Abstract

The religious radicalism in Indonesia is growing immensely with the huge application of digital technology, particularly social media, as a novel platform for spreading extremist religious ideology. Moderate preaching has become an important approach in countering the spread of radicalism in this context. This article examines how moderate da'wah is reconstructed by preachers (muballigh) of two major Islamic organizations, namely Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah, in addressing da'wah challenges in the digital era. This study employs a qualitative methodology with a virtual ethnographic style to observe the da'wah content disseminated by NU and Muhammadiyah preachers through social media. The results of the study indicate that NU and Muhammadiyah preachers have changed their da'wah methods by utilizing digital media such as Instagram and TikTok as a platform for disseminating Islamic messages that are tolerant, inclusive, and anti-violent. The methods implemented include building contextual religious discourses, adopting cultural approaches, and engaging in active participation in interfaith dialogue and societal engagement. This shift indicates that moderate da'wah is not only capable of keeping pace with technological advancements but also plays a significant role in advancing peaceful religious consciousness within the digital public sphere. This article recommends the importance of institutional support and enhancing the digital capabilities of religious educators to make moderate da'wah more effective in countering religious radicalism.

Abstract

This article aims to explore and analyze the phenomenon of Qur'anic commodification, which is the practice of converting Qur'anic texts into commodities traded for commercial gain and to serve identity politics. This research employs qualitative methods, including a literature study with a philosophical analysis approach, to explore the ethical and social implications of this practice. In a philosophical analysis, this article outlines how the practice of commodifying the Qur'an positions the text as a noble one used to attract customers and strengthen political identity. This study identifies two key dimensions: First, in the commercial realm, the practice of commodifying the Qur'an tends to overlook the sacred values and holiness inherent in the text. This research reveals how the marketing of products based on the Qur'an frequently overlooks ethical considerations and religious values in pursuit of maximizing profits. This raises questions about whether this practice conforms to the principles of fair business ethics and social responsibility. Second, in the context of identity politics, the commodification of the Qur'an can be used to reinforce the political identity of a particular group. The practice could spark debate about how religion is used as a tool to achieve political ends and influence relations between citizens and religions. In philosophical analysis, this article explores the conflict between the freedom of business and the protection of religious values within the context of identity politics. These findings underscore the importance of ethical reflection and philosophical understanding in grasping the implications of the commodification of the Qur'an. The article also emphasizes the importance of dialogue and thoughtful consideration among commercial, religious, and political values to achieve a balance that aligns with ethical principles and societal values.

Abstract

In an attempt to manage religious difference, this study focusses on a theoretical and practical evaluation of the idea of religious literacy. Since it introduces an interreligious educational approach and practice, the idea of religious literacy is regarded as important for addressing religious diversity. This study poses the following questions: how is the idea of religious literacy conceptualized? In what ways is religious literacy taught and practiced in Indonesia? This study uses a case study methodology and is qualitative in nature. This research looked at the Leimena Institute's Cross-Cultural Religious Literacy program. The goal of cross-cultural religious literacy is to create an environment where religious believers may interact and work together. This research finds that Cross-Cultural Religious Literacy is a crucial approach to fostering interreligious learning that goes beyond tolerance and towards interfaith involvement and cooperation in the face of rising religiously motivated violent extremism and religious division. Through the components of three competencies and three skills, as well as interdisciplinary approaches to understanding and teaching about religion. Cross-Cultural Religious Literacy promotes four dimensions of religious literacy: factual, procedural, conceptual, and metacognitive knowledge.

Abstract

The Credit Union (CU) movement in Pontianak City, West Kalimantan, has long been recognized for its significant role in enhancing the economic well-being of its members. However, its contribution to strengthening civil society dimensions is often overlooked. This study aims to analyze and identify in depth how credit unions play a crucial role in building and reinforcing the foundations of civil society in Pontianak, beyond their primary function as microfinance institutions. Using qualitative data collected in 2019 from the Stella Maris Credit Union in Pontianak, this research reveals that CU functions not only as a provider of inclusive financial access but also as an essential space for economic self-reliance, democratic participation, and social solidarity, all of which are vital elements for strengthening the civil society ecosystem. The findings demonstrate that through cooperative principles and sustainable educational programs, both financial and non-financial, CU has successfully fostered collective awareness, enhanced financial literacy, and promoted a spirit of mutual cooperation among its members. Furthermore, its participatory decision-making mechanism reflects grassroots democratic practices essential to the empowerment of civil society. Thus, the Credit Union has transformed into an agent of social change, empowering communities to act independently and collectively in addressing socio-economic challenges. The implications of this study suggest that Credit Unions should be viewed as an important pillar of civil society in Pontianak and as a potential model for other community-based institutions in Indonesia in building a more independent, empowered, and democratic society.

Abstract

This study examines the Wedang ublek tradition practiced during the Haul (annual commemoration) of Mbah Abdusshomad Jombor in Cipete Village, Cilongok District, Banyumas Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. This research aims to describe the procession of the Wedang ublek tradition and analyze its symbolic meanings using Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutic interpretation theory. This qualitative research employs a cultural studies approach with field research methodology. Data were collected through literature study, in-depth interviews with traditional practitioners, descendants (dzurriyah), and cultural figures, as well as participatory observation and documentation. The findings reveal that the Wedang ublek tradition is an integral part of the Haul Mbah Abdusshomad Jombor commemoration, conducted annually on the 14th of Dzulhijjah in the Islamic calendar. The tradition involves serving a distinctive beverage called "wedang ublek" (a mixture of coffee, coconut milk, palm sugar, and water) accompanied by complementary dishes of "krawu" and "sega aking." The hermeneutic analysis demonstrates that this tradition embodies multiple layers of meaning: (1) as a form of selametan (communal thanksgiving) representing gratitude to Allah SWT; (2) as a medium for almsgiving and sharing blessings with the community; (3) as a means of strengthening social bonds and silaturahmi (kinship ties); and (4) as a symbolic embodiment of the "cagak lek" doctrine, which emphasizes spiritual vigilance and night worship. The tradition reflects the harmonious synthesis of Islamic values and Javanese cultural wisdom, demonstrating how local communities preserve religious heritage while maintaining their cultural identity. Abstract

This paper explores how the Sikh community in Malaysia navigates its religious identity, cultural traditions and sense of belonging within a Muslim-majority society. Drawing upon sociological perspectives, the study examines the lived experiences of Malaysian Sikhs as they balance historical continuity, religious observance and contemporary pressures of integration. Through a combination of historical reflection and qualitative insights, it highlights how Sikh individuals and institutions engage in dynamic negotiations by retaining core traditions such as the turban, the gurdwara and Panjabi language while also adapting to national expectations, educational systems and multicultural policies. These negotiations are situated within broader frameworks of diaspora identity, minority religious experience in plural societies and cultural resilience, with particular attention to generational shifts in identity expression. By analyzing the strategies Sikhs employ to maintain distinctiveness while fostering national belonging, this paper contributes to the broader discourse on religious minorities in Southeast Asia and the evolving meaning of multicultural citizenship in Malaysia.
