Abstract

Background: Bruxism is considered to be a common condition among the adult population, although data on bruxism are still rare. Bruxism is repetitive jaw activity during sleep (sleep bruxism) and awake (awake bruxism). In healthy individuals, bruxism should not be regarded as a disorder, but as a behavior that can be a risk factor for certain clinical conditions. Several studies have stated that the accuracy of self-reported bruxism is low because the individual is less aware of the behavior. Aim: To find out the concordance of the results of self-reported bruxism before and after self-observation. Methods: The type of research used in this research is analytic observational using a cross-sectional research design. The data was obtained by distributing questionnaires via a google form link to 142 FKG Usakti students class 2020. Inter Class Correlation (ICC) was calculated to assess the concordance between the two assessments using five items of Oral Behavior Checklist questionnaire (OBCL). Results: High concordance was shown between assessment prior and after self observation. The ICC results range from 0.636 to 0.838 for five items of OBCL Conclusion: There is a high concordance between the results of self-reported bruxism before and after self-observation.

Abstract

Background: Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb. has bioactive compounds that are beneficial as anti-inflammatory. To get these compounds need to be extracted. Ethanol 70% can increase the solubility of both polar and non-polar compounds. RAW 264.7 cells with LPS induction cause an inflammatory state due to the active pro-inflammatory cytokines. To suppress the development of inflammation, a cytotoxicity test can be carried out to see the toxic nature of the extract against inflamed cells. Goals: To determine the cytotoxicity effect of 70% ethanol extract of C. xanthorrhiza on LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells. Methods: In vitro laboratory experimental research. Preparation of extracts of C. xanthorrhiza Roxb. carried out with 70% ethanol then made concentrations of 200, 100, 50, 25, 12.5, 6.25, and 3.125 g/mL. Cytotoxicity was tested using the MTS. Untreated culture medium was used as a negative control and a positive control of diclofenac sodium. Then it was incubated for 24 hours at 37oC. After 24 hours of incubation, MTS was added to the plate and incubated again for 3 hours. The results were read using spectrophotometry. The resulting absorption is equivalent to living cells. The research data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Dunnet T3 tests. Results: Extracts of C. xanthorrhiza with concentrations of 200 and 100 g/mL were weakly cytotoxic and at concentrations of 50, 25, 12.5, 6.25, and 3.125 g/mL showed non-toxic effects on LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells. Based on the IC50, C. xanthorrhiza Roxb. extract had a strong cytotoxic effect on LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells. Conclusion: C. xanthorrhiza extract was toxic to LPS-induced RAW 264 cells.

Abstract

Vertical dysplasia in pediatric patients is divided into vertical overgrowth dysplasia and vertical growth deficiency dysplasia. Although it is still debated when to start treating vertical dysplasia, recently, there has been increasing interest in treating vertical dysplasia that sometimes accompanies cases of sagittal or transverse dysplasia. The clinical picture of vertical overgrowth dysplasia is generally manifested by a large anterior facial height, especially in the one-third anterior lower part of the face, sometimes accompanied by an anterior open bite. Treatment of children with vertical dysplasia, especially those with excessive vertical dysplasia, should be done early so the disorder does not get worse and can take advantage of the existing growth potential. Treatment of cases of vertical dysplasia must consider the nature of the abnormality, namely dental or skeletal abnormalities, morphological age, the direction of mandibular rotation, and the possibility of other dysplasia and existing etiological factors..

Abstract

Aesthetic treatments related to the perfect smile are important in contemporary clinical dentistry. The disharmony of the smile, often called the gummy smile, can be caused by vertical maxillary growth, dentoalveolar extrusion, short upper lip, hyperactivity of the upper lip, altered passive eruption (APE), or a combination of such factors. Some studies mention the possibility of APE being a risk factor for periodontal disease. In some cases, excessive gingival can interfere with oral hygiene procedures and result in plaque accumulation and inflammation of the gingival margin. The management of APE is by periodontal crown lengthening surgery. The selection of the crown lengthening technique is adjusted to the classification, thickness, and number of keratinized gingiva, as well as the location of the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) or bone peak against the gingival margin.

Abstract

Background: Avulsion of permanent teeth is one of the most serious dentoalveolar injuries. Appropriate emergency management and a treatment plan are important for a good prognosis. Therefore general dental practitioners (GDPs) must have adequate knowledge regarding the management of permanent avulsed teeth. Objective: Evaluate the knowledge base and preferred methods of general dental practitioners regarding the management of avulsed teeth. Methods: Observativational descriptive with cross-sectional was employed for sample selection. A pre-tested 13-item online questionnaire was distributed to 98 Jakarta GDPs. The data obtained were then categorized into 3 levels which are high (≥76%), moderate (56-75%), and low (≤55%). Results: This study revealed that the majority of GDPs' knowledge is moderate. 21,4% of participants showed good knowledge, while 53,1% are moderate, and the other 24,5% lack the knowledge needed to manage avulsions. Mann-Whitney U test results showed that there was no statistically significant difference between males and females (p = 0.296) nor between the length of practice 0-10 years and >10 years (p = 0.134). Conclusions: The study findings showed that the Jakarta GDPs need to improve their knowledge about the management of permanent avulsed teeth.

Abstract

Background: The transmission rate of COVID -19 cases continues to occur every day, followed by the development of new variants which have serious and worrying public health problems. The dentists and dental students have a significant risk of COVID-19 transmission. Thus, as the prospective dentist, it is important for the dental students to have good knowledge about the prevention of COVID-19 infection, especially in the dental practices, which will participate in breaking the chain of COVID-19 transmission. Objective: to find out an overview of preclinical students' knowledge at the Faculty of Dentistry Trisakti University about the prevention of COVID-19 infection in dental practices. Methods: This study was a descriptive observational study with a cross-sectional design conducted on preclinical students in the 7th semester at the Faculty of Dentistry, Trisakti University. The students' knowledge was measured by filling out the questionnaire, which has been tested for its validity and reliability using the Pearson product moment correlation and Cronbach Alpha, then the questionnaires were distributed online to the students using Google Form. Results: Out of 131 respondents, it was obtained that 45.8% of respondents had a low knowledge level, 42% of respondents had moderate knowledge level, and 12.2% of respondents had high knowledge level about the prevention of COVID-19 infection in dental practices. Conclusion: This study shows that most of the students' knowledge was still inadequate in the prevention of COVID-19, especially in dental practices. Students need to be more active in obtaining information related to the prevention of COVID-19 infection, and there needs to be an emphasis on training at the preclinical level so that the students can avoid the risk of COVID-19 transmissions or maybe some other infectious disease.
