Abstract

This qualitative study aims to investigate the use of media in English class based on the students’ reflection at one of vocational schools in Kendari. Three kinds of instruments used in study are observation sheet, journal reflection, and documentation sheet gathered from 34 students. The result of the study reveals that the students respond positively to the use of teaching media in English class. The students also find out the use of teaching media in English class is beneficial to them. One of the benefits is it can help improve students understanding of the material delivered by the English teacher in the classroom. This implies that the use of media in the English class should be encouraged in order to improve the students’ motivation in learning English and the students can understand the material easily when the teacher explains the material in the classroom.Keywords: Media use; reflection journal.

Abstract

This qualitative study aims to identify students’ response to learners’ beliefs about pronunciation skill. The participants of this study consist of 35 students from the students of Pronunciation class in an institution, class A and B in the second semester of the academic year of 2019/2020. The qualitative data were analyzed by questionnaire. This study focuses on students’ beliefs in learning pronunciation. The result shows that students have four beliefs in learning pronunciation that is beliefs on learning process, learning pronunciation, strategy used in learning pronunciation, and the solution and importance of pronunciation. This will provide information to lecturers and universities to take advantage of beliefs in learning pronunciation.Keywords: importance of pronunciation; learning pronunciation; students’ beliefs

Abstract

This study investigates the EFL students' perception on Strengths and weaknesses of group working in project-based learning. This implements qualitative research of study. Data were collected using reflections, which were distributed to 15 students of the fifth semester at the English Education Study Program in higher education at Kendari as participant. The finding showed that there were strengthen and weaknesses in implementing group work on PBL. Some strengthen on group work do PBL are brainstorming ideas, providing easier learning, and understanding material, practicing cooperation skills, sharing the task inside team and developing responsibilities. Meanwhile, for the weaknesses of group work on PBL namely the students’ feel their group member was incohesive team these included of lack unity and think of themselves, difficulties to set time, uneven assigment, and misunderstanding in the discussion group. This study implies the lecturer or prospective teacher should have some considerations when they want to use group work activities in the class.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to determine to what extent the Photovoice method can build students’ confidence in facing public speaking anxiety. In this study, Photovoice was able to help students toward speaking in many aspects such as, enthusiasm improvement, eye contact and body language adeptness, critical thinking and also fluency. Speaking skill is essential in language learning and teaching process because the goal of learning as foreign language is able to communicate using the target language. However, most of EFL students tend to be more nervous if they speak English, and this will impact their other proficiencies. This case study involved approximately 2 students at second grade of language major of MAN 1 Kendari. To collect the data from the research, there were three kinds of instruments such as, rubric of public speaking to measure the level of students’ self-confidence, classroom observation and students’ reflection. The result can be seen through students’ marking scheme that showed both participants getting score 47 and 72 at the first performance, 71 and 80 at the second one, 100 and 100 at the last one and students’ reflection that indicate S1 and S2 have been influenced positively in terms of their self-confidence by using Photovoice. From classroom observation side, students’ improvements were seen by teaching activities and video recorder that was taken during research.

Abstract

                                                       This study aims to investigate students’ preferences on the use of Schoology and Google Classroom as online platform in EFL classroom. The participants of this study consist of 20 students. The research method uses a qualitative approach with descriptive data analysis technique. The qualitative data obtained by administering questionnaire and students’ reflection based on learnability, visual design, and satisfaction category were analyzed qualitatively. Learnabilty revealed that Google Classroom is the easiest platform for student to use compared to Schoology, while in terms of visual design, it revealed that Google Classroom is more attractive design than Schoology as a result, in the level of satisfaction, students were more satisfied with the features of Google Classroom than the features of Schoology.Keywords: EFL Students, E-learning, Google Classroom, Schoology

Abstract

In frame of qualitative research, this study is aimed to analyze the kinds of teacher’s nonverbal communication used in ELT classroom which delimited on kinesics. The participant is one lecturer in South Sulawesi (Indonesia). Data is collected through observation and video recording and analyzed by using Ekman's (1969) nonverbal communication theory. The result of the research show that the teacher used nonverbal communication type kinesics such as using emblem, illustrators, effect display, regulators, and adaptors. Nonverbal communication type of kinesics that most frequently used by the teacher is illustrators, regulators, and emblems. In conclusion, the teacher used all of kind’s nonverbal communication on kinesics and applied them in teaching and learning process.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate students’ perceptions towards the use of Schoology platform in Foreign Language Teaching Media class. The participants of this study consist of 26 students from the students of Foreign Language Teaching Media class A in the fifth semester of the academic year 2019/2020. The qualitative data were analyzed by students’ reflection. The results of the research revealed that the students’ responded positively to the use of Schoology in the Foreign Language Teaching Media Class. The students also find out the use of Schoology in Foreign Language Teaching Media Class beneficial for them. The benefits of Schoology is it can help students to access the material or tasks easily and they can send assignments whenever and wherever. The use of Schoology in the classroom still has a weakness that are network connection and need quota. This study implies that, the use of Schoology in the  Foreign Language Teaching Media class should be encouraged in order to improve the students’ motivation in learning and the students can understand the material easily when the teacher explains the material in classroom.

Abstract

This study sought to examine the frequency, and sources of writing errors committed by EFL students. To gather the information, 35 students were selected; the students were enrolled in a writing course in the second semester of academic year 2019–2020. They were asked to write three different topics of essays with 100 to 150 words in 40 minutes and requested to make reflection regarding the causes of errors according to their perception. The results of data analysis revealed that capitalization was the common mistake done by students followed by wrong word and punctuation. From students’ perception the causes of errors were 38% grammatical understanding, 21% vocabulary, 17% lack of idea, 13% in rush, 6% less practice and 5% less focus. The researcher believes that the causes of those errors were incomplete knowledge about basic writing and grammatical rules. According to the results, recommendations and any suggestions that are of importance to teachers and policymakers as well as to EFL learners are presented in detail.Keywords: EFL students; error analysis; grammatical error.

Abstract

Because of Covid-19 pandemic, the use of online platform, included Zoom meeting, in EFL classroom facilitating the learning process is gaining ground. As the students are widely involved in the use of this platform, it is essential to investigate the students’ experience in using the platform. Using questionnaire and reflection, the data were collected from seventeen English Education Department students, and analyzed qualitatively based on the intrinsic pleasantness, novelty, goal/need significance, coping potential, and norm/self-compatibility. The study indicates that the students experienced the benefits of the platform in learning such as it can help them to learn and resemble the real class, its various interesting features enables us to record and save videos during the meeting, to use the filter, to schedule online meetings, to facilitate clear presentations like displaying power points, to use a video call. However, most of the students sometimes need to cope with the unstable network which is one of the requirements to use Zoom meeting. Therefore, this study implies that Zoom meeting can be a good alternative to change the teaching and learning process in real classroom during Covid-19 outbreak.  Keywords: COVID-19; Learners’ experience; Zoom platform.

Abstract

This case study aims to discover teachers' practices for teaching second-grade reading comprehension at one of Kendari's Islamic state senior high schools. Using depth-interviews with two EFL teachers, the researchers scrutinized teachers' various strategies as best practices in teaching reading. Two teachers from one of Kendari's state Islamic senior high schools took part in this study. The findings of this study were based on the reading tactics utilized in class. The teacher employed pre-reading strategy training, asking students to check their memory of the text and having a brief conversation about the text's title. Also, the teacher employed calculative vocabulary, allowing the students to acquire skills for predicting word meanings based on context and prior knowledge. As for reading comprehension, the teacher engaged the class to read aloud and discuss how they understand what is written, observing students who asked questions about complex vocabulary during reading instruction and directing students to learn difficult vocabulary. Meanwhile, students' challenge in reading class requires more vocabulary and enthusiasm.Keywords: reading class; reading comprehension; teaching reading strategy.
