Abstract

In this research concerns with derivational noun suffixes in the Dive Studios YouTube Channel entitled “How Did I Get Here?” episode 1. The method that used in this research descriptive quantitative method to identify the types and the progress of derivational noun suffixes that found in the data source. This research found 57 data in total that found in the data source. By using theory from Plag (2002) this theory claims there are twenty-two types of derivational noun suffixes there are -ness, -age, -al, -ship, -an, -ance, -ing, -ion, -ant, -ism, -ist, -cy/-ce, -ity, -ment, -dom, -ee, -eer, -(e)ry, -ess, -ful, -hood, -er. But in this research only found five suffixes out of twenty-two. And in this study were found five types of derivational noun suffixes: -ing, -ion, -ment, -ful, and -ist.

Abstract

The purpose of this research to find out and analyze the types and meaning of figurative language used in Traitor's song lyric. Descriptive qualitative method was used to conduct a clear description of the problem which is identified. The data were taken from Traitor's song lyric by Olivia Rodrigo. The theory proposed by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963:367) were used to classify the types of figurative language and the theory proposed by Leech (1981) to analyze the meaning of figurative language. The result of this research showed there are four types of figurative language used in Traitor's song lyric, there are simile, personification, hyperbole, and paradox. The researcher found simile are 1 data, personification is 1 data, metaphor is 1 data, and paradox is 1 data.

Abstract

The aims of this research is to analyze the types of politeness maxims produced by the characters in Tuning Red Movie. The data in this research focuses on the utterances obtained from the conversations between the characters. This research used qualitative descriptive method to analyze the types of politeness maxim. The stages of data collection started from downloading the movie from the internet and then watching it repeatedly to understand the contents of the film. Next, take notes on every utterance spoken by the characters that can be used as data to clarify the types of politeness maxims. The last, categorize these utterances into six types of politeness based on Leech (1983) theory. The results of this research indicate that there are six types of politeness maxims used in this movie. First type is tact maxim, second type is generosity maxim, third is Approbation maxim, fourth is modesty maxim, fifth is agreement maxim and last type is symphaty maxim. It can be concluded that the movie contains all types of politeness maxim with their respective purpose.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analysis the style of language used by all the characters in the film "It's Me Marsya". In the film there are dialogues played by all the characters, there are many styles of language, but here the research focuses only on formal and informal language styles. This study obtains the factors of differences in formal and informal language styles. Language style can be found in the choice of words and grammar used in real-world communication or when watching movies. It is very important for people to express their ideas, the people who use that language style depend on who they are talking to and in which position they are speaking. This film is based on a true story that a little girl experiences about her magical friend, who becomes her playmate. His friend has accompanied him since he was two years old in the form of a Dutch child spirit. This type of research is qualitative research. The data collection method used in this study is the method of watching movies repeatedly, making transcription dialogs between characters, comparing scripts and transcripts to confirm the data, classifying data into various types of language styles used by the characters. Research data taken from conversational dialogue, which is transcribed in a movie. Then the research classifies based on the dominant type of language style. After analysis the data, the writer found that there are formal (40%) and informal (60%) language styles. It can be concluded that the dominant style of language is informal.

Abstract

This research discuss flouting maxim found in He's All That movie. The purpose of this research is to determine the types of maxim that flouted by the whole characters in the movie. The data collecting was conducted by observation method. The technique for collecting data is by watching the movie for many times. Then, taking notes the utterances spoken by the characters, and categorized the scripts into types of flouting maxim. After that, the data were analyzed using the descriptive qualitative method. The researcher applied Grice’s theory to conduct this research. The findings showed that all the types of maxim were flouted by the characters in He's All That movie. The first is flouting maxim of quantity, second is flouting maxim of quality, third is flouting maxim of relevance, and fourth is flouting maxim of manner. Flouting maxim of quantity is the most often appears. The characters clearly give less or more information than is necessary in He’s All That movie. In addition, the characters give more information because they want to strengthen the information given to the interlocutor. Then, they want the interlocutor to understand the topic despite their lack of information.

Abstract

The aims of this study are to find out the suffixes forming nouns from verbs used in the novel The Art of Racing in the Rain and analyze the process of those nominal suffixes. The data were taken from the novel The Art Racing in The Rain by Garth Stein. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The study combined two theories, those are the theory proposed by Katamba (1994), which was used to find out and classify the types of nouns derived from verbs, and the theory from McCarthy (2002), which is used to find out how the process of suffixation is found in the novel. The observation method was applied in collecting the data with several techniques, such as; reading and note-taking. Formal and informal methods were used in presenting the finding of this study. This study found 241 data which divided into six (6) suffixes. Those were 10 data of suffix -ation (4,1%), 18 data of suffix -er (7,5%), 125 data of suffix -ing (51,9%), 58 data of suffix -ion (24,1%), 29 data of suffix -ment (12,0%), and 1 data of suffix -ee (0,4%). Moreover, in this study, all those data were obtained in the process of the class-changing meaning of the word.

Abstract

The tittle of this thesis is An Analysis Of Characterization Of Main Character In The UP 2009 Movie By Pete Dokter. This movie tell about a old man, the name is Carl Fredricksen who full fills his promise going to the paradise fall using a flying house with many ballons and Russel, in his journey Carl and Russel pass a lot obstacles and the finally arrive in Paradise Falls. For the analysis of the main characters obtained in the UP film, there are several characters such as impolite, wild, cruel, bad thoughts, smart care, angry caring, Brave. The data which had been collected were analyzed descriptively based on the theory Kenney (1966) and theory Wellek and Warren (1956). The main character was analyzed into four categories which is simple(flat) character, complex(round) character, dynamic character and static characterFrom the result analisys there are Three dimension, from the three dimensions, there is 1 Physiological Dimension data, 19 Psychological Dimension data, and 2 Sociological Dimension data. So, in conclusion the most prominent dimension of Mr. Fredricksen is Psychological Dimension which contains 19 data.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the kinds of figurative languages used in the chosen song lyrics of Little Mix album entitled "Get Weird" to examine the meanings of figurative languages in the song lyrics of Little Mix. Several song lyrics from Little Mix's album that were taken randomly are the database of this analysis. This study used a qualitative approach and formal and informal methods to describe the types of figurative language. The theory of Perrine (1970) was used to analyse the types of figurative languages, and the theory by Leech (1974) was used to describe the meaning of each type of figurative language. After the study has been finished, the researchers revealed that the chosen song lyrics of Little Mix's album consist of 10 lyrics that used figurative language. In additional to that, six types of figurative language ware found, namely Simile (10%), Personification (10%), Hyperbole (20%), Paradox (20%), Metaphor (30%), and Metonymy (10%).

Abstract

This study attempts to reveal the moral value based on the classification of Linda and Eyre (1993) in the movie Luca. This study aimed to find out the value of being of the supporting characters in the movie Luca. It utilized a descriptive qualitative method. This study used the theory of moral values proposed by Linda and Eyre (1993) in their book entitled Teaching Your Children Values. The findings showed there were three types of moral values found in the supporting characters in the movie Luca. They are honesty, peaceability, and courage. The moral value of honesty and peaceability dominantly appeared in this movie. It related to their inner sincere and self-control which contributes building the movie as a whole. These data mainly revealed through the process that each characters engaged, along with its related situation in the movie.

Abstract

This article discusses about simile figurative language in selected song lyrics of Passenger. The writer analysed five song’s lyrics of Passenger which is used as data source. The five song’s lyrics are and I Love Her, I Hate, The Wrong Direction, Things that Stop You Dreaming, Beautiful Birds. The data in this article analysed in a descriptive and qualitative way. The purpose of this article is to identify the language and meaning of the metaphorical similes found in the lyrics of selected passenger songs. The article used theory proposed by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963) and theory proposed by Leech (1981). The result of this article found fourteen similes in the songs’ lyrics which centred around connotative and affective meaning.
