Abstract

In the face of the rapid expansion of prayer groups, the question arises as to the spiritual identity of this phenomenon. How far are they authentic or perhaps even heretical? This essay studied such a prayer group and aims to answer the question – authentic or heretical? - in the light of the official teaching of the Catholic Church concerning devotion and religious practices. Through such a study people should not be too quick to classify such groups as marginal or even un-Catholic, or conversely, too easily defend and justify their existence and practice. Prayer groups can offer “grace” but also potentially insert a “curse” into the life of their adherents. That is why church authority needs to be seriously concerned with such developments. If guided adequately, prayer groups can offer much to the development of the peoples’ faith. Conversely, if they are not correctly guided, prayer groups can potentially lead people up the wrong path. This empirical study helps us to evaluate such groups critically. Keywords: kelompok doa, hamba Tuhan, ilham, devosi, kesalehan umat, praktek penyembuhan, kesaksian, otoritas gerejani.

Abstract

Zen is a way of understanding our true self as human before any concept is produced by the thinking mind. This true self can be perceived, when we let go all of forms of concepts and abstractions, and move to the realm of intuition. In this sense, intuition is direct experience of reality without the mediation of any kind of concepts or abstractions. The Zen tradition offers two ways to help people achieve this state of mind, namely Zazen (sitting meditation) and Koan (interview with the Zen Master). The awareness of the true self, or intuition, can be seen also as the state of enlightenment. This is the true freedom. This paper examins Zazen and Koan practices in the Zen tradition critically, and looks at how both can contribute to the development of human life. Abstract

Business is a social entity which inevitably effects the quality of human life. Its success in supporting human life in general and, particularly, the long-term economic prospects it aims to achieve, require the real commitment of its agents to take moral values seriously in doing business. Instead of moral minimalism, a good and healthy business necessitates every businessman/woman to act beyond economic and legal interests to embrace “the genius of AND” as the ideal approach in doing business. Real commitment on seriously taking into account moral considerations in the process of business decision-making would in turn, in the long term, bring greater economic opportunities and, hence, enhance the prospect of business. At the centre of a good and healthy business is its agents’ commitment on taking all stakeholders’ interests to be their own. Doing justice to all stakeholders and to the public at large is, therefore, the life-blood of good and healthy businesses. A moral culture in business requires moral models to flourish and be shared commonly among all business agents. Kata-kata kunci: Tanggung jawab ekonomi; tanggung jawab hukum; tanggung jawab moral; intangible values; stakeholders; model moral.

Abstract

Pada umumnya boleh dikatakan, ada dua perspektif dalam memahami etika, cabang filsafat yang merefleksikan tentang tingkah laku manusia. Perspektif pertama memberi penekanan pada kualitas hidup atau watak pelaku, sedangkan yang kedua lebih memberi perhatian pada norma-norma bertingkah laku. Pertanyaan penting bagi perspektif pertama adalah ‘Manusia macam apa aku harus menjadi?’, sementara bagi yang kedua, ‘Apa saja norma-norma yang harus kuturuti agar tindakanku baik secara moral?’. Bila kualitas hidup moral pelaku dijadikan sebagai pusat refleksi kita berkutat dengan etika keutamaan (aretaic ethics atau virtue ethics), dengan pendukung dan pembela utamanya adalah Aristoteles and Thomas Aquinas, sementara etika yang bertumpu pada normanorma dikenal sebagai etika kewajiban (deontic ethics atau the ethic of duty) dibela terutama oleh Immanuel Kant. Tulisan ini akan membahas pandangan Aristoteles dan Thomas Aquinas tentang keutamaan. Kata-kata Kunci: Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas, Thomistic synthesis of the Aristotelian philosophy and the Augustinian theology, habits, human virtues and theological virtues.

Abstract

Seorang kenalan yang mengidap infeksi HIV pernah berkata,“Berstatus positif saya terima selaku berkat, berkat dari Tuhan yang paling baik bagi saya!” Bisakah, seorang penyintas HIV menyambut hasil tes positif bagai “berkat paling baik bagi saya”? Bukan bagai kutukan, bukan laksana pedang yang akan menohok dirinya seterusnya, seumur hidup? Tandasnya lagi, “Sebelum saya mengidap HIV saya hidup sembarangan, tapi kini saya hidup serba tertib. Dulu saya hanya ingat diri dan mengejar kenikmatan seketika, kesenangan sesaat, kepuasan sepintas. Kini saya bekerja keras untuk ibuku dan anak-anak kami yang masih kecil, yang sangat membutuhkan kehadiran saya.” Gaya hidupnya serta hasrat jiwanya sudah berbalik 180 derajat. Status positif menjadi berkat bagi dia, lebih lagi bagi istri dan anak-anak mereka.

Abstract

As a social movement, Credit Unions (CU) display the social, economic and cultural strength of little people. In line with contemporary developments and the advance of modern technology, the management of CUs needs to be monitored, evaluated and adapted to the social, economic and political situation that is continually changing. Nevertheless, in the midst of change the values of the CU are perennial and are very much needed in the movement. After looking at the founding and development, strengthens and weaknesses of the CU, this essay advances concrete steps for handling them. Kata-kata kunci: CU, gerakan sosial, kesejahteraan, pembudayaan nilai-nilai, keadilan, kearifan, keberanian, kejujuran dan tanggungjawab, tantangan-tantangan CU.

Abstract

Should we show our obedience more to the state or to the church? Of course, we must always be obedient to God, but this does not mean that such obedience makes us withdraw ourselves from being obedient to social-human institutions, such as a state. It should be noted that the state institution itself is actually a manifestation of our human social nature established by God. In their respective areas, the state and the church are two autonomous entities. However, as public institutions they are related to each other, thus to a certain extent they are not opposed to each other. In line with this view, the Indonesian government issued some regulations on religious teaching and the teaching of religions to be implemented by the community (church). In this case, the government has the obligation to support and assist educational institutions run by the church. Abstract

This paper investigates how Indonesian Catholics living in outlying areas in eastern Indonesia experience fear in relation to the events that have arisen from the massacre of suspected Indonesian communists in 1965. It is concerned with why the Catholic Church created an image of communists as fear-inspiring beings, and how this fear was maintained after the communists had been largely eliminated through the state-sponsored killings of 1965/66. The object of inquiry is a historical document produced in 1967 by the Catholic Church that sought to explain events leading up to 1965. This paper analyses the forces that underlie this fear in terms of the secular fear of communism, the religious fear of Islamic fanaticism, and the supernatural fear of communist ghosts as a result of the killing of communists in 1965. It argues that the fear of 1965 is not a matter of the past but part of the present, an argument that is in accordance with Martin Heidegger’s contention that all fears are concerned with the present. Abstract

The author, a member of the National Commission on Violence against Women, presents data from the Commission on domestic violence and the trafficking of women and girls over the past dozen years (2001-2013). Through false promises of well paying jobs and the provision of false documents, the trafficking victims, often already in debt in their home of origin, are lured into further debt in their distant place of forced employment. Sexual exploitation is never far from physical and emotional violence. Kata-kata Kunci: Komnas Perempuan, korban kekerasan, perdagangan orang, pelaku kekerasan, pemalsuan, perlindungan TKI.

Abstract

Gaudium et Spes is a revolutionary document of Vatican II which can still inspire the Church now and in the future. This document is revolutionary in the sense that it deals with problems, issues and ideas that had never before become the agenda of any Council in the Catholic Church. Gaudium et Spes concretizes what John XXIII named aggiornamento, a process of contextualising the Christian heritage, through which the Church opens itself up to the modern world. This document is also revolutionary because it is entirely a product of the conciliar process of the Council itself. This article presents the process of drafting the document and discusses some issues that are relevant for the Church today and in the future. Kata-kata kunci: proses, Gereja, dunia modern, solidaritas, keadilan ekonomi, martabat manusia, perdamaian.
