Abstract

This study aims to describe the translation of garment steamer parts terms from English to Indonesian in the user manual. The method used is descriptive qualitative, with data consisting of technical terms related to the parts of the device, both in single words and phrases. The data source is the Philips EasyTouch Plus Garment Steamer user manual, models GC514, GC518, and GC524. The data collection technique employed is the listening and note-taking technique, where the researcher carefully reads the entire text of the manual to identify and record relevant terms. The data analysis follows the interactive model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study show the application of five translation techniques: two single techniques (Compensation and Established Equivalent), and three combined techniques (Compensation + Transposition, Compensation + Borrowing, and Compensation + Established Equivalent). The Compensation technique is the most dominant, appearing 6 times, followed by Established Equivalent with 5 occurrences. These findings indicate that Compensation is frequently used to address linguistic differences between the source and target texts. This study implies that understanding the appropriate translation techniques is crucial for producing translations that are accurate and easily understood.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of the English language in promoting the local wisdom of Nias, specifically the Hombo Batu tradition, to the international stage. Hombo Batu, which symbolizes bravery and physical strength in Nias society, has the potential to become a globally recognized cultural attraction. English, as a global lingua franca, plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between local culture and international audiences. Through social media, international festivals, and tourism websites, English is used to introduce the meaning and values embedded in Hombo Batu. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data collection techniques including literature review, digital media observation, and semi-structured interviews with cultural practitioners, academics, and tourism managers. The findings of this study show that, while the use of English is highly effective, challenges in maintaining cultural integrity remain. The research concludes that, despite the effectiveness of English in introducing Hombo Batu, there is a need for enhanced translation quality and collaboration between cultural experts and communication professionals to ensure that traditional values are preserved when presented to the international audience. Additionally, empowering the younger generation of Nias to promote their culture is essential.

Abstract

The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed academic writing, especially among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students. While tools like ChatGPT, QuillBot, and Grammarly support language learning, their misuse has led to increased academic dishonesty. This study investigates how AI contributes to such dishonesty and explores institutional strategies to address it. Using a qualitative descriptive approach through desk research, the study reviews literature from academic sources. Findings show that dishonesty occurs both intentionally and unintentionally, often due to low AI literacy and lack of ethical guidelines. Students tend to overuse AI for paraphrasing, grammar checks, or full-text creation, reducing critical thinking and engagement. In response, institutions are advised to implement AI policies, promote AI literacy, apply process-based assessment, and train lecturers in ethical AI use. These measures aim to uphold academic integrity and ensure AI enhances learning.
