Abstract

Local wisdom plays a vital role in preserving cultural identity, fostering social harmony, and strengthening a community’s sense of belonging. Within the educational context, integrating local wisdom into learning activities creates meaningful connections between theoretical knowledge and the cultural realities experienced by students in their daily lives. This approach not only promotes contextual learning but also nurtures students’ appreciation of their heritage. This article explores the incorporation of Nias local wisdom into the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model as a strategy to enhance both academic achievement and character formation. The Nias community possesses rich traditions, social values, and problem-solving practices rooted in cooperation, respect, and responsibility. By embedding these elements into the PBL framework, students are encouraged to engage in authentic learning experiences that mirror real-life challenges while reflecting their cultural identity. The findings show that the integration of Nias local wisdom within PBL significantly improves students’ cognitive, affective, and social competencies. Students demonstrate increased motivation, collaboration, and critical thinking, while also developing empathy and respect for cultural diversity. Moreover, this approach enriches the learning environment by linking education to the community’s cultural context. Consequently, the application of local wisdom in education not only produces academically competent learners but also individuals who are culturally grounded and socially responsible.

Abstract

This study examined the use of proclitics and enclitics in West Nias language from a morphosyntactic perspective. Using a descriptive qualitative approach supported by elicited linguistic data from native speakers, the analysis demonstrated that cliticization in West Nias was not merely a phonological attachment but also played an essential grammatical role in sentence structure. The results of this study indicated that the types of clitics found in West Nias language consist of proclitics, which attach to the beginning of a host word, and enclitics, which attach to the end of a host word. The proclitic forms identified in this language are a-, i-, ta-, ba-, ö-, u-, la-, and mi-o-, while the enclitic forms identified are -gu, -mö, -ma, -mi, -ra, and -nia. In West Nias, proclitics function as pronominal markers that indicate the actor and primarily attach to verbs, as well as to preverbal elements such as modals and certain prepositions. Enclitics attach to nouns to mark possession, and may also occur on verbs, adjectives, and adverbs when these elements function as the predicate. Therefore, proclitics in West Nias are pronominal because their presence corresponds with the subject of the clause.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the types of figurative language found in four song lyrics by Nadin Amizah, namely "Beranjak Dewasa," "Kanyah," "Taru," and "Cermin." The study employs a qualitative descriptive method, with the song lyrics serving as the primary source of data. The analysis identifies seven types of figurative language used across the four songs, including simile, metaphor, personification, paradox, hyperbole, repetition, and symbolism. The findings reveal that Nadin Amizah consistently employs figurative language not merely as a stylistic device, but as the primary means of conveying deeply personal and emotional themes. Each song explores a distinct yet interconnected aspect of human experience, ranging from the pain of growing up, unconditional love, fear of romantic relationships, to the silent struggle of performing strength for others. The study concludes that Nadin Amizah's lyrics possess significant literary depth and merit serious academic attention.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the connotative meanings found in the speech delivered by Donald Trump at the Board of Peace meeting. The objective of this research is to identify and explain words and phrases that contain connotative meanings in the speech. This study uses a qualitative research design because it focuses on interpreting meanings embedded in language rather than numerical data. The data of this research were taken from the transcript of Donald Trump’s speech obtained from a video published on the YouTube channel of Kompas TV entitled “Pidato Trump di Board of Peace: Gaza, Perdamaian, dan Kepemimpinan Global” with the hashtag #boardofpeace. The data were collected using the documentation method by identifying words and phrases that potentially contain connotative meanings. The data were analyzed using the theory of connotative meaning proposed by Geoffrey Leech. The findings of this research show that there are 27 expressions containing connotative meanings in the speech. These expressions are used to emphasize important messages, strengthen persuasive communication, and highlight themes such as leadership, diplomacy, cooperation, and peace. The study concludes that connotative meaning plays an important role in political speeches because it helps convey deeper messages and influence audience perception.

Abstract

This study seeks to investigate the readiness of English teachers and the obstacles they face in adopting Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) in rural areas of Mandrehe Utara Sub-district, West Nias Regency, North Sumatra. Using a qualitative research design grounded in a phenomenological approach, data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews, non-participant classroom observations, and document analysis involving eight English teachers from five different schools. The results indicate that teachers’ readiness falls within low to moderate levels. While attitudinal readiness appears relatively favourable, both knowledge-based and practical readiness remain notably limited. The study further identifies four major challenges: inadequate technological infrastructure, limited digital literacy among teachers, a lack of sufficient institutional support, and pedagogical issues related to classroom management. Based on these findings, the study suggests the need to prioritise the improvement of digital infrastructure, provide context-sensitive professional development, and formulate school policies that clearly encourage the integration of mobile technology into English language instruction in remote rural contexts.

Abstract

This study investigates the urgency of utilizing the Nias language in primary education in South Nias as a form of cultural heritage preservation. The research aims to examine how the integration of the Nias language into classroom instruction contributes to students’ understanding, cultural identity, and engagement in learning. A qualitative descriptive method was employed through interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis involving teachers, students, and community members. The findings reveal that the use of the Nias language in learning activities enhances students’ comprehension of instructional content, especially in early grades, as it bridges the gap between school knowledge and students’ daily experiences. In addition, the integration of local language strengthens students’ cultural awareness and pride in their heritage. The study also shows that students become more active, confident, and motivated when learning is delivered using their mother tongue alongside Indonesian. However, challenges such as limited teaching materials and lack of structured policy support still exist. Despite these challenges, the findings emphasize that the Nias language plays a crucial role in both improving educational effectiveness and preserving cultural identity. Therefore, the utilization of the Nias language in primary education is highly urgent and should be systematically supported to ensure sustainable cultural heritage preservation in South Nias.

Abstract

The present research investigates the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) needs of front office staff at Neo Bintang Hotel, Sanur, Denpasar, Bali. Employing a qualitative descriptive case study approach, the research involved four front office staff members as primary participants, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, non-participant observation, and documentation analysis, and analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The findings reveal three interconnected dimensions of ESP needs. First, in terms of target situation needs, front office staff are required to perform specific communicative tasks including greeting guests, managing reservations, handling complaints, and providing tourist information. Second, regarding present situation needs, a significant gap exists between the staff's current English proficiency and the communicative demands of their professional roles, particularly in speaking and writing skills. Third, concerning learning needs, participants expressed a strong preference for practical, task-based, and authentic hospitality materials. These findings underscore the urgent need for a targeted ESP program tailored to the specific communicative context of hotel front office work.

Abstract

This study investigates the distribution of language skills in English for Nusantara, an EFL textbook published by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture for Grade VIII students at the junior secondary level (SMP/MTs). Employing a mixed-method design, the study quantifies the frequency of listening, speaking, reading, viewing, and writing activities across the five chapters and fifteen units of the textbook, and proposes adaptive pedagogical strategies for teachers to address observed skill gaps. The quantitative findings reveal a notable imbalance: reading dominates at 36.4% of all skill-labeled sections, while speaking, writing, and viewing each account for approximately 11-14%, despite being explicitly mandated competencies under the Kurikulum Merdeka. Listening receives moderate coverage at 27.3% but is heavily concentrated in Unit 1 of each chapter. The qualitative phase presents close analyses of selected textbook activities and proposes five practical modifications integrating underrepresented skills without disrupting thematic coherence. While grounded in the Indonesian EFL context, the analytical framework and proposed solutions offer transferable insights for curriculum designers and classroom teachers working with comparable secondary-level EFL materials in other settings.
