Abstract

Language is tool for human to share feeling and idea and when we building communication with other we need speaking where in Speaking is a activities that can do all human to interact for other people or transfer information by language, Speaking is one of the components in teaching English and make a connection between one person to another got information or share the idea and massage. This research aimed to Improving student’s Speaking Skill by using Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) Method at Tenth Grade of SMA Negeri 1 Lahusa. The researcher used theory Richards and Rodgers, to Improving student’s speaking because this method can devoted students to communication in english by carrying out actual social interactions, such as presentation and discussion. To find out the result of research used data analysis, the result is analyzed by assessing speaking they are accent, grammar, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension from CAR (classroom action research ) (quantitative data) and data collection take from observation and documentation (qualitative data). The implementation communicative language teaching method involving students in the learning process. Communicative Language Teaching method is appropriate in teaching speaking skill. In teaching apply by researcher to solve the students problem in speaking ability. Communicative language teaching method in the learning teaching process can make the students active, involved and free and confidence-self when we try make interest in without puss down their motivate in the learning process.

Abstract

This research aimed at finding out the students’ problem in writing descriptive text at the seventh grade. This research was designed by using qualitative research with descriptive approach. The data of this research were obtained from the students’ worksheets about writing descriptive text and interview result. The data obtained were analyzing by using Miles and Huberman (1984) theory, there are: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The result of this research showed that most students have problem in developing their idea to create content, low mastery of text organization, students did not know the grammar correctly, and students still did not understand the mechanic in writing paragraph especially in the spelling, capitalization and punctuation, and have difficulties in vocabulary. The factors which caused students problem in writing descriptive text were lack of knowledge, lack of grammar understanding and lack of vocabulary. It is suggested to the English teacher to teach students intensively about how to use organization, content, grammar, mechanic and vocabulary in writing descriptive text. For the learners the researcher suggested to be more in diligent studying and practice producing descriptive texts as a means to enhance their writing skills.

Abstract

This research aimed at analyzing grammatical errors on students’ writing narrative text of second grade at SMA Negeri 2 Hilimegai academic year 2022/2023. This research was designed by using qualitative descriptive method. In analyzing the data, the researcher used theory of Miles et al. The source of data in this study was taken from students’ writing of narrative text. The members of participant consist of 17 students. The data of this study were grammatical errors in narrative text. The result of the research showed that there were 337 grammatical errors made by students from six categories of grammatical errors types, namely; error in using past tense was 132 errors, error of action verb was 108 errors, error in building noun phrase was 48 errors, error of pronoun 32 errors, error of adverb 11 errors and time connection 6 errors. It can be concluded that in writing narrative texts there are several grammatical errors made by the second grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Hilimegai academic year 2022/2023. It is suggested that teachers use the most appropriate creative teaching methods and techniques to make students interested in learning English.

Abstract

This study deals with how students' perceptions of the use of social media in learning English. The purpose is to describe students' perceptions the use of social media in learning English. The design of di this research is qualitative research design. The data source is fifth English semester students of Nias Raya University. This study used an unstructured questionnaire with 32 participants. The result of the study is the social media platforms that were often used by them were Youtube, Instagram, Tiktok and Facebook. Those social media platforms provided lots of previous English material to be learned and possibly will provide many new things. Learning through social media can strengthen independent learning, students do not find any obstacles in using social media to learn English, social media provided fun learning for students, using social media increases in-depth knowledge for students, learning using social media has a positive impact on every positive impact of every learning accessed. It is concluded that students' perceptions of the use of social media make them fun in learning English by using this social media. The students can learn freely and enjoyable and the students can learn without pressure. The students happy to learn by using the social media. Learning from social media, it can be lead students to learn not only in their class, but anywhere. And Its make their knowledge and motivation increase. It is suggested that the results of this study can serve as a reference for future readers or researchers.

Abstract

This study dealt with how students' ability in writing descriptive text at the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Teluk Dalam. The purpose of this study was to describe students' ability in writing descriptive text. This research used qualitative research. The data were taken from 26 descriptive text that made by students. The data source was eleventh students at SMA Negeri 1 Teluk Dalam Academic Year 2023/2024. The researcher used documentation technique to collect the students’ writing of descriptive text. The finding shows that students’ abilities in writing descriptive text were based on five assessment components in writing. First, the content component with an average score 20.1 or including fair criteria, second, the organization component with an average score 15.8 or including good criteria, third, the vocabulary component with an average score 13.3 or including fair criteria, fourth, the language use component with an average score 15.6 or including fair criteria, and lastly, mechanics component with an average score 4.3 or including good criteria. From the result of the data, only 2 components were classified into good criteria and there are 3 components under the good criteria. This is proven based on the students’ level of difficulty in writing descriptive text. Lastly, the result of data analysis of students’ ability in writing descriptive text at the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Teluk Dalam was categorized in fair.

Abstract

The present research uses a qualitative descriptive approach to explore the meanings and experiences of nostalgia contained in the lyrics of the song High School in Jakarta. The research data consists of the song lyrics as the primary data source. Data collection techniques include observation of the lyrics by noting relevant sections, literature review to understand the cultural context, and systematic text analysis. The data analysis process is conducted through three stages. First, a denotative analysis that examines the concrete elements in the lyrics, such as names, places, and events that reflect adolescent experiences. Second, a connotative analysis that delves into the emotions and deeper meanings behind the words used. Third, a myth analysis that identifies cultural myths present in the lyrics, such as societal views on adolescence and the role of social relationships in identity formation. The research findings indicate that this song serves as a reflective tool for listeners regarding adolescence, as well as how nostalgia is formed through lyrics rich in meaning and cultural context. In conclusion, semiotic analysis provides a deeper understanding of nostalgia as a strong emotional response rooted in the complexities of adolescence.

Abstract

This research was designed in descriptive qualitative research. The aims of the research were to find out direct and indirect speech act and the contextual meaning in Oprah Winfrey’s Motivational Speech “Life Advice Will Change Your Future”. In collecting the data, the researcher used content Analysis technique. The researcher used Miles and Huberman theory in analyzing the data. In doing the research, the theory of Finegan is used. Finegan stated that there were two types of speech act, direct and indirect speech act and it can be in the form of representatives, commissives, directives, declarations, expressives and verdictives. The result shows that there were found 30 expression of direct speech act and 26 expression of indirect speech act. Therefore, speech act can be found in many discourses and daily life conversation. The researcher expected that this research will be useful for teacher, students, and the next researcher who are going to do related research.

Abstract

This research was carried out to investigate the idiom in the song lyrics of Ariana Grande’s “My Everything” album. The objectives of this research were to find out the types of idioms and to describe the meaning of idioms found in the song lyrics of Ariana Grande’s “My Everything” album. This research was designed to qualitative research. The researcher collected and classified the data in seven types of idioms suggested by O’Dell & McCarthy and after obtaining the data, the researcher analyzed the data by applying data reduction, data display, drawing conclusion and verification. The result of this research showed that there were various idioms found in the song lyrics of Ariana Grande’s “My Everything” album such as similes, binomials, proverbs, euphemisms, cliché, fixed statements and other language. Each of idioms has their own meaning and they were interpreted based on their context in using them. Idioms obviously most found in the song and it really helps people to enrich their vocabularies and expand their understanding about all expressions in English. The researcher suggested to the students to read this thesis to be able know the context of idioms and also interpret the meaning of idioms. Morever, the researcher also suggested to the other researcher to complete the further research better and provide more explanation and also they can use this research as their reference.

Abstract

This research aimed at analyzing students’ motivation at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 3 Dharma Caraka. This research was designed by using descriptive qualitative method. In analyzing the data, the researcher used theory of Gay (2012), they were reading and memoing, describing, and classifying. In this research, the source of the data was taken from 24 students at the Eighth Grade of SMP Negeri 3 Dharma Caraka. Technique of the data collection were observation and interview. The result of the research showed that they were experienced by eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Dharma Caraka by intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The intrinsic motivations were self desire, satisfaction, challenge/competition, and good habits. The extrinsic motivations were praise, advice, teacher, parents and environment, and reward. The students who had intrinsic motivations were active in speaking activity because they derived from themselves. It reflects the internal drive to achieve personal goals, serving as primary motivator for success. Meanwhile, the students who had extrinsic motivation were active in speaking because they have expectation to get high score, and other reward from the teacher, and praise from the teacher and friends. But, most of students are motivated in extrinsic motivations, they were active in speaking activity because from the environment and other reward. It is suggested to English teacher to create a good atmosphere while teaching in the classroom especially in speaking English. Moreover, teacher need to motivate their students by designing activities that are interesting and relevant to daily life that encourage interaction and conversation.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the types and the meaning of phrasal verb in the album “Justice” by Justin Bieber. The researcher used qualitative method as metodology and descriptive qualitative as approach. In analyzing the data, the researcher used theory of Miles et al, therewere data condensation, data display, drawing and verifying conclusion. The source of the data was taken from the album “Justice” by Justin Bieber. Based on the results, there are two types of phrasal verbs that the researcher found, namely: transitive and intransitive phrasal verbs. Transitive phrasal verbs divided into two types are: Separable and Inseparable. There were 38 data of phrasal verbs, the most common phrasal verb were inseparable 22, separable 6, and intransitive 10. And also the researcher found the meaning semantically from phrasal verbs that contain in the album “Justice” by Justin Bieber. Based on the results of the analysis conducted by the researcher, the researcher concluded that there were a lot of phrasal verbs that contain the song lyrics of the album “Justice” by Justin Bieber and the use of phrasal verb in the album “Justice” by Justin Bieber is added the knowledge about the vocabulary of the phrasal verbs.
