was coloured by the responses to the ethnic conflict in 2001 between Dayaknese and Madurese. The study can also reveal that the factors which support to the achieved-harmony today are include the bargaining power of the culture, economic simbiosism, the roles of both community leaders and the local goventment. The adaptation strategies carried out to maintain the harmony were conducted in two ways: culturally (revitalizing and acculturating cultures and local values) and structurally (political uniformity which is performed not only by the social institution of Dayaknese but also by the localgovernment of Central Kalimantan).Keywords: Harmony, Dominant Culture, Politics Uniformity, Adaptation Strategies

Abstract

This research was generally based on an interesting phenomenon in 2006, when Merapi erupted. There was Maridjan’s rebellion as a royal servant to climb down from Merapi when Hamengkubuwono X as the king commanded him. The main questions were what were the factors of Maridjan’s resistances?; what were the forms of Maridjan capitals in this fighting?; and what did Maridjan get from the bet as the winner? The approach of this research was anthropological perspective using participatory observation and analyzed by qualitative method. To get data, researcher lived in Maridjan’s house for several months in Merapi. The findings of the study were there was Maridjan’s resistance which was interpreted as a fighting created by media. The second was Maridjan’s resistance supported by two capital powers; the cultural power as the Merapi’s caretaker and the discourse capital supported by the media. The third was Maridjan won the bet by getting the prestige in his social status either popularities or wealth.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to discuss an Indonesian Shi’i movement called OASE (Organization of Ahlulbayt for Social-support and Education). Coordinated by Emilia Renita Az, OASE marks the unique movement of Shi’i women in Indonesia, along with the existing Shi’i representative organization in the country, such as IJABI (Ikatan Jama’ah Ahlul Bait Indonesia/The All-Indonesian Assembly of Ahlulbayt Associations) and ABI (Ahlul Bait Indonesia/Indonesian Ahlulbayt). Using the perspective of social-movement, this paper seeks to capture the origin of OASE, its basic creeds, and its contribution of social activities in the Indonesian public sphere. The three-fold layers (artifact, sociofact, and mentifact) are used to explore its social works. The researcher’s engagement with the leader of OASE in a depth-interview is the method to collect the data in addition to analyze several artifact including documents, photos, and posters. The research finds several important points, including the founding of OASE as the “child” of reformasi (post-new order Indonesia), the nature of shi’i philanthropic activities as their spirit of social works through the lens of the mentioned three-fold layers, and the position of OASE among the other Indonesian Shi’i groups in the light of the international context of shi’i marja’iyya
