Abstract

COVID-19 pandemic had forced state leaders to take various actions, one of which was through communicating the pandemic measures. In Indonesian context, the difficult times of the 2020-2021 COVID-19 pandemic had also challenged President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) to communicate his response to handling the pandemic differently from communication prior to the pandemic. Jokowi tried to gain compliance and support which could be identified from the linguistic features in his speeches of pandemic handling. This study discusses linguistic features in Jokowi's COVID-19 speech. Voyant-tool was used as a tool for identifying the most salient linguistic units. Analysis was carried out to determine patterns of lexical choices, to examine how these patterns helped construct the pandemic discursively. and to relate it to Jokowi's pandemic communication goals. Results reveal that first person singular I and first-person plural WE/ US were the most salient features. Second, the choice of structure and lexicon specifically indicated a strategy of inclusivity and the creation of a clear group identity. Inclusive WE functioned as linguistic strategy to build collective identity, sense of solidarity and unity of Indonesian, as well as indicating choice of acting as an interlocutor to equalize social actors. Exclusive WE/ US also emphasized identity, speaker involvement actions, personal pronoun I was persuasion device and marker of interpersonal relationship and positioning as the highest authority, while temporal deixis was employed to urge the sense of urgency.

Abstract

Machine translation has become an everyday part of society's news consumption patterns. Unfortunately, important news content is poorly mediated by social media, especially on the output of the translation system feature on the site. Therefore, further research is needed on the evaluation of the auto-translate system on social media. This study focuses on the results of linguistic evaluation on the output of social media machine translation in translating news headlines. The data were taken from news coverage by the Reuters channel in the period of September 1st–7th, 2023 and from social media such as Facebook and Twitter. The translation evaluation used linguistic elements consisting of orthography, morphology, lexical, semantic, and syntax. This study found various kinds of linguistic non-equivalence. Orthographic non-equivalence includes punctuation, capitalization, and apostrophes. Morphological non-equivalence in the two systems was found in number concordance, inflection, derivation, and compounding. Lexical errors occur in both systems in the form of no correspondence and missing target words, as well as untranslated words and proper noun. In terms of semantics, both systems had difficulties with polysemy, homonymy, and expression. Finally, syntactic errors occur with missing articles, prepositions, and inappropriate arrangements of syntactic elements.

Abstract

This study examines how self-taught online graphic designers in Kaliabu Village, Salaman District, Magelang Regency, Central Java, navigate the challenges and dependencies arising from digital platforms, particularly 99designs. Using a case study and in-depth interviews, the research reveals that, while digital technology appears to open new opportunities and empower individuals, it often reinforces control and exploitation within the digital economy. Most Kaliabu designers, lacking formal technical or creative education, leverage 99designs to access the global market, relying on self-developed skills to compete. Despite utilizing their informal capital, they are constrained by the platform's stringent rules. Although 99designs offers broad economic access, it imposes terms that limit designers' autonomy and innovation. Dependence on the platform forces designers to constantly adapt to its policies and face intense competition. The crowdsourcing system of 99designs, where projects are awarded through open competitions, exacerbates these dynamics, pushing designers to compete for every job. In the digital capitalist context, their informal capital often fails to overcome the platform's control and exploitation. This study highlights that while Kaliabu's self-taught designers can compete globally, they must navigate the balance between the freedom and control offered by digital technology. Digital technology enables participation in the digital industry but also presents challenges of control and exploitation that need addressing.

Abstract

In ‘Gelijkstelling van Vreemde Oosterlingen met Europeanen’ (‘Legal Equation of Foreign Asians with Europeans’), published in 1898 in Tijdschrift voor Nederlandsch-Indië, the liberal intellectual M.C. Piepers argued against the legal equation of the resident Japanese subjects in the Netherlands Indies with the Europeans. To make such equation happen, Parliament in the Netherlands discussed a change in the Law in order to alter the provisions with respect to the binary colonial distinction between Europeans and all other people in the Netherlands Indies as laid down in article 109 of the ‘colonial constitution’ (‘regeringsreglement’) of 1854. The change was needed for the 1896/1897 trade-agreement between the Netherlandic Empire and Imperial Japan to be implemented. Piepers warned against this ‘surrender’ to Japanese claims, arguing that the change emerged from a wide-spread misunderstanding of the legal and constitutional regulations with respect to legal entitlements in the Netherlands Indies. This article interprets Piepers’ passionate defense of the judicial status quo concerning equality founded on ‘legal’ definitions of difference, as an avant la lettre constitutional ‘apartheid’ argument. Piepers’ view on Netherlands Indies state formation started from a legal pluralism with subjectively defined groups. We will argue how in these subjectivities resonate three levels of power relations around 1900: a) geopolitical; b) national/state/colonial c) individual; with long-living aftermaths. Piepers final line of defending the status quo is the distinction between the just de jure equality in colonial society and the unjustified de facto hierarchical relationships between the different population groups. This very opposition between just laws and unfair practices in colonial governance obscures how the Eurocentrism of European (liberal) legal thought inevitably resulted in racist practice

Abstract

This article explores music concerts as popular culture used for the 2024 Election political campaign in Semarang. The background of the article is that music concerts are a form of popular culture that is close to generation Z, which is being used by presidential candidate pairs for the 2024 election as a political tool to attract the sympathy of generation Z because generation Z dominates the voter list for the 2024 election. The focus of this article is on music concerts for political campaigns which was held in Semarang. Data collection in this paper applies qualitative methods. The findings in this paper show that music concerts for political campaigns have become popular culture that suits the character of generation Z. Each pair of candidates tries to attract the votes of generation Z through these music concerts. By bringing the character closer to generation Z, namely choosing bands and singers who are invited as representatives of the values and identity held by generation Z. However, this causes cultural reification because generation Z does invoive to the political goals of the campaign and is more prioritize watching their favorite bands and singers. Thus, efforts to attract the votes of generation Z become ineffective because the political objectives of the campaign are sidelined by the interests of generation Z in seeking entertainment. However, popular culture, politics and generation Z are three things that are interconnected and become an important part of the 2024 political campaign. Music, which previously functioned as entertainment and art, has turned into a political stage for candidates to attract votes from Generation Z.

Abstract

This study examined the network-based (online) distribution system of vanity publisher B-STARS Publisher (BSP), analyzed through the lens of Robert Escarpit's theory using a literary sociology research approach. Two main aspects, publication activities and distribution circuits, were encompassed in the analysis of the publisher's distribution system. The result of the analysis unveiled that BSP carried out work publication activities through Instagram social media after all the processes ended, ranging from selection, acceptance, and completion of the script. Furthermore, BSPs were categorized as popular circuits according to their distribution circuits. This category was based on five findings, namely (1) social media optimization as a distribution medium, (2) the non-limiting selection process, (3) the popularity of the manuscript primarily stems from widely recognized works on the Wattpad platform, (4) the characteristics of entertainment publishing works, not for intellectual purposes, and the publication is limitless, and (5) the economic or commodity side that sells BSP works predominantly in the genre of teen fiction (romance).

Abstract

Sexual violence is one of the most talked about cases in society, especially in Indonesia. Many victims are reluctant to report cases of sexual violence due to a lack of evidence or psychological barriers arising from fear, shame, and public ridicule. Because of the rampant cases of sexual violence, several artists were moved to carry out a campaign to prevent sexual violence by making an educational poster. The purpose of this research is to analyze the semiotic signs and meanings in the sexual violence prevention posters more profoundly and to deepen the responses from the responders regarding the posters that have been uploaded. This research uses descriptive and qualitative research design. The data used in this research is from a sample of 13 posters from 9 posts on Instagram. The results and discussion in this study found that icons in this study contain figurative meanings and use many female icons. Meanwhile, symbols in this study are in the form of descriptive information. The index in this study describes many negative images representing the victim's condition. Interpretants in this study found responders' comments that approved the poster information. This research implies that it is suitable to be a reference for linguistic and visual communication research.

Abstract

This research is a translation study that examines the process of cultural transfer. It focuses on translation works that preserve the cultural identity of the source text within the target text. To address this issue, the study draws on theories from Baker and Newmark regarding translation strategies and equivalence, Ahimsa-Putra’s cultural categorization, and Venuti’s concepts of resistance in translation. The primary material for this research is the English novel “Twilight in Djakarta,” which is translated from the source text “Senja di Jakarta.” These primary sources yield data in the form of words and phrases that reflect Jakarta's cultural translation and terminology through documentation. To achieve accurate results, the study employs identity and descriptive-qualitative methods to illustrate the translator’s strategies for conveying the source language culture while maintaining its cultural content. The findings reveal that resistance to cultural terms manifests through loanwords, mixed strategies, and word-for-word translations. This approach not only preserves but also enriches the cultural meanings in the target text. Additionally, this research aims to contribute to the preservation and promotion of Indonesian culture in a global context by retaining cultural terms during translation. Ultimately, it suggests that readers of the target text can gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the cultural context of the source text.

Abstract

The land conversion of the Malang Agricultural Academy Campus into Ijen Nirwana housing is a reflection of land use change that occurs in urban areas. The event caused various environmental and social problems such as the loss of flora and fauna, the phenomenon of prolonged flooding, and the unrest that occurred in the community of Malang City. This paper attempts to narrate the history of land use change and various environmental movements that have occurred in Malang City in order to increase public awareness of the importance of Green Open Space (RTH) as a counterweight to urbanization. The author uses the historical method which includes topic selection, heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography through various interviews and document analysis using a political environmental history perspective. The author found that changes in spatial policies, weak laws, and economic interests were the main factors in the decision to change the land function of APP Malang Campus. This phenomenon caused various responses among the people of Malang City at that time, various rejections were made but could not fully defend the Malang City Agricultural Extension Academy Campus land. This kind of intersection between capitalism and environmental interests often occurs even after the New Order era.
