Maddah journal is an Islamic communication and counseling journal published by the Faculty of Dakwah, Ibrahimy Situbondo University in collaboration with the Asosiasi Program Studi Komunikasi dan Penyiaran Islam (ASKOPIS). The scope and focus is to distribute the results of field research and concept analysis originating from researchers, academics and educational practitioners. Issue analysis is more focused on Islamic communication and broadcasting. Maddah journals are published twice a year, namely January and July.

Abstract

The development of technology and information that is increasingly developing, presents social media. A number of da'is and da'iyah use Instagram media to spread religious messages. One of the da'iyah who is active in da'wah is Syarifah Halimah Alaydrus. Through the posting of photos/images containing da'wah messages in the form of beautiful words. This study uses a qualitative research method with a semiotic analysis approach of the Charles Sanders Pierce model. With @halimahalydrus Instagram account as the subject of the study. Meanwhile, the object of the research is about the da'wah message on the @halimahalaydrus Instagram account. The results of the analysis of this study show that the da'wah message on the Instagram account post @halimahalaydrus January 18 – February 21, 2024, namely: Maintaining speech and speech, Isra' Mi'raj, a harmonious household, and learning to get the pleasure of Allah Swt.

Abstract

This paper reveals interpersonal communication between kiai and students of Tahfidzul Qur'an at Al-Haromain Islamic Boarding School, Jember. Good interpersonal communication is an important thing that must be done between students and kiai, this is because it is to create effective communication. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study research type. The primary data sources of this study are kiai and students of Tahfidzul Qur'an at AlHaromain Islamic Boarding School, Jember. The secondary data sources are documentation and official archives. The data collection techniques used are observation, interviews, and documentation, and data analysis techniques. The results of this study indicate that the interpersonal communication patterns of kiai and students of Tahfidzul Qur'an are knowing memorization abilities, conducting group communication, providing motivation, being a role model in enthusiasm, using routine media rituals, being open to receiving improvements, always providing support if students have problems, encouragement to memorize consistently, encouragement to struggle to face difficulties in memorizing, communication with respect, communication with polite language and meaningful communication guiding and teaching.

Abstract

This article reveals the concept of Islamic boarding schools towards the clothing of students at the Salafiyah Syafi'iyah Sukorejo Situbondo Islamic Boarding School and the meaning of communication of clothing used by some students that do not meet customary norms. Islamic boarding schools are the oldest educational institutions in Indonesia that still exist and consistently teach and practice Islamic teachings. Including one of them about the practice of student clothing. In 2016, the author saw at the Salafiyah Syafi'iyah Sukorejo Islamic Boarding School there was a phenomenon of the clothing style of some students that did not comply with customary norms of the Islamic boarding school. The portrait of the clothing style of male students was seen to be influenced by foreign culture. Especially those that dominate European clothing styles or what are Vol. 7 No. 1 Januari 2025263 | J U R N A L K O M U N I K A S I D A N K O N S E L I N G I S L A Moften known as western clothing styles. Starting from clothes (t-shirts) with skull pictures, pictures of women without hijab, wearing pencil pants and also some wearing necklaces. Even though the Islamic boarding school has provided clear rules and is reinforced by a circular from the Islamic boarding school management. This study focuses on qualitative data processing with field research. This type of research is descriptive, describing research questions that contain answers about the phenomenon of the dress code of male students of the Salafiyah Syafi'iyah Sukorejo Situbondo Islamic Boarding School in 2016. The results are that the minimum standard of dress of students of the Salafiyah Syafi'iyah Sukorejo Situbondo Islamic Boarding School is 3, namely covering the aurat, not tasabbuh and following the norms of the pesantren. The meaning of communication displayed by students who do not wear clothes according to the norms of the pesantren is 2, namely depicting identity and imitating because of trends.

Abstract

Marriage is a physical and spiritual bond between a man and a woman as husband and wife with the aim of forming a happy and eternal home based on the Almighty Godhead. The aim of this research is to describe marriage guidance for prospective brides and grooms to create a prosperous family at the Bangsalsari District Religious Affairs Office, Jember Regency. This research uses a qualitative research method with a case study type of research. The results of research on marriage guidance for prospective brides and grooms to create a prosperous family consist of seven stages, namely the first is preparation, the prospective bride and groom prepares the documents to register and the counselor prepares the material to be delivered, the second the prospective bride and groom communicate directly with the counselor, the third the prospective bride and groom tell the problems- problems faced, the four prospective brides and grooms interact with counselors to introduce themselves and get to know each other's characters, the fifth conference is related to solving the problems experienced by the prospective brides and grooms, the sixth goal setter at this stage the prospective brides and grooms can respond to the problems faced and can establish a home life and The seventh is the final action taken after carrying out the previous stages. The advisor hopes that by providing useful advice to each participant, they can build a good home life and create a prosperous family.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and describe the communication strategies applied by the Sandubaya Subdistrict Religious Affairs Office (KUA) in promoting religious moderation to create harmony among religious communities in the region. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through participatory observation, indepth interviews with KUA officials and community leaders, and documentation. Data analysis techniques included data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing to ensure the validity of the findings. The results showed that the Sandubaya Subdistrict KUA's da'wah communication was carried out through the integration of two main approaches: da'wah billisan (verbal communication) and da'wah bil-hal (concrete actions). This strategy is implemented through three pillars of activity, namely: 1) Massive socialization in the “Kampung Moderasi Beragama” (Religious Moderation Village), 2) Institutionalization of moderate values in the social structure, and 3) Integration of inclusive creed material. This approach has proven effective in minimizing extreme understandings and strengthening tolerance in a pluralistic society. This study emphasizes the role of the KUA not only as an administrative unit for marriage, but also as a strategic facilitator in da'wah communication based on strengthening religious moderation at the grassroots level.

Abstract

This study examines the symbolic communication meaning of Sufi dance at the Salafiyah Syafi'iyah Islamic Boarding School in Sukorejo, Situbondo. The method used in this study is qualitative, employing a case study approach. Sufi dance, commonly called Sema, is a sacred art form performed by some Sufis or Dervishes as they pursue the divine path to attain serenity, peace, and harmony of the soul. In the context of this research, we discuss a comprehensive overview of Islamic artistic practice, using systematic language for easy and comprehensive understanding. This approach aims to gain deeper insight into the data and information regarding Sufi dance performed at the Salafiyah Syafi'iyah Islamic Boarding School in Sukorejo, Situbondo. The results indicate that the Sufi dance represented is a mystical dance closely associated with spiritual meanings, reflected in several symbols within the dance process, such as the position of the hands raised upward as a symbol of prayer, and the position of the hands crossed over the chest, a symbol of shame.

Abstract

This paper discusses the organizational communication of the Ubudiyah Salafiyah Syafi'iyah Islamic Boarding School (Pondok Salafiyah Syafi'iyah) in overseeing the discipline of congregational prayer among male students. Students' discipline in congregational prayer reflects adherence to the school's rules and regulations. However, some students still face obstacles such as laziness after the school holidays and the students' busy daily activities. This research method is a qualitative case study. Data collection used observation and in-depth interviews with administrators and students. The results indicate that the organizational communication strategy implemented by the Ubudiyah Salafiyah Syafi'iyah Islamic Boarding School (Pondok Salafiyah Syafi'iyah) includes a system of lines of instruction and lines of coordination, with the dominant line of coordination communication. First, the organizational communication system consists of establishing communication in monitoring, establishing communication in supervising, establishing communication in maintaining discipline, dress code, time discipline, and implementation discipline. Second, the process communication system is implemented. Third, the coordination communication system is implemented. Fourth, establishing communication between administrators.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of K.H. Hasyim Asy'ari's da'wah bil-hikmah method in the film Sang Kiai (2013) by Rako Prijanto. Da'wah bil-hikmah is understood as a da'wah approach that emphasizes wisdom, exemplary behavior, and persuasive communication in accordance with the social context. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with Roland Barthes's semiotic analysis to identify the denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings that represent the practice of da'wah bil-hikmah in the film's storyline, characters, and moral message. The results show that the film Sang Kiai represents K.H. Hasyim Asy'ari as a scholar and leader who implements da'wah bil-hikmah through four main approaches: wisdom in taking action, gentle persuasion, moral example, and utilizing social and cultural contexts as a means of da'wah. These findings confirm that film can function as an effective da'wah medium in conveying Islamic values in a contextual and moderate manner.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the strategy of the "Lereh Lereh" program on the local television station BWI 1 TV in constructing tourism and culinary identities in Banyuwangi Regency. Amidst digital media disruption, local television faces significant challenges in remaining relevant as a cultural agent. Using a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and content analysis. The results indicate that BWI 1 TV implements three main strategic pillars: history-based narrative selection (framing), visualization of local cultural symbols, and digital platform synchronization. The program has successfully transformed audience perceptions of culinary and tourism from mere commodities into ancestral heritage that must be preserved. Theoretically, the program fulfills the cycle of social construction through the stages of objectification, internalization, and externalization, triggering the emergence of collective pride (social validation). This study concludes that technological adaptation and consistency in local narratives are key for regional television media to maintain their existence while strengthening regional identity in the era of globalization.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the radical transformation in the digital communication landscape, where social media has shifted from a mere personal interaction tool to a strategic instrument for disseminating religious teachings (da'wah) in the modern era. This study aims to describe and deeply analyze the utilization of the WhatsApp application as a da'wah medium by the youth members of the Taqwa Mosque in Jangkar Village, Situbondo Regency. The primary focus lies on how this text-and-multimedia-based platform is optimized to maintain the continuity of da'wah at the grassroots level. The research method employed is qualitative with a case study approach. Data collection was conducted through participant observation of the subjects' digital activities, in-depth interviews with key youth mosque leaders, and documentation of the disseminated da'wah content. The findings indicate that WhatsApp serves medium for da'wah content through the Status and Broadcast List features; second, as an internal coordination space (Group Chat) to formulate religious agendas before they are disseminated to the wider community. This study also reveals that the use of WhatsApp carries significant implications covering four main aspects: (1) Social Aspect, namely the strengthening of social cohesion among members; (2) Religious Aspect, in the form of increased digital religious literacy; (3) Psychological Aspect, the growth of self-confidence among youth in preaching; and (4) Technical Aspect, regarding the efficiency of real-time information distribution. In conclusion, WhatsApp is not just a communication tool but a digital sacred space that is effective for mosque youth in maintaining the relevance of da'wah amidst the currents of modernization.
