Abstract

The study mainly focuses with the Theme Rheme and Thematic Progression Pattern observed in Boris Johnson's address as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. The study's goal is to examine the sort of Theme Rheme and Thematic Progression Patterns discovered in the speech text. To examine the data, the study employed a qualitative method with a descriptive design. The data is derived from Prime Minister Boris Johnson's speech text. The data was evaluated using Halliday's (1994,2004) theory to analyze the Theme and Rheme and Paltridge's (2006) theory to analyze the Thematic Progression Pattern. According to the study, Circumstantial Adjunct as Topical Theme is the most dominant in the Thematic Progression Patterns, it is found that Reiterated/Constant Theme Pattern is the most dominant in the Thematic Progression Pattern.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the types of figurative language and the meaning of figurative language found in the song lyrics of Taylor Swift's album "Fearless." There are two theories used in the study. The first is the theory of figurative language from Knickerbocker and Reninger (1974), and the second is the theory of meaning by Leech (1981) to analyze the meaning of figurative language. The method used in this study is a qualitative method. The researcher found four types of figurative language used in Taylor Swift's songs, such as simile, hyperbole, synecdoche, and allusion. The data was collected by reading the lyrics of Taylor Swift’s song. As a result of this analysis, the researcher found 4 types of figurative language found in song lyrics. They were: simile consists of 1 or (17%), metaphor consists of 1 or (17%), hyperbole consists of 3 or (50%), synecdoche consists of 1 or (17%), allusion consists of 1 or (17). The most dominant type of figurative language found in those songs is hyperbole, with a percentage of 50%. Two out meaning of seven types of meaning used in those lyrics in order to understand the figurative language in those lyrics; they were connotative meaning and conceptual meaning.

Abstract

This study focuses on analyzing the types of coordinating conjunction in compound sentences found in novel entitled “It Ends with Us” by Colleen Hoover. The aims of this study is to find out the types of coordinating conjunction in compound sentences. In this study, it used a descriptive qualitative method in describing the types of coordination in compound sentences based on the theory that proposed by Quirk and Greenbaum (1973). The total data found were 160 data (100%). In details, the percentage of the data syndetic coordination appears 134 data or 82%. The data consist of 71 data or 44% that used and as coordinator, 35 data or 21% that used but as coordinator, 15 data or 9% that used so as coordinator, and 13 data or 8% that used two coordinator of syndetic coordination. In addition, the percentage of the data asyndetic coordination appears 24 data or 16%. The data consist of 23 data or 15% that used coma (,) as coordinator, and 1 data or 1% that used semicolon (;) as coordinator. The rest is 2 data or 2% consist of both coordinator between syndetic and asyndetic coordination in compound sentence.

Abstract

This study intended to analyze figurative language found in the Coldplay song lyrics. The objectives of this research were to find out types of figurative language and their meanings in Coldplay song lyrics. There were two theories that used in this research such as the first theory proposed by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1974) entitled Interpreting Literature used to find out types of figurative language found in Coldplay song lyrics, and the second theory proposed by Leech (1981) entitled Semantics: The Study of Meaning used to find out the meaning of figurative language found in Coldplay song lyrics. The method used in collecting the data was observation method. The writer collected the data of song lyrics by browsing and downloading song lyrics from the internet, reading and understanding all the song lyrics and taking note and classifying the phrase and senteces that contain of figurative language. The writer analyzed the data descriptively by using qualitative method. After analyzing the sentences in the song lyrics, the writer found several finding of figurative language found in Coldplay song lyrics. There were five types of figurative language that found in song Coldplay song lyrics, they are: 2 of simile (16%) 2 of metaphor(16%) 1 of personification (8%) 2 of metonymy(16%), 4 of hyperbole(33%), and 1 of allusion(8%). All the figurative language has a connotation that implicitly conveys hidden message and values of life.

Abstract

This study concern with semiotic analysis and explains the meanings that are conveyed by verbal and non verbalsign found in Victoria Secret Product Advertisements. In analyzing this study the method that used was descriptive qualitative method to conduct a clear and well organized descriptions bout the problem. In regards of the analysis there are two theories and one supported theory applied in this research namely theory of Saussure (1983) in analyzing signifier and signified of the sign. The second theory is denotation and connotation meaning by Barthes (1986). And the last supported theory by Wierzbicka (1996) theory of colorterms. The verbal signs is to convey the information from the advertiser to the readers, meanwhile non verbalsigns used to make the advertisement look cool, attractive and impressive, but still contained the meaning that related to the product that offered in advertisements. The researcher found there are 22 data of verbal and non verbal signs Which also carried two types of meaning, those are denotation and connotation meaning Both of verbal and non verbal signs contained connotative and denotative meaning. Verbal sign consist of explanation of the product and non verbal sign consist of picture and color.

Abstract

In this study, the varieties of metaphorical language and their significance will be identified and analyzed in the lyrics of a few of Billie Eilish's songs. In this study, two theories were employed. The first is Leech's (1981) theory of meaning, which examines the meaning of figurative language, and the second is Knickerbocker and Reninger's (1974) theory of figurative language. This study employed a qualitative methodology. In this study, simile, metaphor, and hyperbole were discovered to be three types of figurative language employed in a few of Billie Eilish's songs. By listening to the song's lyrics, data was gathered. This research led to the discovery of six different forms of figurative language in song lyrics for the study. They consist of 2 items, or 33% similes, 3 items, or 50% metaphors, and 1 item, or 16% hyperbole. There were 13 items or 48% hyperbola, 4 items or 14% simile, 6 items or 22% metaphor, 2 items or 7% personification, and 1 item each of synecdoche and metonymy. Hyperbole, which accounts for 48% of all figures of speech in these songs, is the most prevalent variety. Two of the seven categories of meaning employed in the lyrics—connotative meaning and emotive meaning—are used to interpret the figurative language.

Abstract

The title of this research was an analysis of the grammatical cohesion used in the descriptive text written by the fourth semester students of Universitas Mahasaraswati Denpasar. The objectives of this research are to find out the types of grammatical cohesion and how are the used of grammatical cohesion in the descriptive text written by fourth semester students of Universitas Mahasaraswati Denpasar. To analyze the data, the researcher used the theory of cohesion proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1976). The method that the researcher use in this study was the qualitative and quantitative method. As a result, there are two types of grammatical cohesion found in the descriptive text written by fourth semester students, they are reference, and conjunction. There is no ellipsis and substitution type found in the descriptive text. The most dominant type in the text found was the conjunction. The used of conjunction are the additive conjunction with a total use of 47%, the adversative conjunction with a total use of 16%, the temporal conjunction with a total use of 6% and causal conjunction with a total use of 4%.

Abstract

Abstract This article focuses specifically on the character analysis in Raya and the Last Dragon movie, especially the main character, namely Raya. This research is aimed to finding out main character’s characterization. The theory of characterization that proposed by Warren and Wellek (1962) was applied in this study. The research data were collected from Raya and the Last Dragon movie by watching the main character’s dialogue and action. Qualitative descriptive method was also used in conducting this research. There were 3 aspects of characterization that found in this movie namely, Raya was psychologically portrayed as a clever, determined, and cautions person. On the other hand, she was also socially described as Heart land’s princess, Chief Benja’s daughter, and dragon gem’s guardian. Lastly, she was physiologically illustrated to have black hair with braided and ponytail, big and black eyes, black eyebrows, brown skin, flat nose, and small lips when she was a child. However, when she was growing adult, she was depicted to have average height, thick black eyebrows, and long wavy hair, slim and slightly muscular. Keywords: Character, Characterization, Movie Abstrak Artikel ini berfokus secara khusus pada analisis karakter dalam film Raya and the Last Dragon, khususnya karakter Utama, yaitu Raya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui penokohan karakter utama. Teori tentang penokohan yang diusulkan oleh Warren dan Wellek (1962) diaplikasikan pada penelitian ini. Data penelitian dikumpulkan dari film Raya and the Last Dragon dengan menonton dialog dan aksi karakter utama. Metode kualitatif deskriptif juga digunakan dalam melakukan penelitian ini. Adapun 3 aspek penokohan yang ditemukan dalam film ini diantaranya, Raya digambarkan secara psikologis sebagai seseorang yang cerdas, bertekad, dan berhati-hati. Di sisi lain, dia juga dideskripsikan secara social sebagai putri dari negeri Hati, anak kepala suku Benja, dan penjaga permata naga. Terakhir, dia diilustrasikan secara fisiologis memiliki rambut berwarna hitam yang dikepang dan diikat, mata yang besar dan berwarna hitam, alis tipis berwarna hitam, kulit coklat, hidung pesek, dan bibir tipis saat dia masih kecil. Namun, ketika beranjak dewasa, dia digambarkan memiliki tinggi rata-rata, alis tebal berwarna hitam, rambut panjang bergelombang, langsing, sedikit berotot. Kata kunci: Karakter, penokohan, Film

Abstract

This study aims at (1) finding out the types of taboo utterances found in American Gangster movie, and (2) analysing the function of taboo utterances found in American Gangster movie. The data of this study were taken from a movie entitled American Gangster. The genre of this movie is crime drama. This study used descriptive qualitative method, by describing the word or phrase of taboo words from the movie. The qualitative method is applied in order to give clear analysis on the data according to the theory proposed by Battistella (2005) and Wardhaugh (2006). The result of this study shows that all types and functions of taboo words were found. First, there are four types of taboo words are epithets, profanity, vulgarity, obscenity. Vulgarity is the most dominant type used by the characters in the movie. Second, there are four functions of taboo words, such as; to draw attention to oneself, to show contempt, to be provocative, to mock authority. The most function of taboo words found in the movie is to show contempt. It is employed by characters in the movie. To support the analysis were used some dictionaries of taboo words. The phenomenon that usually happens in our life which nowadays many people used taboo words in their daily communication and it is one of the most efficient ways to expressing feeling in any situation.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims explain the contextual meaning found in the lyrics of Michael Buble song lyrics used theory of Lyons (1981) and to explain the context of the situation support the analysis of meaning in the lyrics of Michael Buble song lyrics used theory of Halliday and Hasan (1985). To analyze the data the researcher used descriptive qualitative method. The result showed there are 4 contextual meaning found, these contextual meaning grouped in 2 or (50%) words , 1or (25%) phrase and 1 or (25%) clause. The e contextual meaning consist of informal language ,figurative language, which analyzed based on the context of the situation showed that the field or the topic of each song about love between young adults, Michael Buble and her story about love and her child. the tenor of the participant of each song has similarity using figurative language , idioms, informal language. The mode of each song is the same that all of them are written text but can be read if those song are sung.
