Abstract

Rhythmic gymnastics is a fun and effective form of physical activity to stimulate gross motor development in preschool children. Well-developed gross motor skills are essential to support physical activity, movement coordination, and readiness for further learning. A preliminary study at Kartini Kindergarten, Gorontalo Regency, showed that several children experienced difficulties in performing basic movements such as jumping, maintaining balance, and following rhythmic movements properly. This study aimed to determine the relationship between participation in rhythmic gymnastics and gross motor skills among preschool children at Kartini Kindergarten, Gorontalo Regency. This study employed a quantitative descriptive and analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. The population consisted of all preschool children at Kartini Kindergarten, and total sampling was applied, resulting in 67 respondents. Data were collected using structured observation sheets and analyzed using the Spearman correlation test. The results indicated a strong and significant positive relationship between rhythmic gymnastics participation and gross motor skills (p-value = 0.000; r = 0.672). The study concludes that higher participation in rhythmic gymnastics is associated with better gross motor skills in preschool children. Rhythmic gymnastics is recommended to be implemented regularly and systematically as part of early childhood education programs to optimize children’s gross motor development.

Abstract

Background: Hernia is a medical condition in which part of an internal organ, especially the intestine, protrudes through a weakened section of the abdominal wall. The primary treatment is surgery; however, postoperative recovery is often accompanied by acute pain, which can hinder the healing process. One safe and simple non-pharmacological intervention is deep breathing relaxation therapy. Objective: This study aims to determine the management of two patients with hernia whose primary problem was acute pain, and to evaluate the effectiveness of deep breathing relaxation therapy in reducing pain intensity. Methods: This research employed an explanatory case study design by implementing Evidence-Based Practice (EBP). The sample consisted of two patients with the same medical diagnosis of inguinal hernia. Samples were selected using purposive sampling based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data collection techniques included interviews, physical examinations, and document reviews. Results: The study found that after the implementation of routine deep breathing relaxation therapy for three days, Patient 1’s acute pain was alleviated, with a pain scale reduction from 5 (moderate) to 3 (mild). Patient 2 experienced a reduction from 4 (moderate) to 3 (mild). Additional problems such as anxiety, sleep pattern disturbances, and risk of infection were also resolved. Besides reducing pain, this technique helped decrease anxiety and improve patient comfort. Conclusion: Deep breathing relaxation therapy is an effective and safe non-pharmacological nursing intervention to reduce acute pain in hernia patients. This technique is recommended as a complementary approach in nursing pain management in hospital settings.

Abstract

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that requires continuous self-management. Poor disease management may negatively affect patients’ quality of life. Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) is an educational intervention designed to improve patients’ ability to manage their condition independently. This study aimed to examine the effect of DSME on the quality of life of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach. A total of 15 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were recruited using purposive sampling. Quality of life was measured using the Diabetes Quality of Life questionnaire before and after the intervention. The DSME program was delivered in groups through six sessions covering the basic concept of diabetes, symptom management, physical activity, dietary management, medication use, access to health services, and program evaluation. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results: The findings showed an improvement in quality-of-life scores after the DSME program. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test indicated a significant difference in quality of life before and after the intervention, with a p-value of 0.002. Conclusion: The DSME program improved the quality of life of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. DSME may be considered an educational intervention in community nursing and primary care settings.

Abstract

Background: Digital transformation in hospitals requires nurses to possess informatics competency to support patient safety and high-quality documentation. Objective: To describe nurses’ informatics competency in hospitals using the Self-Assessment of Nursing Informatics Competencies Scale (SANICS).. Methods: A cross-sectional survey with univariate analysis was conducted using secondary data from 220 nurses. SANICS includes 30 items (total score 30–150; higher scores indicate better competency) across five subscales. Analyses included descriptive statistics and internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha). Results: The mean total SANICS score was 87.98 (SD 19.57). The overall mean per item was 2.93 (scale 1–5), suggesting a moderate level of competency. The lowest subscale mean per item was Applied computer skills: clinical informatics (ACS) (2.60), while the highest was Basic computer knowledge and skills (BCKS) (3.03). Internal consistency of SANICS was excellent (alpha 0.971). Conclusion: These findings highlight the need to strengthen applied clinical informatics skills through continuing training, unit-based mentoring, and organizational support to enhance the integration of information systems into nursing practice.

Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a chronic health problem that requires family involvement in its control and care. Families play an important role in identifying health problems, making health-related decisions, caring for sick family members, modifying the environment, and utilizing health care services. Objective: This paper aimed to describe the implementation of family nursing care for family members with hypertension. Methods: This study used a descriptive method with a case study approach involving two families with family members diagnosed with hypertension. Family nursing care was provided over one week through three home visits. Data were collected through interviews, observation, physical examination, and family assessment. Results: The assessment findings indicated family nursing problems related to hypertension health management. After three nursing visits, both families showed positive progress; however, the nursing problems were not fully resolved. The nursing diagnoses in both families were partially resolved. Conclusion: The implementation of family nursing care for family members with hypertension improved the families’ understanding and ability to care for family members with hypertension. However, the evaluation showed that the nursing problems were only partially resolved. Therefore, a longer period of family nursing assistance is needed to support more comprehensive assessment, more optimal interventions, and sustainable health behavior changes within the family.

Abstract

Background: Appendectomy involves surgical incision and tissue injury, which may cause postoperative pain. In addition to pain, patients undergoing appendectomy are at risk of infection and impaired physical mobility due to pain and concerns regarding the surgical wound. Objective: To describe the implementation of pain management, infection prevention, and early mobilization in post-appendectomy patients at the third floor of Bhayangkara Brimob Hospital. Methods: This study used a descriptive design with a case study approach involving two post-appendectomy patients, Mrs. R and Ms. B. Data were collected through interviews, observation, physical examination, and nursing documentation. Nursing care was provided for 3 × 24 hours through assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Results: The nursing diagnoses identified in both patients were acute pain, risk for infection, and impaired physical mobility. The interventions included pain management using deep-breathing relaxation techniques, infection prevention through wound monitoring and hygiene education, and gradual early mobilization. After 3 × 24 hours, Mrs. R’s pain score decreased from 6 to 3, while Ms. B’s pain score decreased from 5 to 2. No signs of infection were observed in either patient, and both patients demonstrated improved mobility, including the ability to walk to the bathroom independently. Conclusion: The implementation of pain management, infection prevention, and early mobilization for 3 × 24 hours produced positive outcomes in both post-appendectomy patients. All three nursing problems were resolved, and nursing interventions were discontinued when the patients were discharged. Keywords: acute pain; appendectomy; case study; impaired physical mobility; risk for infection
