Abstract

This study aims to examine the phenomenon of hybridity in Ayu Dewi's 1890 novel using Homi K. Bhabha's postcolonial concept. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method through text content analysis. Data collection was conducted through thorough reading and recording of relevant quotations, while data analysis used the Miles and Huberman model (reduction, presentation, conclusion drawing). The results of the study show the phenomenon of hybridity that gives rise to a new identity as a result of the mixing of colonial and local cultures. This phenomenon appears in three forms: linguistic hybridity (the use of Dutch and Malay), lifestyle hybridity (the adoption of European lifestyles), and character identity hybridity (such as Pamungkas and Utari). Hybridity functions as a mechanism for negotiating power, a form of resistance, and an attempt to build social mobility for colonized subjects.

Abstract

This study describes women’s writing and women’s language in the novel Belenggu Merah Muda by Tyas Damaria using Elaine Showalter’s gynocritics approach. This qualitative descriptive research uses textual data from the novel that reflect the female characters’ life experiences. The analysis focuses on three aspects: explicit and implicit sentences, body expressions, and multifocal elements in women’s language. The results show that Damaria portrays women’s experiences through emotional, metaphorical, and reflective language. Explicit sentences reveal the burdens and roles of women, while implicit sentences appear through metaphors that signify the protagonist’s emotional wounds. Body expressions emerge in open, fragmented, and flowing forms, illustrating the character’s psychological conditions. Furthermore, the multifocal aspect reflects women’s layered and complex perspectives on life. These findings affirm that women’s literature serves as a space to articulate women’s experiences authentically

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the forms of love and sacrifice found in Fredy S.’s novel Kembali ke Pelukan Cinta based on Erich Fromm’s concept of love. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a literary psychology approach. The data consist of textual excerpts, sentences, and dialogues in the novel that represent Fromm’s five objects of love: brotherly love, motherly love, erotic love, self-love, and love of God. The results show that the novel portrays love in various dimensions of humanity accompanied by sacrifice as a logical consequence of love itself. Brotherly love appears in the friendships between characters; motherly love is shown through the parents’ care for their children; erotic love is depicted through the relationship between Rosana and Herman; self-love is seen in the characters’ efforts to accept themselves and their past; while love of God emerges from the characters’ religious awareness of divine power. Each form of love is always accompanied by acts of sacrifice—physical, emotional, or spiritual. These findings affirm the relevance of Erich Fromm’s concept of love in understanding the dynamics of love and humanity in literary works

Abstract

This study aims to examine the differences in social status between the natives and the colonizers in the novel Pangeran dari Timur (Prince of the East) by Iksaka Banu and Kurnia Effendi using Ania Loomba's postcolonial perspective. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach. The data sources are quotations from the novel that represent colonial relations, including dialogues, narratives, and scene descriptions. The data were collected through reading and note-taking techniques, then analyzed using the concepts of racial hierarchy, social class, education, and modernity. The results of the study show that colonialism constructed a social status hierarchy that placed European colonizers as the superior group and indigenous people as the inferior group. Education and modernity functioned as means of ideological domination that limited social mobility. The conclusion of the study confirms that colonialism normalized the domination of the colonizers and degraded the dignity of the indigenous people.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the forms of dialectal shift and identify its contributing factors. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected from social media content, podcasts, films, and television programs featuring Makassar artists such as Arief Brata, Denny Sumargo, Indah Permatasari, Eca Aura, Maizura, and Musdalifah. The analysis was conducted using Joshua A. Fishman’s domain theory of language use. The findings reveal three forms of shift: functional, domain, and identity shifts. The main driving factors include urbanization, globalization, and the professional demands of the entertainment industry. The study concludes that this dialect shift is both a sociolinguistic and sociocultural phenomenon, reflecting the marginalization of local dialects in modern public communication.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the use of visual metaphors in the film Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck through the semiotic approach of Charles Sanders Peirce, revealing the messages embedded within these metaphors while classifying them into five categories as proposed by Noël Carroll: Potrait Komposit, composite construction, Fotomontase, animation category, and superimposition. The research method used is qualitative, with data consisting of visual elements from the film Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck, directed by Sunil Soraya and adapted from the novel by Buya Hamka. Data analysis follows the Miles and Huberman model: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings consist of visual metaphors analyzed using Peirce's triadic sign model (representamen, object, interpretant), uncovering symbolic meanings that enrich the film’s narrative while also identifying the type of visual metaphor. The results show that four out of the five types of visual metaphors appear in the film. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of cinema’s power to convey messages and emotions through visual storytelling
