Abstract

Background: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammation of periodontal tissue. The progression of periodontitis depends on the immune response and host vulnerability. Studies have demonstrated oxidative stress as part of periodontal pathogenesis. Oxidative stress is a condition that occurs when there is an imbalance between free radical levels and antioxidants. Objectives: This literature review aims to give an overview of free radicals and antioxidants in periodontal disease. Literature Reviews: Antioxidants act as part of the host defense that neutralize free radicals. Antioxidants are not only important for inhibiting oxidative stress and tissue damage, but also important in preventing the increased production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which results from persistent activation of the host defense response. Conclusion: Periodontal condition can be affected by endogenous antioxidant levels. Because of its important role, exogenous antioxidants should be added to complement endogenous antioxidants. Natural exogenous antioxidants can be obtained from certain foods.

Abstract

Occlusal trauma is a pathological condition that occurs as a result of excessive occlusal forces that exceed the adaptive capacity of the periodontal tissues. Although not the primary cause of periodontitis, occlusal trauma can exacerbate existing periodontal inflammation and accelerate the destruction of supporting tooth structures. Occlusal interferences, such as premature contacts, as well as articulation interferences or blocking during mandibular movements, are factors that can increase the mechanical load on the periodontium. These disturbances may lead to secondary occlusal trauma in teeth with compromised periodontal support. Understanding occlusal and articulation interferences is essential for maintaining periodontal health, as proper occlusal adjustment and functional balance can help prevent further damage to the tooth-supporting tissues. This study aims to review the role of these interferences on secondary occlusal trauma in periodontitis patients.

Abstract

Background: Endodontically treated teeth are prone to biomechanical failure due to substantial structural loss, often necessitating fiber post–core and Zirconia crown restorations to re-establish tooth integrity and function. The choice of fiber post–core and Zirconia crown is determined by the amount of remaining tooth structure. Case Description: A 38-year-old male presented with a two-month history of throbbing pain in tooth 37, accompanied by discomfort during mastication. The patient had been self-medicating with mefenamic acid and reported no systemic illnesses. Intraoral examination revealed moderate oral hygiene (OHI-S 2) and a large occlusal cavity with a pulp polyp (Black Class II, Mount–Hume 2.4, ICDAS D6). Cold testing elicited a positive response, with tenderness to percussion but normal mobility and probing depths. Radiographic evaluation demonstrated pulp chamber radiolucency, widening of the periodontal ligament space, thickening of the lamina dura, and periapical radiolucency. The diagnosis was symptomatic irreversible pulpitis with apical periodontitis. The patient underwent root canal therapy followed by post–core and crown restoration. Discussion: Fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) posts provide dentin-like elasticity, favorable esthetics, and superior fracture resistance compared to metal posts, allowing more uniform stress distribution in endodontically treated teeth. The use of an FRC post combined with a Zirconia crown following root canal therapy successfully restored the tooth’s structure, function, esthetics, and long-term retrievability. Conclusion: Fiber post–core and Zirconia crown restoration is an effective approach for rehabilitating endodontically treated teeth at risk of biomechanical failure, offering dentin-like elastic properties and uniform stress distribution to optimize functional and esthetic outcomes.

Abstract

Background: Molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a qualitative developmental enamel defect affecting one or more first permanent molars, with or without involvement of permanent incisors. MIH has emerged as a significant global oral health concern due to its high and increasing prevalence, wide variation across regions, and substantial clinical impact and quality of life on affected children. Objectives: This literature review aims to comprehensively discuss MIH, including its definition, epidemiology, clinical characteristics, etiology, diagnostic criteria, differential diagnosis, and associated clinical problems. Results: The reviewed literature demonstrates that the prevalence of MIH ranges widely worldwide, influenced by differences in diagnostic indices, examination protocols, and age groups studied. Clinically, MIH is characterized by demarcated opacities, enamel porosity, post-eruptive enamel breakdown, hypersensitivity, and atypical restorations, which predispose affected teeth to rapid caries progression and repeated dental interventions. The etiology of MIH is considered multifactorial, involving prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal factors; however, definitive causal mechanisms remain unclear. Accurate diagnosis relies on standardized criteria, particularly those recommended by the European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry, to ensure consistency in identification and reporting. Given the functional, esthetic, and psychosocial consequences of MIH, early detection and appropriate management are essential. Conclusion: This review highlights the importance of improving fundamental knowledge among dental practitioners to facilitate timely diagnosis and early intervention, thereby reducing disease severity and contributing to the prevention of increasing MIH prevalence.

Abstract

Background: Facial balance serves as an early indicator for dentists in analyzing patient's facial skeletal structure. It can be analyzed by comparing the height proportion of the upper (trichion-glabella), middle (glabella-subnasale), and lower (subnasale-menton) face regions. Ideal facial balance is achieved when the distance between facial parts is equal. Currently, facial height measurement can be done digitally using 3D models with photogrammetry, a cost-effective, efficient, and non-invasive technique for reconstructing and measuring 3D models. 3DF Zephyr can be an option for reconstructing and measuring 3D models. Objectives: This study aims to determine the differences in accuracy of measuring facial height proportion using 3DF Zephyr and the direct method. Methods: A total of 32 subjects of preclinical students from Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Trisakti, aged 19-21 years old were measured for facial height proportion on the upper, middle, and lower face regions using a caliper. Next, 50 facial photographs were taken from various directions, angles, and positions using smartphone camera, then reconstructed and measured as a 3D model using 3DF Zephyr. Results: The independent t-test showed no significant difference between the two methods (p>0,05). Conclusion: There is no significant difference between 3DF Zephyr and the direct measurement in measuring facial height proportion.

Abstract

Background: Resin cement is a cement luting material that is widely used in the field of dentistry because it has superior mechanical and physical properties compared to other luting materials. The composition of resin cement greatly affect the physical and mechanical properties of the resin cement. Dual cure self-adhesive resin cement and dual cure adhesive resin cement are in fact only different based on the adhesive material. However, both materials have several different compositions that can affect the mechanical properties, one of which is flexural strength. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the flexural strength of self-adhesive dual cure and adhesive dual cure resin cement materials. Methode: This study is an experimental research that was performed at the Dental Material and Testing Centre of Research and Education (DMT Core) Laboratory, Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Trisakti, Jakarta. The object of the study was self-adhesive dual cure and adhesive dual cure resin cement materials. The resin cement was put into the preparation tube and then attached to the automix tip. Inject the samples on a rectangular mould with dimensions of 25 mm long, 2 mm wide, and 2 mm high which can then be light cured. The sample was made as many as 8 samples. The flexural strength test can be carried out using a Universal Testing Machine (UTM) at a speed of 0.75mm/min. The resulting data was tested for normality with Saphiro Wilk and Independent T test. Conclusion: Dual cure self-adhesive resin cement has a higher average flexural strength value than and dual cure adhesive resin cement.

Abstract

One of the materials that can be used as an alternative denture cleaner is turi leaf (Sesbania grandiflora). The content of secondary metabolites in turi leaf plays a major role in inhibiting the growth of Candida albicans fungi. Unclean dentures can result in the formation of C. albicans from the accumulation of food debris. The microporosity of heat cured acrylic resin causes C.albicans to stick more easily. Therefore, dentures must be cleaned chemically or immersing it in a cleaning solution for a certain duration. Objective: To determine the effect of immersion duration of heat cured acrylic resin in turi leaf extract (Sesbania grandiflora) on the growth of C. albicans. Research Methods: This study used 40 acrylic resin plates which were divided into 8 groups of turi leaf extract immersion of 25% concentration with a duration of 6 hours and 8 hours, 50% concentration with a duration of 6 hours and 8 hours, 2% chlorhexidine gluconate (positive control), and Saboraud Dextrose Broth (negative control), then rinsed and vortexed in PBS and counted C. albicans colonies on agar medium that had been scraped with the PBS solution. Result: In a study on C. albicans, the data showed a normal distribution (p>0.05). A One-Way ANOVA test indicated significant differences (p
