Aceh International Journal of Science & Technology (AIJST) is published by the Graduate School of Syiah Kuala University (PPs Unsyiah) and the Indonesian Soil Science Association (Himpunan Ilmu Tanah Indonesia, Komda Aceh). It is devoted to identifying, mapping, understanding, and interpreting new trends and patterns in science & technology development, especially within Asian countries as well as other parts of the world. The journal endeavors to highlight science & technology development from different perspectives. The aim is to promote broader dissemination of the results of scholarly endeavors into a broader subject of knowledge and practices and to establish effective communication among academic and research institutions, policymakers, government agencies, and persons concerned with the complex issue of science & technology development. The Journal is a peer-reviewed journal. Abstract

Krueng Baro Irrigation network is a strategic technical irrigation area in Pidie, Aceh, Indonesia. The primary water source is the Krueng Baro River flow using the infrastructure of Keumala Weir in which sedimentation is currently a significant problem in its operations. To prevent the sediment from entering the irrigation channel is to settle it in the settling basin. However, the primary irrigation channel with the stone masonry walls kept experiencing high sedimentation. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the performance of the Keumala Weir settling basin including its capacity and efficiency. This study used a survey method for data collection and an evaluation method following the current guidelines for data analysis. The sediment sampling was conducted in the settling basin and the primary channel. The flushing was currently carried out for seven days. However, the settling basin capacity of 2,436.75 m3 did not meet the flushing requirements. Thus, the flushing should be performed daily for a volume of 1,859.43 m3 to fulfill the condition, so that the capacity of the settling basin was controlled. The efficiency of sediment settling was 75%, and the effect of water turbulence was in a safe condition, that the sediment settled in a settling basin would not be eroded when it is empty or full. For the flushing efficiency, the shear stress was 15,538 N/m2 that can rinse less than 16 mm particles. Based on this evaluation, it can be concluded that the sediments in the primary channel were from the settling basin. It is suggested to limit the speed in the regulating building to approximately 1.5 m/s to reduce the sediments entering the primary channel. It also requires accuracy in the operation of the primary channel intake.

Abstract

Abstract - The toxicity of arsenic is known to be a risk to aquatic flora and fauna and to human health even in relatively low concentration. In this research an adsorption gel was prepared from agricultural waste material (orange waste) through simple chemical modification in the view to remove arsenic (V) from water. Orange waste was crushed into small particles and saponified with Ca(OH)2 to prepare saponified orange waste, which was further modified by immobilizing gadolinium(III) to obtain desired adsorption material (Gd(III)-immobilized SOW gel). The effective pH range for arsenic adsorption was found to be 7.5 – 8.5. Adsorption capacity of the gel was evaluated to be 0.45 mol-arsenic (V)/kg. Dynamic adsorption of arsenic (V) in column-mode was conducted and a dynamic capacity was found to be 0.39 mol/kg. Elution of arsenate was tested after complete saturation of the column packed with gadolinium-immobilized orange waste adsorption gel. A complete elution of arsenate was achieved with the help of 1 M HCl and 28 times pre-concentration factor was attained. This study showed that a cheap and abundant agro-industrial waste material could be successfully employed for the remediation of arsenic pollution in aquatic environment.Keywords: Arsenic; Orange waste; Gadolinium(III); Adsorption; Elution.

Abstract

The existence of traditional houses in Banda Aceh has been extinguished in modern times. With globalization's impact, the traditional house connotates as ‘old house style,’ and thus, the house style is not up to date. A large number of house owners demolish them and reconstruct them with new modern houses. Despite that, it is approved that the traditional houses of Aceh were survived the earthquake that frequently hit the region. As Banda Aceh is one of the regions resided on Sumatran's segment, the region has a large number of earthquakes.  This paper, which is part of the previous study on the thermal comfort of traditional and modern houses in Aceh, explores a historical architectural example that reveals local experiences that involve local wisdom and expertise. This paper focuses on a traditional house located in a modern housing neighborhood in Banda Aceh city. In doing this, the paper identifies how Acehnese ancestors, through their local knowledge, have constructed a traditional Acehnese house. The article also shows how its architectural form's construction techniques respond to the region's geographical condition. In constructing this study, interview and observation toward the building as primary data collections are conducted. Also, several written sources, as secondary data, related to an Acehnese traditional house, are reviewed. This paper shows that constructing a conventional house is a responsive architecture toward hot climate and earthquake. Therefore, this architectural building type with the local wisdom value's involvement is worthy of being applied and adapted in modern life.

Abstract

Ecologically based approaches to pest management in crop production have been embraced in recent decades due to their validity and effectiveness. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is not a new concept. It has been adopted in various regions in Vietnam, particularly in tomato production, an economically important vegetable crop in the Red River Delta (RRD). Given the occurrence and development of tomato pests are influenced by many factors such as soil types, crop varieties and growth habits, production practices, local climatic conditions, and growing seasons, this paper therefore developed an IPM program for tomatoes in the RRD based on the defined major pests in the region. Detailed factsheets for six major pests were developed and different components of the IPM were explored and employed for the ease of identification and management. Practical suggestions for tomato growers were also presented.

Abstract

A good strength level of the ground surface is the main concern in an area with rapid housing infrastructure development, such as Baitussalam district-Aceh Besar, Indonesia. A seismic refraction method was applied with three similar profile lines using PASI 16S – 24P equipment and 10 Hz vertical geophones to identify the sub-surface layer. The result was processed using Winsism software and Surfer 8. The results of seismic refraction were deduced and correlated with conventional geotechnical investigation obtained by a previous study. The results of 3 survey lines show that the area has two main layers. The first layer was interpreted as overburden (soil and clayey sand) with a compressional wave velocity (Vp) value of fewer than 1.8 km/s. The second layer produces a high velocity of more than 2 km/s. This second layer is interpreted as highly to moderately weathered rock. The results of seismic refraction surveys of the present study suggest a reasonably good correlation with the standard penetration test (SPT) and rock quality designation (RQD) obtained in the previous investigation. The strength level of the second layer showed  N-SPT of 65 and RQD of at least 50%.

Abstract

Bobanehena village is geographically located in the coastal area of subduction route, causing the village to be vulnerable to frequent earthquakes. The 5 SR earthquake struck the village in 2015 caused heavy damages to people's houses. The houses that are susceptible to damage by earthquakes, resulting in many casualties. This research aim is to identify the types of house in Bobanehena village, West Halmahera Regency. Typological data of houses can be used as database for vulnerability assessment in Bobanehena village. The method used was field study, structured interviews, and documentation using field observation to determine the physical condition of houses which are responsive to earthquakes. The results of the research indicate that the residence in Bobanehena village, West Halmahera Regency is in the form of the spatial distribution of earthquakes-prone housing, which forms a longitudinal pattern and expanded to the coastal area. The characteristic of settlement distribution is unorganized and clustered, so it appears to be in a random pattern. The typology of earthquake-prone residences in Bobanehena village can be classified into three types, namely Stengah Leger house, Fala Kanci traditional house, and modern house. In addition, from those three types, Stengah Leger and Fala Kanci are responsive to the earthquake load, for it uses wooden frame construction.

Abstract

Abstract- In this research Xanthosoma nigrum Stellfeld (the Purple yam) was selected as experimental material. This plant was collected from Rejang Lebong region, Bengkulu Province. Methanol extract 96% from stem of purple yam was studied its anti-oxidant activity in various concentrations with α-tocopherol (200 ppm) as standard of antioxidant. Antioxidant activity was determined using Thiobarbituric Acid (TBA) method. Linoleic acid was oxidized at 40 ºC for seven days with or without extract and the final product malondialdehyde (MDA) was reacted with thiostembituric acid to be of red colored complex (MDA-TBA) and was then measured by UV-VIS spectrophotometer at λ 532 nm. Stem extract of purple yam with concentration of 100 ppm, 150 ppm, 200 ppm and 300 ppm respectively had the inhibition of 19.32%, 21.85%, 29.47%, and 31.05%.  α-Tocopherol as positive control which showed inhibition ability of 85.14% at 200 ppm. Based on the result obtained in this study, the stem’s extract of Purpel yam plant showed that antioxidant activity was lower than α-tocopherol. Keywords : Xanthosoma nigrum; Stellfeld; MDA; Antioxidant.

Abstract

Block F3 North Sea is a block with pore pressure values that vary over time due to complex geological conditions such as burial and various sedimentation zones. Pore pressure is one of the important aspects that need to be analyzed as a basis for the identification of zones and overpressure mechanisms. Overpressure is a greater pore pressure condition than normal pressure and may cause drilling problems, such as kicks, blowouts, etc. This study calculated pore pressure values using the eaton method approach with well data and seismic data. Both data are integrated for generating pore pressure values in 1D and 3D. 1D Modelling uses Interactive Petrophysics 3.5, while 3D modeling uses Petrel software. In 3D modeling, the variables used are interval velocity and inversion velocity obtained by acoustic impedance inversion. The sub-variables used are the inversion density and the regression density obtained from well density acoustic impedance inversion. The existence of a 1D overpressure zone at a depth of 1,100 – 1,800 m with an overpressure value of 3,836 – 18,975 kPa. In addition, the overpressure value based on the 3D model is 8,000 – 18,000 kPa. The overpressure zone is validated using an acoustic impedance inversion model with a high value of 5,200 – 5,380 (m/s)*(gr/cc). Overpressure in Block F3 is predicted to occur from disequilibrium compaction..

Abstract

Water is one the most important natural resources to maintain human life and all other living things in the earth. Around 65% water were consumed for drinking purpose, while others were used for daily needs. The increasing amount of work on water use and scarcity in relation to consumption and trade has led to the emergence of the field of Water Footprint (WF). Climate change, rural development, world population growth and industrialization have placed considerable stress on the local availability of water resources. Thus, it is necessary to perform study in order to analyze water demands and supply for sustainable water availability. Recently, water footprint analysis has been widely draw attention to the scientists and engineers. The water footprint analysis is closely related with virtual water from which it is defined as total water volume used for consumption and trade. The main aim of this present study is to analyze and assess the total water requirement based on community water footprint in Krueng Aceh watershed area. The virtual water used in this study are dominant consumption food commodities. The result shows that water footprint per capita in Krueng Aceh watershed area was 674.52 m3/year. Water footprint for rural and urban population were 608.27 m3/year and 740.77 m3/year respectively. The WF of food consumption in urban area of Krueng Aceh watershed is 690.74 m3 / capita / year and 584.22 m3/capita/year or average 625.69 m3/capita/year, while for non-food, the WF per capita is 24.05 m3/year in rural or 32.46% of the total water footprint. Non-food consumption per capita in Krueng Aceh and in urban areas is 50.03 m3/year or 67.53%. The total water demand based on the water footprint is 378,906,655.05 m3 in 2015 which is consumed by most of residents in the Krueng Aceh watershed area. Furthermore, total WF in rural and urban area are 193,489,128.95 m3 and 185,417,526.10 m3 respectively.

Abstract

 The Baiturrahman Grand Mosque is well-known as the identity of Banda Aceh town, Indonesia. The extensive renovation was carried out in 2015 to the Mosque, presenting an open piazza coated with glossy white marble replacing the previous greeneries and grass. This change creates a much different thermal sensation of the prior environment. This condition also invites the contrast to respond and define spatial comfort, including thermal and visual comfort. Therefore, this study conducts an assessment of thermal and visual comfort at the open piazza, which was done through field measurements. The outdoor thermal comfort was calculated using the equations proposed by Sangkertadi that are appropriate for the tropics. The visual comfort was examined using the De Boer glare scale. The result shows the discomfort appearance for both thermal and visual comfort. The study gives recommendations, such as planting greeneries, providing more shades for achieving lower outdoor air temperature. Replacing the glossy marble with the diffusing and rough surface will reduce the glare for getting the more acceptable visual comfort against the marbles.
