Abstract

Poverty and social problems give rise to many different perspectives and analyzes related to the causative factors and their complexity. These differences have an impact on different social interventions conducted by various parties, including among pesantren in Indonesia. Using qualitative method, this study explores the perspectives and analysis of pesantren on poverty and community empowerment in two pesantrens organizing socio-economic empowerment programs for subordinate groups namely Pesantren Al-Imdad in Yogyakarta and Pesantren Maslakul Huda in Central Java. This research results in three types of analysis, i.e. conventional, semi-progressive and progressive. The conventional analysis defines poverty as community’s inability to meet their basic needs, caused by their own mistakes of not having skills and enterpreneurship so that empowerment is viewed as a tool to direct the community in accordance with the pesantren’s decisions of empowerment programs. The semi-progressive analysis defines poverty as a multidimenstional problem, caused by structural and human factors so that empowerment is viewed as a strategy to increase the capacity of community and pesantren. The progressive analysis defines poverty as multidimentional problem, caused by structural factors and community is seen as a victim of unjust system so that empowerment is viewed as pesantren's alignments to subordinate groups by organizing joint forces to fight for the rights and interests of the community.

Abstract

Most studies discussing about interfaith marriage and religious conversion are ignoring woman's autonomy in selecting spouse as well as choosing religion. This paper examines the agency of women who converted due to marriage based on the experiences of four women in two areas in Aceh, the South East Aceh, and Aceh Singkil. Data was collected through observation and semi-structured interviews of four converted women, her husband, and her relatives. The phenomenon of religious conversion on the reason of marriage is placed in the feminist poststructuralist discourse, especially the concept of pious agency and critical piety agency. This paper challenges the view that says religious conversion on the reason of marriage will give the result to those who converted that religion to them is merely administrative matters and they lose their focus on building personal piety. Instead, this article argued the possibility of people who convert to other religion represent their religiosity after conversion as well as before conversion.

Abstract

Religion and nationalism are two terms that are closely related with one another. In Indonesia, the debate about religion and nationalism has narrowed down to two major issues: The first is the integration of religion and nationalism in the form of a religious state. The second is religious accommodation within the country. The Indonesian founding fathers have agreed to choose the accommodation model by making Pancasila as the foundation of the country, whose core is based on the universal values of religion, such as divinity, humanity, unity, deliberation and social justice. This research was conducted in Gorontalo city and applies qualitative method. Data collection was carried out using interview techniques and document studies. Interviews were conducted with informants ranging from religious leaders, historians, and academics. This paper aims to illustrate that the choice to accommodate religion in the country is the right action, given the national movement in Indonesia is based on religious movements. The independence movement in 1942 in Gorontalo was the culmination of the movement of nationalist movement such as Sinar Budi and Islamic-based organizations such as Syarikat Islam (SI), Muhammadiyah, Nahdlatus Sjafiiah, which had been carried out 10-20 years earlier.

Abstract

Moral values undoubtedly play a significant role in human life. These values are not only in religious texts (such as Qur’an, Hadits, Old Testament, Bible, Book of Psalms) but also in literatures. One of the examples is lyrics of Rhoma Irama’s song from 1970s to 1980s. This is a library research using a content analysis approach. Meanwhile, this research utilizes semiotic and hermeneutic methods. The findings show that the lyrics of Rhoma Irama’s song during 1970-1980 contained some moral values which could be implemented in personal life, family, society and religious life. The important values contained in such songs are amanah (trustful), as-siddiq (truth, honesty), al-‘adl (justice), al-rahmah (love), al-ukhuwah (brotherhood) and tasamuh (tolerance). The aforementioned values refer to  two Islamic primary sources that are relevant to all times, in the past, present and future.
