Abstract

The Omed-Omedan Festival, held annually in Banjar Kaja, Sesetan Village, Bali, is a unique cultural heritage event that emphasizes youth participation and social interaction. Despite its long-standing tradition and popularity among tourists, the festival faces several challenges in risk management, particularly concerning crowd control, safety, and health protocols. This study aims to analyze the implementation of risk management at the Omed-Omedan Festival based on the ISO 31000:2018 framework. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving four key informants selected using the snowball sampling technique. The results reveal that although risk communication and identification have been conducted, the overall implementation of risk management remains suboptimal, especially in documentation, monitoring, and post-event evaluation. This study contributes to enhancing event safety practices and offers recommendations for improving the sustainability and management quality of traditional festivals in Bali.

Abstract

This study explores the role of ecolinguistics in preserving linguistic diversity amid globalization, where dominant world languages threaten the survival of local and indigenous tongues. Grounded in the ecolinguistics view that language is part of the ecological system, the research examines how linguistic diversity supports cultural and environmental sustainability. Employing a qualitative multi-method design-combining Critical Ecolinguistics Discourse Analysis (CEDA), documentary review, and comparative case studies-the study analyzes policies, media narratives, and community practices influencing language vitality. Data were collected from policy documents, UNESCO reports, NGO publications, and media texts on language endangerment and revitalization. Findings show that language loss parallels ecological degradation, as languages encode environmental knowledge and sustainable traditions vital for human–nature balance. Globalization’s ideologies of progress and uniformity foster linguistic homogenization, resembling the ecological impact of monocultures. Ecolinguistics highlights the “stories we live by” (Stibbe, 2021)—discourses that either sustain or threaten both linguistic and ecological diversity. Revitalization movements reveal that linking language with ecological awareness strengthens identity and community resilience. Ultimately, ecolinguistics offers both analytical and practical tools for integrating language preservation into sustainability agendas, aligning linguistic and ecological justice to build sustainable futures for people and the planet

Abstract

This study examines Balinese script as a symbolic system that serves as a gateway to understanding the philosophical depth of Nusantara literature. Employing a qualitative approach with a descriptive-interpretative design, this research analyzes classical Balinese texts, including lontar, kakawin, and geguritan, to explore the philosophical meanings embedded within the script. Data were collected through document analysis, observation, and in-depth interviews, and were analyzed using an interactive model involving data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that Balinese script is not merely a writing system but a complex symbolic medium that embodies spiritual, ethical, and cosmological values. It functions as a bridge between the physical (sekala) and spiritual (niskala) realms, enabling deeper interpretation of literary texts beyond their literal meanings. Furthermore, the script plays a crucial role in preserving and transmitting philosophical knowledge across generations through traditional manuscripts. However, the study also identifies significant challenges in the preservation of Balinese script in the digital era, including declining literacy among younger generations, limited access to traditional manuscripts, and insufficient integration into modern digital platforms. In response, the study highlights the importance of holistic revitalization strategies, including digital innovation, culturally responsive education, community engagement, and policy support to ensure its sustainability. Theoretically, this research contributes to the development of literary and cultural studies by positioning script as a central element in meaning-making processes. Practically, it offers insights into the preservation and revitalization of local cultural heritage in the context of globalization. Ultimately, Balinese script is reaffirmed not only as a cultural artifact but also as a living knowledge system that remains relevant in contemporary society.

Abstract

This study examined the speaking performance of IT students in simulated video-based tasks, namely company profile presentations and personal branding videos. The research was conducted as a qualitative case study involving 38 students. Data were collected from students’ video recordings and analyzed using a speaking performance rubric covering fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary use, grammar, and content organization. The findings showed that students achieved higher, more consistent performance on the simulated company profile task, with an overall average score of 3.6, compared to 3.0 on the personal branding task. In the individual task, only 10 of 38 students demonstrated confident, fluent speech. The results indicated that group-based tasks supported fluency and organization, while individual tasks required greater independence and revealed varied speaking abilities. It was concluded that combining collaborative and individual video-based tasks provided balanced opportunities for developing students’ speaking competence.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to analyze the role of baligraphy as an innovative approach in learning Balinese language and culture. Baligraphy is a visual art form that combines Balinese script with aesthetic elements, so it not only has artistic value, but also educational and cultural value. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques such as literature study, observation, and documentation. The results show that baligraphy can increase students' interest and motivation in learning Balinese script through creative activities involving visual and motor aspects. In addition, baligraphy helps strengthen students' understanding of the structure of Balinese script through the process of repetition in creative practice. Baligraphy also plays a role in fostering creativity and is an effective medium in conveying Balinese philosophical and cultural values ??to the younger generation. In an educational context, baligraphy is relevant to be applied in project-based learning in accordance with the principles of the Independent Curriculum, because it encourages contextual, active, and experience-based learning. Thus, baligraphy can be an innovative strategy that integrates aspects of language, art, and culture while supporting the preservation of Balinese culture in the era of globalization.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of festival attractiveness at the Sagarurung Festival on tourists’ decision to visit Penukal Abab Lematang Ilir (PALI) Regency. The study employed a quantitative approach with an associative research design, involving 100 respondents who had previously attended the festival, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed using multiple linear regression. The results indicate that festival attractiveness, consisting of festival atmosphere, social interaction, cultural symbols, and festival activities, was generally perceived positively by visitors. The dimensions of festival atmosphere and cultural symbols had a positive influence on the decision to visit, while social interaction and festival activities showed a negative but insignificant effect. The coefficient of determination (R²) of 6.2% suggests that other factors outside the model have a more dominant influence. Nevertheless, tourists demonstrated a high level of interest in visiting and revisiting the destination. This study highlights the importance of improving event quality and integrating external factors in the development of tourism strategies.

Abstract

This study examined the indispensable role of English in tourism services through a case study conducted in Bali, one of Indonesia’s primary international tourist destinations. The problem addressed in this research concerned the extent to which English proficiency influenced service quality and visitor satisfaction in tourism-related sectors. A qualitative approach was employed, involving observations, in-depth interviews with tourism workers, and document analysis across hospitality, transportation, and local attraction services. The findings indicated that English functioned not only as a communication tool but also as a bridge for cultural exchange, enabling service providers to respond accurately to tourists’ needs and expectations. Limited English proficiency was found to hinder effective interaction, often leading to misunderstandings and reduced service efficiency. Conversely, workers with stronger English skills demonstrated greater confidence, adaptability, and professionalism, which contributed to higher levels of tourist satisfaction. The study concluded that English competency played a central role in sustaining service excellence and competitiveness in Bali’s tourism industry. Strengthening language training programs for tourism practitioners was therefore identified as a practical solution to improve service quality and maintain Bali’s reputation as a global destination.
