SETARA: Jurnal Studi Gender dan Anak aims to promote scientific publication concern on Gender, Islam, and Social Inclusion, including children’s right protections in its broadest sense covering textual, historical and empirical aspects, both classical/medieval, modern and contemporary periods in the Islamic World and beyond. The journal strives to include significant studies of gender theory and methodology as well as topical matter. This journal encompasses original research articles based on library and/or empirical research and current book reviews in the field of gender and Islam especially on, but not limited to, eight main topics: (1) Gender and Religious Texts (2) Gender and Islamic Law (3) Gender and educations (4) Gender and politics (5) Gender and Economic (6) Gender and Digital humanities, (7) Gender and social inclusion and (8) Children’s right protection It encourages articles that employ a multi-disciplinary approach to those topics. Scholars from any countries and region that are concerned with gender and social inclusion and its manifestation throughout Muslim community can submit their article to SETARA and use this open access journal.

Abstract

Hadiths considered misogynistic have sparked various debates regarding the position of women in Islam. Literal interpretations without considering the social-historical context may reinforce gender injustice. This study aims to analyze these hadiths using Fazlur Rahman’s Double Movement theory to provide a more just and contextual understanding of the position of women in Islam. This research employs a library research method with a hermeneutic approach, examining primary sources such as hadith collections and academic literature published in the last ten years. Data was collected through critical analysis of relevant hadiths and analyzed with attention to historical, sociological, and anthropological aspects. The findings indicate that the statement about women being “deficient in intellect and religion” must be understood within the social context of 7th-century Arabia, not as a universal principle of women’s inferiority. Furthermore, hadiths regarding testimony, menstruation-related worship, and the prohibition of women traveling without a mahram reflect specific historical conditions that cannot be applied universally across all eras. The discussion emphasizes the importance of a hermeneutic approach to avoid patriarchal bias in understanding religious texts, encouraging a more reflective, just reading that aligns with the principles of Islamic justice. Abstrak Hadis-hadis yang dianggap bermuatan misoginis telah menimbulkan berbagai perdebatan terkait posisi perempuan dalam Islam. Penafsiran literal tanpa mempertimbangkan konteks sosial-historis berpotensi memperkuat ketidakadilan gender. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis hadis-hadis tersebut menggunakan teori Double Movement Fazlur Rahman guna menghasilkan pemahaman yang lebih adil dan kontekstual tentang posisi perempuan dalam Islam. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode studi kepustakaan dengan pendekatan hermeneutika, mengkaji sumber primer seperti kitab hadis serta literatur akademik terkini yang diterbitkan dalam sepuluh tahun terakhir. Data dikumpulkan melalui telaah kritis terhadap hadis-hadis terkait dan dianalisis dengan mempertimbangkan aspek historis, sosiologis, dan antropologis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ungkapan tentang perempuan sebagai “lemah akal dan agama” harus dipahami dalam konteks sosial Arab pada masa Nabi, bukan sebagai prinsip universal tentang inferioritas perempuan. Selain itu, hadis-hadis tentang kesaksian, ibadah saat haid, dan larangan bepergian tanpa mahram juga mencerminkan kondisi historis tertentu yang tidak dapat diterapkan secara mutlak di semua zaman. Diskusi menunjukkan pentingnya pendekatan hermeneutis dalam menghindari bias patriarkal dalam memahami teks keagamaan, sehingga mendorong pembacaan yang lebih reflektif, adil, dan sesuai dengan prinsip keadilan Islam. Abstract

    Breastfeeding, Science, and Islam: A Study of Knowledge Among Islamic College Students     Irma Dwi Tantri,1* 1 UIN Saizu Purwokerto, Indonesia Abstract Stunting in early childhood remains a serious problem in Indonesia, one of the main causes of which is suboptimal breastfeeding practices. Breastfeeding is a practice recommended by both science and Islam. Although the majority of Indonesians are Muslim, the rate of exclusive breastfeeding remains low, especially among working and highly educated mothers. This study aims to analyze the knowledge of early childhood Islamic education students, who represent prospective mothers with academic backgrounds in child development and Islamic law. The research uses a mixed-method (convergent) approach. Data was collected through questionnaires and analyzed simultaneously. Findings indicate that while 97% of respondents believe in the superiority of breast milk, only 18% are aware of its immune benefits. All respondents also agreed that the Qur'an encourages breastfeeding, but only 15% could correctly cite the relevant verse. Additionally, many viewed formula milk as the primary solution to breastfeeding challenges and had limited knowledge about maternal nutrition or breastfeeding counseling. These results indicate that while respondents believe in the importance of breastfeeding from both scientific and Islamic perspectives, their understanding is superficial. Therefore, integrated education is needed, involving the government, educational institutions, the community, and religious leaders to strengthen knowledge about breastfeeding among expectant mothers, focusing not only on the benefits of breast milk but also on lactation management. Keywords: Breastfeeding, Science, Islamic   Abstrak Stunting pada anak usia dini masih menjadi masalah serius di Indonesia, yang salah satu penyebab utamanya adalah praktik menyusui yang belum optimal. Menyusui merupakan praktik yang dianjurkan baik dalam sains maupun Islam. Meskipun mayoritas penduduk Indonesia beragama Islam, tingkat pemberian ASI eksklusif tetap rendah, terutama di kalangan ibu bekerja dan berpendidikan tinggi. Studi ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pengetahuan mahasiswa Pendidikan Islam Anak Usia Dini, yang mewakili calon ibu dengan latar belakang akademis tentang perkembangan anak dan syariah Islam. Penelitian ini mengggunakan metode campuran (konvergen). Data dikumpulkan melalui kuesioner dan dianalisis secara bersamaan. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa meskipun 97% responden meyakini keunggulan ASI, hanya 18% yang mengetahui manfaat imunitasnya. Semua responden juga menyetujui bahwa Al-Qur'an menganjurkan praktik menyusui, namun hanya 15% yang dapat menyebutkan ayat tersebut dengan benar. Selain itu, banyak yang menganggap susu formula sebagai solusi utama untuk kendala menyusui dan memiliki pengetahuan yang terbatas tentang nutrisi ibu atau konselor menyusui. Hasil ini menunjukkan bahwa meskipun responden meyakini keutamaan menyusui baik dari perspektif ilmiah dan Islam, pemahaman mereka bersifat dangkal. Oleh karena itu, edukasi terintegrasi diperlukan dengan melibatkan pemerintah, institusi pendidikan, masyarakat, dan tokoh agama untuk memperkuat pengetahuan tentang menyusui di kalangan calon ibu yang tidak hanya berfokus pada keunggulan ASI tetapi juga manajemen laktasi. Abstract

    The Wellbeing and Vulnerability of Child Labor in Urban Slum Areas of Cirebon: a Study of Photovoice Narrative     Ade Hidayat,1* Zaenal Mutaqin,2 Nur Isnaeny,3 123 UIN Siber Syekh Nurjati Cirebon, Indonesia   Abstract This study aims to explore the welfare and vulnerability of child laborers in urban slums in Cirebon City, a topic that has often been overlooked in previous studies. Using a narrative photovoice approach, six participants aged 10–17 years were involved as the main subjects to document their life experiences through photographs. Key findings indicate that child laborers face various multidimensional vulnerabilities, including physical health, psychosocial, economic, and educational challenges, exacerbated by inadequate living conditions, hazardous work, and limited educational access. On the other hand, they also demonstrate significant resilience and survival strategies. Data analysis based on triangulation of narratives, visual materials, and in-depth interviews reveals the need for a comprehensive approach to addressing this issue, including improvements in social policy, community empowerment, and increased public awareness. This study contributes to a new understanding of the subjective experiences of child laborers and its relevance in developing evidence-based policies. Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan mengeksplorasi kesejahteraan dan kerentanan pekerja anak di kawasan kumuh perkotaan Kota Cirebon, suatu topik yang seringkali kurang dieksplorasi dalam penelitian sebelumnya. Melalui pendekatan naratif photovoice dengan melibatkan enam partisipan berusia 10-17 tahun sebagai subjek utama untuk mendokumentasikan pengalaman hidup mereka menggunakan foto. Temuan utama menunjukkan bahwa pekerja anak menghadapi berbagai kerentanan multidimensi, termasuk kesehatan fisik, psikososial, ekonomi, dan pendidikan, yang diperburuk oleh kondisi tempat tinggal tidak layak, pekerjaan berisiko, dan akses pendidikan yang terbatas. Di sisi lain, mereka juga menunjukkan ketahanan dan strategi bertahan hidup yang signifikan. Analisis data berbasis triangulasi narasi, visual, dan wawancara mendalam mengungkapkan perlunya pendekatan komprehensif untuk mengatasi masalah ini, mencakup perbaikan kebijakan sosial, pemberdayaan komunitas, dan peningkatan kesadaran publik. Penelitian ini berkontribusi pada pemahaman baru tentang pengalaman subjektif pekerja anak dan relevansinya dalam menyusun kebijakan berbasis bukti. Abstract

The Taliban's success in taking back the Afghan government in August 2021 raised concerns for women in Afghanistan. Even though Taliban spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid emphasized that the Taliban currently has a moderate ideology, in reality, the threat of domestication, discrimination, and structural alienation as carried out by the Taliban before 2001 continues to threaten the existence of women. This can be seen in various media reports, one of which is the CNN news headline. Through qualitative research, researchers conducted a study to find out how the media depicts the condition of women amidst the Taliban conflict in Afghanistan. Roland Barthes' semiotics is used as an analytical method to determine the meaning of denotation, connotation and myth. The results of the research show that there are three denotational meanings in CNN news headlines about the condition of women in Afghanistan, namely helplessness, resistance, and culminating in gathering international support. The connotation shows that the Taliban's discrimination against women is real. However, they did not accept this discriminatory policy, resulting in various kinds of resistance that attracted international attention. The CNN news headline builds a mythical meaning (message) that the pretext of enforcing Islamic law promoted by the Taliban is just a cover to alienate and discriminate against women. The Taliban's politics towards women actually contradicts the values ​​of Islam as a religion of mercy and grace.

Abstract

Vulnerable children have the right to protection, and one of the ways to ensure this protection is through education. Religious education offers moral and social values, guidelines for interaction, perspectives, skills, and attitudes that support both individual and social life. Using a descriptive qualitative approach and a case study method, this research aims to provide a detailed account of the implementation of religious education for street children, scavenger children, and orphans—who are categorized as vulnerable children—in Jakarta and South Tangerang. The study concludes that religious education, as an effort to protect vulnerable children in major urban areas, is divided into two forms as learning activities and extracurricular activities. Both forms play a critical role in fostering awareness and acceptance of the child’s identity, both by the children themselves, their families, and the broader community.

    Pendidikan Karakter Anak dalam Masyarakat Transmigran di Wilayah Berpotensi Konflik: Studi Kasus Dumoga, Bolaang Mongondow.   Abdul Muis Daeng Pawero,1* 1 IAIN Manado, Indonesia      Abstract This study explores character education in transmigrant communities living in the Dumoga area, Bolaang Mongondow Regency, North Sulawesi Province. The Dumoga area often experiences tension and frequent conflicts between villages. Transmigrant communities from Java and Bali who live in the villages of Mopugad and Mopuya show high social resilience and can maintain harmony amidst conflicts that often occur around the area. This study uses a qualitative method with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation studies. The main focus of the study is on how the values ​​of character education are applied in everyday life by transmigrant communities, as well as the factors that influence social harmony in an ethnically and culturally diverse environment. The results of the study show that transmigrant communities in Dumoga apply character education through an integrated approach between family, school, and community. The main values ​​taught include mutual cooperation, tolerance, discipline, and responsibility. The implementation of character education does not only occur in formal areas such as schools, but also in the family environment through parenting patterns that prioritize role models, communication, and consistency in instilling positive values. In addition, the role of community leaders, teachers, and traditional leaders is very significant in shaping the attitudes and behavior of the younger generation. Despite facing challenges such as the influence of foreign cultures and modernization that can erode traditional values, transmigrant communities are able to maintain their cultural identity through routine social and customary activities, such as mutual cooperation, cultural festivals, and religious studies. Keywords: Character Education, Transmigrants, Social Conflict, Dumoga   Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi pendidikan karakter pada anak keluarga transmigran yang menetap di wilayah Dumoga, Kabupaten Bolaang Mongondow, Provinsi Sulawesi Utara. Wilayah Dumoga sering mengalami ketegangan dan sering terjadi konflik antar Desa. Masyarakat transmigran asal Jawa dan Bali yang tinggal di desa Mopugad dan Mopuya menunjukkan daya tahan sosial yang tinggi serta mampu menjaga kerukunan di tengah konflik yang kerap terjadi di sekitar wilayah tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan teknik pengumpulan data melalui wawancara mendalam, observasi partisipatif, dan studi dokumentasi. Fokus utama penelitian adalah pada bagaimana nilai-nilai pendidikan karakter diterapkan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari oleh masyarakat transmigran, serta faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi harmonisasi sosial di lingkungan yang beragam secara etnis dan budaya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa masyarakat transmigran di Dumoga menerapkan pendidikan karakter melalui pendekatan yang terintegrasi antara keluarga, sekolah, dan komunitas. Nilai-nilai utama yang diajarkan meliputi gotong royong, toleransi, disiplin, dan tanggung jawab. Implementasi pendidikan karakter ini tidak hanya terjadi di ranah formal seperti sekolah, tetapi juga di lingkungan keluarga melalui pola asuh yang mengedepankan keteladanan, komunikasi, dan konsistensi dalam penanaman nilai-nilai positif. Selain itu, peran tokoh masyarakat, guru, dan pemimpin adat sangat signifikan dalam membentuk sikap dan perilaku generasi muda. Meskipun menghadapi tantangan seperti pengaruh budaya luar dan modernisasi yang dapat mengikis nilai-nilai tradisional, masyarakat transmigran mampu mempertahankan identitas kultural mereka melalui kegiatan sosial dan adat istiadat yang rutin dilaksanakan, seperti gotong royong, festival budaya, serta pengajian.
