Abstract

The objective of this study focus on types of comparative figurative language in the poem Maya Angeluo and their meaning. In resolving the problem of the study. The study for analyzed used the theory from Kennedy (1983), with the book entitled Literature: An introduction to Fiction : Poetry and Drama, and the theory of meaning ussed from Leech (1981), with the book entitled semantics : The study of Meaning. this study was used to describe the meaning of the types figurative language found in Maya Angeluo poems. This study used the data source from Maya Angeluo poems. Documentation method was used to collect data. This study used qualitative descriptive method has beed used to describe the data to analyzed the data, whereeas formal and informal method has been used to present the finding. There was found 21 data of types figurative language from 12 in poem Maya Angleuo. The meaning of those 21 comparative figurative language was describe useing the theory of Leech (1981). There was found two types of meaning were found from the data. They were affective meaning and connotative meaning. Keywords: figurative language, types, meaning, maya angeluo

Abstract

Figurative language often used in literary works, especially poems. It beautifies the language used in the poems. This study discusses about one of figurative types, that is personification, with is meaning found in Victor Hugo Poems. Personification is found mostly in the poems. There are two theories used in the study. The first is the theory of figurative language from Knickerbocker and Reninger (1974), and the second is the theory of meaning by Leech (1974) to analyze the meaning of figurative language. The method used in this study is a qualitative method. The researcher found 6 data of personification. Meanwhile for the meaning that the data have are categorized as conceptual meaning and connotative meaning.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the types and reasons for Code-switching in the Youtube channel Ini Talkshow on the program Net TV. This study is concerned with the Codeswitching phenomenon involving the Indonesian-English language that was found in Cinta Laura's speech during channel on the program Net TV. The quantitative and qualitative methods were used in this study. Apple and Muysken's theory (1987:118) is referred to in the study of data to analyze the type of Code-switching, and Hoffman's theory (1991) is referred to analyze the reasons for code-switching. It is done formally and informally to show the product of the analysis. There are found intra-sentential 10 data, inter-sentential 2 data, and tag switching 1 data. The reason for Code-switching are found in talking about a particular topic 25%%, quoting somebody else 10%, showing empathy about something 20%, interjection (inserting sentence fillers or sentence connector) 10%, repetition used for clarification 10%, expressing group identity 10%, and intention of clarifying the speech content for the interlocutor 10%.

Abstract

Illocutionary act refers to an act of doing something. This study was focused on the types of illocutionary act that found in the movie entitled Spider-Man: No Way Home. This study applied descriptive qualitative method in conducting the research. The library research was also used to collect the research data. In analyzing the data, the theory that proposed by Searle (1976) was applied in identifying the types of illocutionary act in the movie. Based on the results of this study, there were 100 data of illocutionary act that can be divided into 34 (34%) data of assertive act, 18 (18%) data of directive act, 24 (24%) data of commissive act, 22 (22%) data of expressive act, and 2 (2%) data of declarative act. The most dominant illocutionary act that occurred in this movie was assertive act.

Abstract

This research focuses on Meilin 's feelings for self - expression and how Meilin respects her ancestors and parents. Meilin is the main character of the novel. It doesn't stop there; Mei is also an active child and excels in school. Mei is always obsessed with making her parents happy until she forgets her own happiness. She couldn't express herself the way she wanted to. However, after going through many events, Mei decided not to hold back anymore. Mei then tried to be more honest with herself, unfortunately it had some effect on her. This is the background of this research by describing the respect that is shown by Meilin towards parents and ancestors qualitatively. The method used in to conduct this study is by observing combined with note-taking techniques. The first step of this research is to watch this film and read the script, after that record every sentence that contains moral values and record how the main character describes these moral values. Moral value of respect was examined using the theory proposed by Linda and Eyre (1993) in their book Teaching Your Children Values. Based on the classification results, the study analyses conversations that contain moral values of respect. shown by the antagonist and protagonist characters in a dialogue

Abstract

This research aims to find out and analyze the types and functions of figurative language used in Turnover's songs in Peripheral Vision album. The researcher used the qualitative method to give a clear description of the problem which is identified. The data were taken from Turnover's song in Peripheral Vision album. The researcher used the theory proposed by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963) to classify the types of figurative language and the theory proposed by Perrine (1969) to analyze the function of figurative language. The result of this research showed there are 4 types of figurative language used in Peripheral Vision Album by Turnover. There are simile, hyperbole, irony, and metaphor.

Abstract

This research aimed at analyzing the code-switching used by the novelist, Erisca Febriani in her novel entitled Kisah Untuk Dinda in order to classify the types of code-switching in the form of sentence, dialogue, and narration. The method applied in this research was descriptive qualitative method. Data collection was executed by reading the novel, taking notes, and classifying the types of code-switching. The theory used in this study was proposed by Poplack as the main theory in determining the code-switching types. The result of the data analysis was presented formally and informally. In the novel, there were 135 data of code-switching divided into 3 types of code-switching, such as tag switching with 19 (14,08%) data, inter-sentential switching with 5 (3.70%) data and intra-sentential switching with 111 (82.22%) data. The most frequent type of code-switching found in the novel was intra-sentential switching, while inter-sentential switching is the least types of code switching.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify the many slang terms used in the movie. The approach employed in this study is the descriptive qualitative method with the observation method. To identify different categories of slang terms, the idea put forward by Allan & Burridge (2006) was applied. Both formal and informal techniques were used to communicate the data analysis. As a consequence, five categories of slang words namely fresh & creative, flippant, imitative, acronym, and clipping were discovered in The Kissing Booth 3 Movie. All of the slang terms have been categorized into their appropriate groups.

Abstract

Nowadays, code-switching has been widely used by the public in communicating on social media or directly. This study aims to analyze the types of code-switching from Indonesian to English and vice versa on Tasya Kamila Instagram Account. The descriptive qualitative method is used for this study to analyze the data. The data were analyzed using the theory from Poplack (1980). There are 3 types of code-switching based on theory from Poplack (1980) such as tag-switching, inter-sentential switching, and intra-sentential switching. The types of code-switching that use 5 data of tag-switching with percentage (8.62%), 28 data of intersentential switching with percentage (48,28%), and 25 data of intra-sentential switching with percentage (43,10%). Based on the results of research, Tasya Kamila is dominantly using intersentential switching in writing captions for each photo or video on her Instagram account.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to identify the types of maxims that were flouted in Spencer movie. The movie tells about Princess Diana’s depression with her husband having an affair that she finds out during Christmas celebration with the Royal Family. The data was collected from the Spencer movie’s script that analysed using the cooperative principle theory by Grice (1989). The method that was applied in this research is descriptive qualitative method which also presented in informal and formal way. The result of this study showed that the four types of flouting maxim were performed in Spencer movie. There are 25 data (60%) for flouting maxim of relevance, 7 (17%) data in flouting quantity maxim, 6 data (14%) for flouting manner maxim, and 4 data (9%) in flouting quality maxim. The reasons why the flouting maxim can occur in this movie are: Diana often changes the subject because she has to behave as a princess, she cannot express her feelings and she insisted on something that is against the rules because she wants to show everyone that she is feeling broken inside that make her flouting the maxim of relevance. Diana also loves to make sarcasm about the rules in the palace making her flouting maxim the manner that makes the servers hard to understand. The servers always make Diana annoyed by telling a long story about why she has to follow the rules that make them flout the maxim of quantity. Diana sometimes lies so she can hide her feeling that blatantly disobeying the maxim of quality.
