Abstract

Janeng starch (Dioscorea Alata) and rice straws are developed to be used as adsorbents in dry washing method to purify crude biodiesel. In this study, we evaluate the potential of rice straw and janeng starch as natural adsorbents in the purification of biodiesel that replace the role of water in absorbing contaminants from biodiesel. The SEM characterization results show that the starch adsorbent and rice straw has an open and porous surface and is evenly distributed for janeng starch. Both adsorbents, either the janeng starch or rice straw, can be applied for the purification of biodiesel. The quality of biodiesel is influenced by the amount of adsorbents used in biodiesel purification. The effectiveness of the adsorbent is shown by the decrease in free fatty acids, alkali numbers, soap numbers and turbidity levels in biodiesel. The concentration of free fatty acid oil in crude biodiesel before the purification step was 0.769 mg-KOH/g, then decreased to 0.128 mg-KOH/g after the adsorption. This acid value had been very low and met the Indonesian quality national standard for biodiesel spesically 0.50 mg-KOH/g. Either janeng starch or rice straw adsorbent was able to reduce the soap content of potassium oleate to level 53.33 ppm from the initial content of 106.67 ppm. These two natural adsorbents can be the alternative adsorbents in the purification of biodiesel that employs dry washing method.

Abstract

The study of stand structure of rubber agroforest system and its effect on tree sapling diversity was carried out in Bungo District, Jambi Province from August 2004 to August 2005. Basal area (BA) and tree density were surveyed using variable-area transect method. Tree sapling species was surveyed using standard plots combined with circular elementary subplots laid along 60 m transect line. The result shown that BA and tree density of rubber agroforest system were lower significantly with forest at the diameter class 30 cm, but at the diameter class 30 cm there were not differ significantly. PCA analysis shown there was a positive correlation between BA non rubber tree with the species diversity and richness indices of tree sapling in rubber agroforest system and there was no correlation between density of non rubber tree and the indices. However, in the forest, BA and tree density were have a negative correlation with the species diversity and richness indices of tree sapling.

Abstract

Vannamei shrimps (Litopenaeus vannamei), also known as white leg shrimps are widely cultivated and consumed by many people. However, most consumers have removed the shrimp’s head which integrates with its digestive tract. The digestive tract of white leg shrimp contains digestive enzymes, including amylase. This study aimed to determine the protein content and amylase activity from Vannamei shrimps’ digestive tract using the size exclusion chromatography method. The protein isolation of size exclusion chromatography was prepared in three steps, namely; centrifugation, precipitation, and dialysis. The protein from the dialysis step was purified by using gel filtration chromatography. Each obtained fraction was determined the protein content and amylase activity by using spectrophotometer UV-Vis method. The results showed that the fraction of 108th had the highest protein content and amylase activity with a value of 0.85 mg/ml and 25.66U/ml respectively. @font-face {font-family:"Cambria Math"; panose-1:2 4 5 3 5 4 6 3 2 4; mso-font-charset:0; mso-generic-font-family:roman; mso-font-pitch:variable; mso-font-signature:-536869121 1107305727 33554432 0 415 0;}p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-unhide:no; mso-style-qformat:yes; mso-style-parent:""; margin:0cm; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman",serif; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:EN-US;}.MsoChpDefault {mso-style-type:export-only; mso-default-props:yes; font-size:10.0pt; mso-ansi-font-size:10.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt; mso-ansi-language:IN; mso-fareast-language:IN;}div.WordSection1 {page:WordSection1;}

Abstract

A study on the adsorption characteristic of Iron onto Poly[eugenol-co-(divinyl benzene)] (EDVB) from aqueous solution has been conducted. EDVB was produced and characterized by using FTIR spectroscopy. The adsorption was studied by a batch method by considering the factors affecting the adsorption such as initial metal ion concentration, adsorption selectivity, and mechanism of adsorption using a sequential desorption method. The adsorption of Iron onto EDVB followed a pseudo-2 order kinetics model with the rate constant of 0,144 L2 mmol-1 min-1. The adsorption isotherm was studied with Tempkin, Langmuir and Freundlich models. The adsorption capacity (Qmax) obtained by Langmuir isotherms was 250mg.L-1 while the equilibrium value was 0.8 Lmg-1. A competitive adsorption study showed that EDVB is adsorbed selectively towards Iron rather than Chromium, Coppers and Cadmium ions. The interaction type of Iron onto EDVB was determined by a sequential desorption.Keywords: Polyeugenol; divinyl benzene (DVB); adsorption; Iron; FeReferencesAbasi, C. Y.; Abia, A.A.; Igwe, J.C. Abstract

MOL is a local microorganism or natural decomposer that is used as a starter culture in production of organic fertilizers which is known as bokashi. The advantage of using MOL is that it can be made from cheap materials or by utilizing agricultural waste so that it can increase the added value of waste as well as reduce the environmental pollution. The use of MOL as a biodecomposer in production of bokashi can accelerate the fermentation process. This study aimed to produce MOL where the characteristic is similar with commercial Effective Microorganism (EM4). This study used a factorial randomized block design (RBD) with 2 factors. First factor was the types of banana (J) consisted of three levels, namely awak banana (Musa paradisiacal var. Awak; J1), barangan banana (Musa acuminate Colla; J2), and kepok banana (Musa acuminata balbisiana Colla; J3). Second factor was the storage times consisted of three levels, namely 0 weeks after fermentation (L1), 2 weeks after fermentation (L2), and 4 weeks after fermentation (L3). The analysis carried out after fermentation included total cell counts (TCC), pH value, temperature, and organoleptic test in the form of hedonic test for color and description test for aroma. The best sample was determined based on the highest TCC, the lowest pH value and aroma using a ranking test. The best treatment was obtained from J1L2 treatment (awak banana and 2 weeks after fermentation) with 1.8 × 109 CFU/ml of TCC, 3.17 of pH and medium tapai aroma.

Abstract

In urban areas, there is not only a heavy reliance on ground water as a primary drinking supply but is also as a supply of water for both agriculture and industrial uses. The reliance on ground water is necessary to ensure that there are significant quantities and high quality of water. Ground water resources at coastal urban forest in Banda Aceh were assessed by using VLF method. VLF techniques measured the perturbations in a plane wave radio signal (15-30 kHz) being emanated from one of several world-widde radio transmitters and was also used for submarine communications. Apparent resistivities and phases were measured along 340 m profile at the area. Two frequencies (27700 and 29000 Hz) were used in this measurement. The data were modeled by using 2D inversion code of Rebocc. The model showed clearly ground-water map of the subsurface. Based on the model, aquifer layers were indicated by low resistivities zones (40 – 400 Ω-m). However, the ground-water resources in the area were dominated with high salinity water at depth under 140 m. Therefore, extended geophysical exploration methods were water aquifer in the area to watering the forest.
