Abstract

Plastic waste, which is difficult to decompose, poses a significant environmental hazard. This study aims to analyze the effect of filter diameter on shredding outcomes of a 250 kg/hour plastic shredding machine. Experimental methods were used with HDPE and PP plastics and filter diameters of 16 mm and 20 mm. Results showed that the 16 mm filter yielded better efficiency for HDPE at 82.08%, while the 20 mm filter achieved the highest efficiency at 167.4% for HDPE. For PP, the 20 mm filter yielded the highest efficiency at 44.88%. The findings highlight that filter diameter significantly affects machine performance, with optimal results observed with the 20 mm filter for HDPE.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate and analyze the performance of cooling water in a small-scale Gamma-type Stirling engine. The research method employed was an experimental approach. The test results show that the inlet water temperature was 27.6 °C, while the average outlet water temperature reached 92.33 °C after 60 minutes of testing. Cooling water with an inlet temperature of 27.6 °C reduced the average heat source temperature from 484.51 °C to 64.78 °C on the compression chamber side. At an airflow rate of 0.006 m³/s, the average cooling effectiveness was recorded at 13%, with the highest value of 19.1% observed at the 55th minute of testing. This study concludes that cooling water effectively reduces the heat source temperature and improves thermal efficiency in a small-scale Gamma-type Stirling engine.

Abstract

This research was conducted at PT. Hutahaean will analyze the causes of unstable blade rotational speed due to speed droop during the sweet potato chopping process at the cutting station. The cutting machine has eight blades to chop sweet potatoes into smaller pieces before further processing. Observations revealed several key factors causing the instability in blade speed, including electrical voltage fluctuations, wear on the drive motor, improper calibration, and debris buildup around machine components. The calculation results showed that the speed droop in blade rotation reached 5%, contributing to decreased production efficiency. Routine maintenance of machine components and adjustment of settings are recommended to address these issues.

Abstract

The design and manufacturing of a heater for a Gamma-type Stirling engine on a small scale require careful consideration of key factors to ensure thermal efficiency and optimal performance. This study utilized AutoCAD software to design the heater precisely according to operational requirements. The heater functions as a critical component that transfers heat from the source to the working fluid positioned at the front of the Stirling engine. The manufacturing process employed carbon steel, chosen for its ability to withstand high temperatures and ensure even heat distribution. Test results demonstrated that the manufactured heater could achieve an average temperature of 484.50 °C, reflecting its stability and optimal heat distribution during operation. This stability is a crucial indicator of the heater's thermal efficiency and reliability in supporting the Stirling engine's performance. The study confirms that the applied design process, material selection, and manufacturing techniques successfully produced a heater that meets the design specifications. Thus, this research significantly contributes to developing heater technology for small-scale Stirling engine applications.

Abstract

This study discusses the effect of feed rate and machine rotation speed on the surface roughness of ST 41 steel in the flat turning process. The aim is to determine the relationship between variations in rotation speed (100 rpm, 300 rpm, and 500 rpm) and feed rate on the final surface results of the workpiece. The method involves cutting tests on ST 41 steel specimens with a diameter of 25 mm and a length of 400 mm with various rotation speed variations. The results show that at low rotation speed (100 rpm), the surface of the workpiece tends to be rough. The surface becomes better at medium speed (300 rpm), while at high speed (500 rpm), the surface results are smoother. These findings indicate that increasing rotation speed contributes to a decrease in surface roughness. Thus, higher rotation speeds can improve the quality of turning results.

Abstract

Making billiard sticks is a production process that requires high precision to produce quality products. This research aims to analyze the comparative performance of various cutting tools in the turning process for making billiard sticks. Proper cutting tools are essential in the pool cue manufacturing industry to achieve precise and quality results. This research uses two types of processes: the turning and the routing machine processes. The turning process is carried out on rosewood/snorkelling (Dalbergia latifolia) woodworkpieces, which will be used as billiard sticks. This research aims to evaluate dimensional accuracy and production process time. The turning process is carried out by varying the cutting speed parameters and feed depth. This research focuses on optimizing lathes' use to produce stick dimensions that comply with international standards. The study showed that turning tapered wood in a lathe to make billiard sticks took longer (376.2 seconds) than using a router machine (225.6 seconds).

Abstract

This research discusses the replacement of a broken motor shaft due to overload as a Corrective Maintenance action on the separator unit at PT. Hutahaean, Tapioca Factory. The objective of this research is to understand the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for replacing a broken motor shaft and to apply preventive steps to avoid further damage to the electric motor in the separator unit. The electric motor plays a crucial role in driving the separator machine, especially in the separation process of tapioca starch. Overloading led to the breakage of the motor shaft, disrupting the production flow. This study demonstrates that effective Corrective Maintenance can restore the machine's optimal function and reduce production downtime. The findings also highlight the importance of routine maintenance of machine components to prevent future severe damages.

The method employed involves designing modelling using SolidWorks software and collecting data on the machine's design specifications. The results indicate that (1) the critical load capacity of the hollow steel frame reaches 4019.23 kN, (2) the spring pressure is 100,000 Pa, (3) the jack pressure is 5.3 MPa, (4) the electrical power consumption of the hot press machine is 2.22 kW, and (5) the electrical power for 10 cartridge heaters is 1,472.42 Watts. The mould pressure is 2.20 kN with a surface area of 4.16 cm², a plastic sheet thickness of 10 mm, and a 950 kg/m³ density. In conclusion, the machine frame dimensions are 600 mm x 600 mm x 1200 mm, utilizing 40 mm x 40 mm hollow steel profiles. Safety evaluations emphasize the importance of using personal protective equipment (PPE), adhering to operational procedures, and preparing for emergencies.

Abstract

This research aims to provide a detailed guideline for the replacement process of superheater tubes in the Takuma Boiler N-900 R. The superheater tube is a critical component in a boiler that increases the temperature of the steam exiting the boiler to achieve higher temperatures. Superheaters have been utilized since the early 20th century, coinciding with the initial use of steam engines. The research employed direct observation to analyze the causes of failure in the superheater tubes. The primary objective is to present the necessary processes and steps for replacing superheater tubes. The findings indicate that the primary cause of failure in the superheater tubes is overheating, necessitating their replacement. The replacement process involves several stages, including disassembling old superheater tubes, installing new ones, and testing hydrostatic and steam. The results of this replacement process show improved efficiency in the superheater and prevention of further failures in the superheater tubes.

Abstract

The weight of a car's parts can be reduced by using materials such as aluminum. The lower arm is the main component of the suspension system, usually found at the front of the suspension in both Macpherson and Double Wishbone systems. There are AA6061 and malleable cast iron materials, where AA6061 is made from aluminum alloy, and the malleable cast iron material is made from steel alloy. Both are different in terms of material but almost similar in terms of material properties. The research method uses FEM assisted by Solidworks software and looks at the loading, stress and strain. The results of the research were that the material from AA6061 was better but more expensive if made in smaller quantities.
