Abstract

This research aimed at analyzing the errors on sentence structure in writing recount text made by eleventh grade of SMK Negeri2 Siduaori.This research was designed by using qualitative descriptive method. In analyzing the data, the research used theory of Miles Huberman and Saldana (20:31-33). data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing verification. The data of this study was taken from the eleventh grade students of SMK Negeri 2 Siduaori. The data of this study are students errors in use past tense.To examine the credibility of this study the researcher used triangulation. The results of this study showed that students made errors because of they are not mastering the pattern of past tense, not mastering tenses,lessmotivation,less vocabulary. It is suggested to the teacher to pay much attention to the error in order to use appropriate strategy in teaching recount text errors, especially in use of the simple past tense, passive and active verbal sentence and in nominal sentence and students can come understand how to write a good recount text.

Abstract

Grammar is the rules of a language governing the sounds, words, sentences, and other elements, as well as their combination and interpretation. In grammar, there is tense in English which must we know, they were past tense, present tense, future tense, and past future. But here, there are still many students made errors in using past tense of narrative text. This research was aimed to analysic the Error on The Use of Past Tense in Narrative Text Made by Eleventh Grade Of SMK Swasta BNKP Daro-Daro Balaekha. This research designed by using qualitative descriptive method. In analyzing the data, the research used theory of Miles and Huberman; data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification.the data was documentation, worksheet and interview. The data source of this study was taken from the eleventh grade students of SMK Swasta BNKP Dara-Daro Balaekha. The data of this study are students ‘errors in use past tense. To examine the credibility of this study the researcher used triangulation. The results of this study there are 7 students not mastering the pattern. Then, students difficult to differentiate the use of verbs in sentence are 7, do not have any dictionary are 2 and other reasons limited of vocabulary are 2. The students stated that their teacher usually only give the books rare explain about how to use past tense. From the result of the research, researcher concluded that students conduct errors because of not mastering the pattern of past tense. Suggestion for teacher, students and next researcher expect the result of this research can be benefit for all the sources in scientific work especially.

Abstract

Song lyric is one of literary works and it is has meaning. Song lyric contain word and language that expose the author’s thought and feeling. So may people in this world like to listen to the song. But sometimes the listener confused to understand what the song writer mean or what the meaning of the song because sometimes in the song lyric has the same words but has different meaning. This research was aimed to analyze lexical and contextual meaning expression found in Alan Walker song lyric at World of Walker album. This research designed by using qualitative descriptive method. In analyzing the data, the researcher used theory of Creswell. The source of the data in this study was taken from the Alan Walker song lyric at World of Walker album that was obtained from internet by downloaded the lyric from of the song. The data of this research are word, phrase and sentence in the lyrics that exist the album. Based on the result of research, it was found that there were 34 expressions that contain contextual meaning. There are expressions in the form of word and phrases, generally those expression are related to a person’s feelings or expression. On the other side, the lexical meaning form are only expressions that contain contextual meaning.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to improve students’ ability in writing descriptive text through Concept Sentence Model (CSM). The kind of this research was Classroom Action Research (CAR) which was done in two cycles. It was conducted at the Eighth Grade of SMP Swasta Imanuel Telukdalam that consisted of 22 students, the female are 11 students and male were 11 students. The instruments of collecting the data were observation paper and written test. The result showed that, the researcher’s observation paper in cycle I for the first meeting was 56% and second meeting was 67%. In the cycle II for the first meeting was 79% and second meeting 100%. The result of the student’s observation paper in the cycle I for the first meeting was 43% and second meeting was 55%. In the cycle II for the first meeting was 55% and the second meeting was 72%. Furthermore, the result of the test in cycle I, students who passed was 6 students or 27% while the students who failed as 16 students or 73% the average score was 53. Therefore, cycle I was not unsuccessful so the researcher continued in cycle II. In the cycle II, the students who passed the MCC were 20 students or 91% while the students who failed was only 2 students or 9% with the average score was 73. In this second cycle, The students are more active in learning, the students can study in groups and could share their opinions each other, students felt enjoy the class and more creatively. Therefore, Concept Sentence Model was suitable to improve the students’ vocabulary mastery. Therefore, researcher suggested the English teacher to apply Concept Sentence Model in teaching writing, for the students, concept sentence model is usefull and helpful in writing ability. Then for the next researcher, this research can be a source or reference of knowledge about this method in doing research.

Abstract

This research was aimed at analyzing the structures and functions of noun phrase which have been used in Justin Bierber’s song that contained in “purpose”album.This research was designed by using qualitative method. The data were analyzed byusing Creswell’theory. There are data condensation, data display, and drawing conclution. The result of data analysis showed that there were 148 noun phrases which have been found. They were classified into 6 structures:determiner+head,determiner+pre-modifier+head, determiner+head+postmodifier,determiner+premodifier+head+postmodifier,head+modifier,andpremodifier+head. In addition, there are six syntactic functions: as subject, subject of completment, object, object of preposition, object of completment and component of preposition. Based on the research finding, it can be concluded that mostly song lyrics in ‘purpose” album were intended to use noun phrase to construct the sentences and delivering meaning of the song lyrics. Thus, noun phrase is the effective aspect that can be used in aliterary works to provide or give information in detail about a sentence depended on the function attached to the noun phrase.

Abstract

This research aimed at analyzing the cohesion and coherence in Barack Obama’s speech text “Final presidential press conference of year”. This research designed by the qualitative method with descriptive approach. Then, researcher used the Miles, Huberman, & Saldana theory to analyze the cohesion and coherence in the speech text. The result of this research showed all of cohesion and coherence devices were found. The data of this research were words and phrases. Based on summary of the result, that Barack Obama’s speech text “Final Presidential Press Conference of Year” contained grammatical cohesion devices, they are reference (34), subtitution (1), ellipsis (12), and conjuntion (60). And then, it contained the lexical cohesion devices. They are; reiteration (47) and collocation (11). Moreover, it contained the coherence devices. They are; repeat key nouns (9), consistent pronoun (5), transition signals (53), and the ideas in the speech text are arranged structurally. Based on the research finding, in the spech text, the cohesion devices dominanted in grammatical cohesion, especially in using conjuction. And the coherence devices dominanted in using transition signals. It is suggested that English learners’ should pay attention about the usage of cohesion and coherence in order to create a good text as well as a speech. For the teachers, hopefully this research could be used to enrich their teaching material. And for the next researcher, can get information and knowledge to create a text grammatically and semantically.

Abstract

This research aimed at identifying the type of illocutionary act and the function of illocutionary act in President Donald Trump’s speech about Coronavirus Task Force Briefing in 2020. This research was designed by using Qualitative research method. The data was analyzed by using the theory of Miles, et all (2014:31-33). The result of this research showed that there were five types illocutionary act namely: verdictives, exercitives, commisives, behabitives, and expositives. Those illocutionary act found function to as evaluate, suggest, advice, promise, appreciate, and explain. Based on the results, it can be concluded expositives become as the dominant types of illocutionary act used in Donald Trump’s speech. It is suggested that illocutionary should be learned and more understand deeply.

Abstract

A comparison/contrast paragraph can be organized into two ways known point-by-point, and block model. The most of fifth semester students of English department at Nias Raya University, however, prefer to organize their writing with block model. The reasons for choosing the model were the purposes of this research. This research was carried out by using qualitative descriptive. The data were obtained through unstructured questionnaire. The result of this research showed that there are three reasons of the students in using block model in organizing the comparison/contrast paragraph; the first is easier to be organized; the next is good for the shorter paragraph; and the last is the similarities or differences between the compared subjects is understood easily. Hence, block organization for a comparison/contrast paragraph is the easiest way for the students to construct their paragraph to be interested writing rather than other style. Therefore, this information can be a consideration for the lecturer in teaching the type of the paragraph.

Abstract

This research was aimed at improving students’ vocabulary mastery through jigsaw model. This research was designed by using Classroom Action Research (CAR) which was done in two cycles. The subject of this research was the Eight Grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Amandraya. They consist of 30 students. The instrument of collecting the data were observation paper and test. Based on the data analysis, the result of the researcher’s observation paper in cycle I for the first meeting was 79% and second meeting 86%. Cycle II for the first meeting 85% while in the second meeting was 93%. The result of student’s observation paper on the cycle I for the first meeting 70%, second meeting was 82% and cycle II in the first meeting 80% and the second meeting was 93%. Furthermore, the result of the test of students in cycle I, the average score 55, while cycle II was 82. Thus, it can be stated that the students problem in vocabulary mastery is solved by using jigsaw model. Finally, it is suggested to the English teacher to use jigsaw model to enrich the student vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

This research aimed to know the types of figurative language which are exist in the album "In The Lonely Hour" by Sam Smith and the meaning of the song lyric. This research was designed by using the qualitative method. The source of the data was the album and the data are song lyrics which contain figurative language. Based on the result of the research, it was found 1 Metaphor, 2 personifications, 2 similes, and 5 hyperboles. The total number of figurative language found from the album is ten (10). This implies that the album lacks certain types of figurative language, namely apostrophe, metonymy, synecdoche, understatement, and paradox. The-song “in. the. Lonely. .Hour” Album By. Sam .Smith utilizes figurative language to enhance its beauty and captivate listeners. The chosen figurative-language-carries-profound-meanings within the song's lyrics. Using this song as a teaching tool for semantics, particularly for understanding figurative language, is recommended.
